MAKING PLANS FOR MIKE VEMITY BENEFIT BOXING SHOW True Sportsman CoL Huston and Rupert have proven that, in their time owners of the Yanki. Huston' passing from game is blow to baseball. Whats a New Year's Date To Tom Walsh FOUR CHAMPIONS INVITED TO APPEAR IN BENEFIT SHOW TEAMS EVENLY MATCHED FOR OPENING TILT GAMES ARE SCHEDULED BETWEEN SCHOLASTIC TEAMS AND ALUMNI Zur Graham To Lead West High Alumni Clyde Evens Gets Central Grads Together Thomas In Charge At South 4 By DAMO.Y BIXVOX Claims His Volley Ball Team Is Best WITH all the talk of volley ball in different sections of the city. Coach Paul 6beeks ot Firestone rises to remark that Firestone has a volley ball team they will back against any team in the city. Sheeks also claims to hare the star volley ball player ot the city, in Roy Glick, boxer.

"He's a wizard at that game," Eheeks OL. T. L. HUSTON'S passing from baseball is to be regretted. CoL Huston is a lovable character, Jack Dempsey and Harry Greb Asked Johnny Kilbane and Jack Wolf To Be Here Over 40 Boxers In Line For Bouts Novel Stunts To Ee Arranged r.M WALSH is a nice jovial soul.

At least Canton promoters should say so. Wbea Phil Hinton offered Walsh a chance to put Christianno on in Akron New Years day, Tom was angling to put Johnny Griffiths on with Mickey Walker, welterweight champion, in Canton on the same day. "Of course, it that is lined up you could drop your show back a few days," Walsh told Hinton. We regret being unable to say here what Hlntoa told Walsh in answer. PORMER athletes of the local high school always look forward to the Christmas vacation as the time when they get to teach the present representatives of their alma maters a man of greart humanity, of sound common sense.

He has Imagination, a rare quality among baseball magnates. Will Fleischmann, furious baseball fan, once described Huston to this reporter as most com-' demned the gam will be played at Perkln's school. South's custom fs to have the captain of the proceeding year lead the alumni. "Big'Boy" Thomas waa the 1921-2 captain. He is attending W'aehingtbn and Jefferson college now, but baa wired Coach, Weltner that he will be back and get the-team out in time for the game.

Last year the South Akron school had one of the biggest turnouts ot the year, with such tormar stars aa "Chick" Whalen, Clarence Swigart, Verlin Jenkins, Dave Burgner and "Puss" Burgner out for the game. North has not announced plana for Its get-together of the alumni yet, but as the game Is an annual event at all schoola the Hilltopp'ere will probably arrange for such a gam also. By JACK GIBBONS IP present plans go through, champion box fighters will be as common in Akron the night of Dec 23, as flappers in a Sunday night dance hall. December 23 is'down in the boxing calendar as the date for the Mike Vemity boxing benefit show. It's the night when boxing 'fans, fighters, promoters and all others interested in the game will respond to the appeal) of "Do it for Mike." And, as we say, if present plans go through, there will be enough fighters around the Akron Armory that night to win a world war.

As for champions no other than South gets the jump on other scholastfle cage teams tonight. The Weltnerites open the local cage season among high school teams playing Wadsworth at Soutb's own court. Of the two teams, seems to have the advantage on the local crew far as condition and teamwork is concerned. Wadsworta has been practicing since early in November and is said to be going great guns If Coach Weltner is to be taken at his word this is not questioning his veracity, but coaches sometimes mean exactly the opposite of what they Bay South has pnly a fair quintet this year. "We haven't material like in last season's team," he declared Friday morning In predicting South would have a hard time winning tonight.

"I will say for this year's squad that it is working hard and con-scienclously to develop a winner, but it will have to Improve fast." Many fans thought that Weltner would shift Stanford, his only letter-man, to the center position this year. The South mentor doping his lineup otherwise, however. Stafford is being kept at forward where his great shooting ability Is hoped to keep South in the running. SIcCloskey, the lanky quarterback of this season's grid team, is getting the call as his running mate. Substitute forwards are Brodt and Herman.

