THE AKRON BEACON AND REPUBLICAN, THURSDAY EVENING APRIL 23, 189C. A THIRD FROST. CHIEF OF POLICE. 0 llXijiTQ R0l Indispensable 1 In Diphtheria Eovinine, aa has been attested by thousands of physicians. One of the many testimonials we have received is onexrom Dr.

Arthur P. Ginn of Omaha, which reads, I used Boviuine in several cases of diphtheria, and was successful with the cases. This to me is sufficient evidence of its value, no other food being used during treatment, except the milk used as vehicle for its administration." Scott's -Emulsion BBataaaaawaaBBBaaavaaaaaBBaBBaaBaBaBsi stands for wasting, decreased vitality, impoverished blood. The combination of Cod-liver Oil with the Hy-pophosphites of lime and soda as prepared in it, is exactly what is needed for the above conditions. TU.E GARBAGE QUE3TIOX.

The New Century Clnb Discusser It-Cremation tiie Plan Favored. "The-Carlyles and their friends" was the title of Miss Agnes Kuleman's paper read before the New Century club on. afternoon. writer gave the story of Thomas Car-lyle's early life and education, touched lightly upon his domestic infelicities, and' expressed great admiration for his literary qualities and pure and noble life. Mrs.

Claypole followed with a description of the Carlyle home in London a3 visited by her last summer. A discussion upon the subject "What shall we do with our garbage1' was opened by Miss Adelaide Brouse who enumerated the various methods of diiposing of refuse, described their workings, and reeommended cremation as the most satisfactory plan. Mrs. Murdoch described the sewar-age system of our city, stating its cost and what it accomplishes. Mrs.

T. L. Johnson, of Cleveland, who has given the subject considerable study, explained the workings of an experimental crematory in operation in her city, and other ladies gave opinions and suggestions. Tha members of the New Century club wish it stated that the poem with which Delphine Humphrey responded to the toast, Absent Husbands," at the resent club ban-onet was her own composition and that the statement- making P. There was another frost last night, much more severe than that of Tuesday night. There are no appearances of damage to vegetation, however, this morning. Grape vines at present are not far enough advanced to sustain injury, excepting in the case of such frosts as that of last May, when most of the vines were killed down to the ground. Gooseberry and currant bushes in like manner are hardy enough to bear such frosts as that of last night as well as many other things that are pushing forward in the garden at this time of the year.

A gentleman who devotes considerable time to his garden told a Bbacom Axn Republican reporter this morning that he was looking for another frost to-n'ght, if the weather kept tine, more se.ere than those of last night and Tuesday night. Said he: "I have noticed that we almost invariably have three frosts, each succeeding one being more severe. I believe the lender plants and shoots become hardened to some extent, and are as well able to stand the third frost as the first one, provided, or course it is not too severe." The subject is one of general interest ju3t now, alike to those of the city as well as our farmer friends of the country. PARK CONCERTS. The Goodrich.

Band Hits Arranged to Give Them During June, July and The various bands in the city have been asked "by the park commissioners to play in the parks during the summer, as was done by the Eighth Regiment and Goodrich band two years The bands two years ago received $30 each and also a sum from advertising in the programmes. The Second Presentation. A large audience attended the eoc ond presentation of the cantata given by the three lower grades of the San day school in the First Methodist Episcopal church last evoning. The decorations of plants and flags wen very pretty and the children took th ir i-arts even better than i tne occasion of the first performance the preceding evening. The Brownie were very conical and indeed the entire enter tainment was ons which highly pleased all who et tended. Much credit is due Richard Griffith and Mrs.

Change "Wbicli is Being Talked Of The New Office May be Created Next Year. DuriDg the year 1892 a bill was passed which made it optional on the part of the.cities of Akron and Youngs-town as to whether they had a marshal at the head of the police -force or a chief of police. Youngstown immediately abolished the office of marshal and created one of chief of police an the change has been very successful. A city official said this morning that this plan is now being talked of for Akron and should the change be made the city will be a gainer by some hundreds of dollars every year. The salary of the chief of police can not be greater than 1,500 while during the past 12 years the least thatthe marshal has drawn ha3 been $2,003, and the greatest $3,300 per year.

It would also take the office out ot politics for it is appointive, the appointing power being delegated to the board of city commissioners or if necessary to the mayor. It wonld do away with the serving of notices, which in the summer takes a great deal ol the marshal's time, by tha head of the force. If the change is made it will not affect the present marshal but would go into effect at the expiration of his term in April, 1897. I Damage Done. A person passing by Dr.

E. Hitchcock's residence on East Exchange street late yesterday saw smoke issuing fram the roof. Ha notified the occupants within and an alarm was turned in from box 25, to which companies 1 nnd 4 responded. The lire was located under the roof and was easily extinguished. The cause of the fire is unknown but it i3 believe'1, to be due to a spontaneous combustion.

The loss was small. The Win. The Elk bowling club defeated the Goodrich ciub last evening at Berro-din's alley by a aora of 1,229 to 1,165, winning by 64 pins. Half Hatm via. A.
