Then "The Mummy" grossed $420 million worldwide. So the pressure's greater this time. "The Mummy Returns," which opened Friday, had a budget of nearly $100 million, compared to $80 million for the 1999 original. ertumierie Yet Sommers said it's stiU just SOMMERS "a big commercial popcorn movie." "I don't expect to get nominated for anything," the 39-year-old said cheerfully. "I'm just hoping millions of people will see it." For Sommers, "it all came down to a script" that would bring back stars Brendan Eraser, Rachel Weisz and John Hannah. "Brendan knows he's going to get physically damaged," Sommers said of his leading man, "and Rachel would rather be on the stage." Singapore bans Jackson album SINGAPORE — Singapore has banned Janet Jackson's latest album, "All For You," because of lyrics deemed too steamy for the conservative Southeast Asian city-state. Government censors imposed the ban because the song "Would You Mind" has "sexually explicit lyrics," the Films and Publications Department said in a statement. The album's distributor, EMI, has filed an appeal against the ban, said EMI Singapore senior marketing executive Angelihe Teo. lArvcriKi Authorities also banned Jack- JA^KbUN son's previous album, "The Velvet Rope," because of its references to homosexuality and other issues considered touchy in the tightly controlled country Singapore has a long history of banning Western popular songs, dating to Peter, Paul and Mary's 1963 hit "Puff, the Magic Dragon." ' Thompson joins Headline News ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Andrea Thompson expected criticism when she accepted a position with CNN Headline News, but not the personal attacks she's received. The former "NYPD Blue" actress had no journalism experience when she switched careers'a year ago to become a reporter and fill-in anchor at KRQE-TV in Albuquerque. Next^week, she'll begin an anchor job that, many seasoned journalists would envy "I expected a certain amount of resistance. And I understand it, too," Thompson, 41, said in an interview Thursday night with KRQE. "There are some people who are very angry out there and they have my sympathies. "I've gotten some e-mails that say, 'If you had a shred of integrity, you would turn down the job at CNN.' How likely is that?" Mother shocked while reading daughter's diary Dear Ann Landers: My daughter just turned 16. "Becky" acts very innocent around me, but yesterday, I found her diary and was shocked to ^ learn that she has been sneaking out of the house at night and doing things with boys. She hasn't "gone all the way;" as we used to call it, but that will surely be the next step, and I fear it is not far off. How can I approach Becky without letting her know I read her diary? I don't want her to ruin her life by getting pregnant or worse. Please tell me how ^ to handle this, because at this moment, I don't have a clue, — Worried Mom in the Southwest Dear Southwest Mom: You're going to have to admit to Becky that you read her ANN LANDERS Creators Syndicate Inc. diary, and be prepared to accept her wrath for doing it. This will be far less painful than pretending you don't know what she is doing with boys and then learning she is pregnant. I can tell you that teen-agers who start to have sex do NOT stop simply because they have been discovered and reprimanded. What Becky needs at this point in her life is information. Please send her to a gynecologist who will inform her about how to protect herself from sexually transmitted diseases and what to do to avoid becoming pregnant. Also, Mom, try to open the channels of communication between you and your daughter, You can have a tremendous influence on Becky if she feels comfortable talking to you about her love life. And if you are helpful and nonjudgmental, she is more likely to pay attention when you discuss her behavior. Dear Ann Landers: You recently print ed a letter from a reader who was upset to see doctors smoking cigarettes on a television show. Your response was off the mark when you suggested the cigarettes were there because of product placement. Under the terms of the 1998 tobacco settlement agreement between members of the tobacco industry and the states, all of the major tobacco companies are forbidden to pay for product placement in movies, TV shows or other performances. Philip Morris USA does not seek, pay for or, for that matter, approve product placement of its cigarette brands in movies or on TV. In fact, we routinely decline any involvement when those in the entertainment industry solicit us for either product or permission. When a smoking'scene appears in a television program or a movie, it is because the director, writer or actor chooses to include that scene — not because tobacco companies are paying for product placement. — Ellen Merlo, Senior Vice Presi dent of Corporate Affairs, Philip Morris USA, New York Dear Ellen Merlo: You deserve to be heard, and in the interest of fair pla^ I am printing your letter. OK, I believe you when you say Philip Morris does not pay for product placement, but when you imply that the cigarette company disapproves of product placement, I say, "baloney." According to you, it is the actor or actress, director or writer who wishes to show the character smoking. That may be true. However, even if the tobacco companies have stopped paying for specific brand-name product placement, I'm sure you are pleased as punch to see smoking promoted in any way possible. It is good for business, and when you work for a tobacco company, you do whatever you can to promote the product. Write to Ann Landers at P.O. Box 11562, Chicago. IL 60611.