Hess has played center on the first team all week and will iikely start at that position tonight. The guards will probably be Poland and Annakin or C'haboudy. Big Ten Managers Reconsider Action CHICAGO, Deo. 15. A meeting of faculty managers of Big Tea universities haa been called here for Saturday to reconsider' the action taken several weeks ago in regards to a recommendation that Big Ten athletes refrain from attending the national collegiate track and field meet at Chicago's field late next June.

Criticism of the action has been so great In all schools that It is extremely likely the ruling will be rescinded tomorrow. It la urged that geographical conditions make a national meet imperative, and the quality of the meet at Stagg field last year is urged as a good reason for supporting It in the future. blea are placed at the disposal of the matchmakers. West High To Make Swimming Major Sport West high is the second school to announce plans for a swimming team this winter. The Cowboys are to be awarded a in this field just as In the other three major sports at the school to put It on the calendar to stay.

Faculty Manager Hllblsh Is negotiating for meets with several other scholastic teams near Akron, notably with several of the Cleveland high schools which go in tor the aquatic sport. the distinguished Mr. Jack Dempsey has been asked to appear. Before arising false hopes in this matter, lets be frank with one an a few things about sports In general and basketball In particular. At this iseason of the year, before the cage season has gotten well under way, they always come back for a court game, the alumni picking their team from all the stars ot former years available to play the regular scholastic team.

At least three such games are scheduled for next week, and one more may be booked before this week is out. Central and West meet their predecessors next Wednesday and South tackles. the old-timers a week from tonight. "Zur" Graham, who is now attending Akron will captain the West alumni. He is making plana to get all the big time cagers of the last few years in his team, being aided by the fact that several of the leaders who are now attending other colleges will be home on vacation by this time.

Clyde Evans, ex-Centralite who helped Coach Shafer with the football team last fall, has been appointed to band together the downtowners alumni. He Is figuring on geeting "Ike" Spicer, "Red" Daum, "Gift" Zimmerman, "Rlba" Baysinger, and other members of the city championship combinations. Because Central's gymnasium has been con other and admit that It's highly doubtful if the world's champion will find It convenient to take part In the activities here. Nevertheless, Match THK matchmakers, however, have sot confined their efforts to boxing, in lining up talent for the show. A unique plan was created In.

Alumni To Play Varsity Quintet "Eddie" Went has volunteered to pick a team to represent the alumni ot Akron in a game with the varsity at CrouBe gymnasium next Thursday night. Wentz plana to line np aa many of the members of Akron's state championship teams ot several years ago as possible. Among the veterans who will play are "Red" Daum, "Swig" Swigart, Art and Bill Knowlton, "Pins" Boe-dicker and "Eddie" Thorpe. The association is backlof the idea, but Akron will aid In promoting it. ney felt It would be a terrible "faux paus" not to send the champion an' invitation, and rather than have Jack sore, he was invited to come on ex penses paid.

Po not confuse the term with "Sporting man." Toe many baseball magnates are "sporting men." They do not understand the letter pr spirit of sportsman, i The "sporting man" subordinates all other considerations of his par-iicular game for profit. The sportsman never loses sight of sportsmanship, which places profit of minor importance to the game. Huston, already a rich man, who had retired from active business life, Joined him in the enterprise for the same reason, love of the game. The story of the Ruppert-Huston combination is one of the real romances of sport. The men, diametrically opposite in many characteristics, In training, in environment, had never met until a week before they became partners.

The Yankees, a bedrabbled business prospect, run down at the heel, were for sale. Ruppert bad mention to 'Will Fleischmann in a casual conversation that he would not mind buying a baseball franchise if he could find a partner who would take the bother of running it off his hands. "I've got the man," said Fleischmann. He introduced Ruppert to Huston who was finding solace In his retirement from the contracting business In following the Giants from town to town as a rooter. IT was a strange combination.

Cynical baseball people felt sorry for this pair of rich Innocents and said they would be easy picking. Many rich men have been ruined In baseball.
