Beauty regimen full of costly cosmetics that require too much time for application By LISA JENNINGS Scripps Howard News Service •EMPHIS, Tenn. — If it seems like you were absent when the secret .to perfect makeup was divulged, 'you're not alone. Using those mascara ; Wands, lipsticks and blush brushes can •take some training. I went to a local salon : 'for a makeover and came back with " mixed feelings. The first question was: "What was I -looking for?" It was a hard one to answer. '"II was getting a makeover at Zoe, Mem" plus's own very hip source of "beauty-insider exotica," according to Elle magazine. .. The tiny shop is where beautiful people ;': 'go to get beautiful cosmetics and scents. I n -wanted a new look. The only "look" I had was the one that involves no makeup at > SEW SIMPLE all and whatever God, with his peculiar sense of humor, gave me. I wanted to look professional. Apparently, the fact that I am a professional wasn't enough. Nearing 35, it seemed I should learn how to do more than wear mascara and a bit of lipstick on special occasions. Unlike getting a makeover at a department store where makeup artists push one particular line, Zoe carries three makeup lines, including two of the hottest: Trish McEvoy and Stila. This fall Zoe introduced Zoeface, the store's own line of cosmetics and tools. The makeover is $50 redeemable in products. That means it's free if you buy $50 worth when it's over. My makeup artist, Jane Evans, was just back from Atlanta, where she was trained to use the new fall products. Colors this fall, said McCoy, are very "plummy." Our goal: a "natural look" that implied I didn't wear makeup. We decided that Evans would show me how to do daytime makeup, then adjust it for night. First, she asked about my skin care program. I told her I used whatever soap I have a coupon for to wash my face, and followed that up with a dab of Oil of Olay. I had the feeling she considered that no better than rubbing my face in gravel. She suggested a cleanser and lotion which together cost $70. That would be followed by Mario Badescu's Suncare moisturizer with sunblock ($28.50), along with Hyaluronic Eye Cream ($30) which "binds 1,000 times its weight" to keep moisture in your skin. At night I was to use Badescu's Seaweed Night Cream ($32), applied just right or it would make my eyes puffy. After a face wash with the glycolic acid team, my skin felt remarkably smooth. It was a miracle. I felt my credit card tingle. But that was only the beginning. Evans first applied a Protective Shield Concealer Base ($21) on my eyelids up to my brow, which needed to be sealed with a special brush ($42). Tools, said McCoy, are crucial in professional makeup application. Special brushes made from sable or blue squirrel were involved in applying my eyeshadow. Then came my favorite: the $15 push- and-wiggle brush, which was used to literally push-and-wiggle a touch of eyeliner right into my lash line. I felt I was clued in on a great beauty secret. The parade of cosmetics continued over two hours (because I asked so many questions): lash builder, mascara, foundation, loose powder for a "flawless finish" — all, of course, involving very special brushes. The apples of my cheeks were poked with blush. My lips were lined and painted for a "pouty" look. When I was done, my "neutral" day look was pouty, flawlessly finished, and yet, still natural, just as promised. So how much would it cost to look like this every day, I asked? $549.50. I nearly smudged my lipstick when my jaw fell to the floor. Granted, most of that investment is in the special brilshes that would last for years. But the skin-care treatment and cosmetics were roughly;a three-month supply. . I balked. Reluctantly, Evans pared down to bare essentials, but it was still out of my price range. I realized that, in this world, there are women who spend a lot of time and money grooming to look beautiful. But th6y all want to give the impression that all they've done is smear on a bit of lipstick. And there are women like me who can't be bothered to do anything beyond smearing on a bit of lipstick. ! No way was I going to spend that mucih time in the morning sorting out my push- and-wiggle brush from my windshield- wiper brush while my 10-month old tugged on my skirt for attention. Maybe someday I would have the money and time to wear makeup that made me look like I wasn't wearing any makeup. But for now, the truly natural look would just have to do. Psychologically, getting dressed up and looking great is just like going on a vacation. It's an uplift! First, let's look in our closets to see what we can embellish. With so little time left for ourselves, we career women must find easy ways to expand our wardrobe. A touch of extravagant fabric is one answer. The vest is the perfect place to start; it's easy to make and works with skirts and pants. Try brocades, velvets or tapestries. Or add a shell or camisole to your daytime suit for instant glamour. Make yours in a wonderful color, whether lace or a silky print. A simple jacket such as Vogue 2355 by Anne Klein is easy to make, has raglan sleeves and can be left unbuttoned. If you make yours from brocade or tapestry, it will need little inner construction. Another choice is Butterick 4012, which has several versions. The big news today is "at-home" dressing. More people are entertaining at home, combining comfort with glamour. At-home dressing doesn't necessitate a trip to the dry cleaners after each wearing. There are unlimited selections of silky polyesters, velvets, satins and crepes that don't require special care. Look for the new mi- crofibers as well. Make it fun, yet practical. Make pants with a shirt jacket, pairing it with a shell blouse. The shirt jacket is simply a shirt worn loose, and it could be made of<a sheer chiffon or lame. Again, be sure it is washable. How many of us are guilty pf dressing up to go out but never for those who are nearest and dearest to us — our families? Begin wearing your holiday magic this fall; don't wait until mid-December. .
