THE OTTAWA HERALD April 8, 1968 Heloise Erase Grease Spot With Talc Or Soda Helois* By HELOISE CRUSE Heloise: Here is the way I remove grease uipots from wall paper. Natural- j ly, the sooner you work with it 4*the better. > Just take a clean powder puff 1 and sprinkle the puff with white •talcum powder and then rub the I .powder puff over the spot, repeat- fj'edly. Repeat this process until 'jthe grease disapears. 5 When the puff gets greasy, turn it over and T use the other ' side. Be sure to keep dipping the •• puff in the talcum so it works — into the grease. Let set awhile and wipe off with a c 1 e a n puff. Using a powder puff is a wonderful idea! However. . . I won- j der why nobody has written in to i use soda instead of talcum pow- j der? After having these two pro- J ducts tested by chemists they ad« vise me the soda is much better than talcum for absorbing grease on clothing. Not only does it absorb more, but it is easier to remove. Heloise Dear Heloise: , I want to tell you how useful your nylon net is for taking lint from dark fabrics and also suede shoes. Just try it for that. I was amazed. J. Fallor Dear Gals: This is plain, old, ordinary net which you buy at your dime and department store for about thirty 1 nine cents a yard and comes 72 nches wide. Cut it up into 18 by 18 inch sizes to use for dish rags etc. Heloise Dear Heloise: To prolong the life of brass waste baskets cut a piece of foil or wax paper the shape of the bottom of the basket and tape it to the inside of the bottom! Replace this as often as is needed. A Reader Dear Heloise: The heavy syrup in canned fruit and sweet potatoes may be used with soft drinks for a delicious cold drink or place in ice trays to freeze into sweet ice cubes or. . . or in jello to add a special taste. Mrs D.E.B. Dear Heloise: Just how does one clean a portable electric oven? My oven looks awful. Portable oven Has anyone the answer to this? I don't happen to have a portable oven myself but when you send in your hint I will try a few of them and find the best way. Drop your answer to Heloise care of this paper. Letters do not have to be signed to be printed. But why not let us give you credit for your idea. Sure woulc be appreciated. Heloise Dear Heloise: I just found that my dishwasher was just great for sterilizing infant's small plastic toys. It puts a great shine on all of my glass nick nacks and whoever said it was only for dishes anyway? Jan Kirby Take care not to use the dry cycle for the plastic toys! Might melt 'em! Heloise Dear Heloise: When my salt becomes damp n my shaker I add a few navy Deans or some rice and it absorbs the moisture. Edna Dear Heloise: Here is a hint I want to share with your readers. I had several large dinner cloths of very fine linen which were handed down from my mother and grandmother. In this day of buffet serving I felt, "why should these cloths just be set aside . . .and never used?" I measured one and found so much yardage that I made six beautiful pillow cases from it. They are soft and beautiful as well as long wearing. Helen Shackelford And what a luxury to sleep on fine linen Heloise Dear Heloise: For those who do not have washing machines and must go to washaterias to do their laundry . . . Take several plastic dry cleaning bags with you to the lau- dromat. I can throw the damp clothes in these- bags and lay them on the car seat or floor and it does not leave water splotches such as when I put it in my laundry hamper or a cloth bag. Nellie N. By CECILY BROWNSTONE Associated Press Food Editor DARLING OF sorority and guest houses, Perfection Salad arrived on the scene over a quarter of a century ago. It's been going strong ever since. How the salad got its name is anyone's guess, though it has been treated to other titles through the years. Originally this salad was made with unflavored gelatin, and sometimes it still is. But short- order cooks eventually began using lemon-flavored gelatin as the base and this formula became popular. Now here's another change. We've used the new lemon-lime flavored gelatin in the dish. The other ingredients in Perfection Salad have always been much the same —. cabbage, eel ery and pimiento-stuffed olives or pimiento — although amounts have varied. The following version is a pretty pale green with slices of pimiento - stuffed olives showing up well. If you have a 3-cup ring mold you'll find the salad looks extremely pretty turned out of it; if not, use another shape or individual molds. Serve this jel- lied concoction on salad greens with a main course of meat or fish; it's fine, too, instead of cole slaw with baked beans. You can, of'.course, offer mayonnaise with A 1933 recipe for Perfection Salad ends with this note: "A man's salad." Why it was considered particularly appealing to masculine tastes is beyond us! NEW PERFECTION SALAD 1 pkg. (3 ounces) lemon- lime flavored gelatin % teaspoon salt 81 cup boiling water 2 tablespoons lemon juice % cup cold water 1 cup fine knife-shredded green cabbage (lightly packed) % cup finely diced celery 12 pimiento-stuffed' green olives (thinly sliced) Salad greens . Mayonnaise if desired Stir together the gelatin, sail and boiling water unil gelatin dissolves. Stir in lemon juice and cold water. Chill until slightly thickened. Fold in cabbage, celery and olives; turn into a 3-cup ring or other mold, or into 6 individual molds. Chill until set Unmold and garnish with salac greens; pass mayonnaise if used Make 6 servings. PERFECTION SALAD - A jellied mold featuring green cabbage, celery and pimiento-stuffed olives adds a piquant note to cold cuts of a hot meat or fish dish. •: Socialettes Credit Women's Breakfast Club business session was conducted by Mrs. Hallie Reddick at the breakfast meeting in Lee's cafe.
