8 v THE OTTAWA HERALD Wednesday, April 10, K63 This Little Girl Has Big Job By DEAN HAMILTON At the beginning of our current 4-H year, when election of officers was' held, we elected a club historian. This is a relatively new office. Some" of the clubs will continue .to elect; some will appoint their future historians, according to however the club wishes to do it. ' Each year our club works toward certain goals which, when fullfiUed, determines what color seal we get. At the close of the 4-H year our historian will send the list to the local extension office, and it will be forwarded on to the state office. The state office will report locally as to the credit we will get for our "alumni roll call." The state extension office is working on a possible point system on the basis of so many points for a certain number of names. The names and addresses of alumni are kept in a loose-leaf notebook or file for easy access and for adding on names each year by our historian. We have five members in our club who are taking Junior Leadership. Each has been given a list of names of the alumni of Rainbow to find out present addresses and what they are doing now, if there are any outstanding, achievements in their lives. .The purpose of the Kansas 4-H Alumni program 3-fold: ':'.'• 1. To assist the local county 4- H program through promotional activities and leadership. 2. To develop good will for 4-H. 3. To give financial support to the 4-H program through the 4- H Foundation. Keeping reocrds for the future is. t big job but an especially rewarding one, as some of our par- (.iliiteiwMiw^ijiA'^jfiriy;, 1 !, ii.'iM,f l .<•' ,:s°'vjiliifva.' .' ,,, .V'' 1 f^,,,,^,*,; <kfn i;i /'' , ,, 'i >!I; • i,, >'% *V - • :;'' », • • i •!,.. .•',!' •«p. fl ,'»,. j "!%,.,.. «J lUli'vK i\ ' . ,vr .>,.'>• • i!... , !•• l f Lawrence Has A New Mayor LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) - C. V. (Rusty) Springer was chosen by the city commissioner as the new mayor of Lawrence at a meeting Tuesday night. Springer will succeed Ben Barteldes as mayor. Barteldes did not seek reelection. As one of his first duties. Mayor Springer proclaimed the week of April 14-20 as K.U. Relays Week in Lawrence. Could Star InTlus Comedy NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. <AP)You might say that truck driver Salvatore M. Augliera was in a predicament Tuesday. His 14-foot, 9-inch trailer was too tall for the New England Thru-way .toll gates and he was turned back. But a bridge underpass he had cleared on the approach had only a 13-foot clearance over the return lanes. So Augliera, who wound up with a summons, bad to wait for police to jockey traffic for him to use Man Killed Near Waverly WAVERLY, Kan., (AP)-Robert Powell 38, of Kansas City, father of six, was killed Tuesday in a one-car accident on Kansas 50 near Waverly. The Highway Patrol said Powell's car went off the shoulder of the highway, swerved back across the road and overturned. A construction worker, Powell was on his way to work at Olpe, Kan. TWO NEW 4-H MEMBERS - Amy Haynes, 9, (left) and her sister Starla, 10, are two of Rainbow 4-H Club's newest members. Girls are daughters of Mr. and Mrs. Gene Haynes, Princeton. Both attend Princeton School and are looking forward to their 4-H careers. (Herald Photo). ents can attest after hearing at a recent parent's night, about the Capper Poultry Clubs and seeing the mementoes that had been kept over the years. «• Rainbow has had the longest continuous club in the county since 1929, so it is quite a job to keep track of all of our alumni who are scattered about in different parts of the country. Some are teachers, school principals, farmers, nurses and housewives. Many of their children are and have been members of Rainbow. I'd like to introduce our historian, Kathy Brockus, only 11 year old. She's tiny, but willing. This is her first year in 4-H, and her project is the first phase of cooking. She is the youngest of her family has two married sisters and a brother and she is an aunt. She, her brother, Eldon,, and her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Merle Brockus, live on a farm southeast of Princeton. Kathy is soloist in the chorus t the Princeton Grade School, nd attends the Richmond Metho- ist Church. Her interests and lobbies are varied, but her favorite, of course, is music.
