Secretary-General Kofi Annan is this year's recipient of the Philadelphia Liberty Medal. Annan is expected to accept the medal and its accompanying $100,000 at Independence Hall in Philadelphia during the city's Fourth of July celebration, officials said. AMMAM The Liberty Medal was estab- ANNAN lished in 1988 to honor individuals or organizations whose actions represent the founding principles of the United States. Past recipients include former President Jimmy Carter and U.S. Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall. Albriglit: Women's power on rise . RENO, Nev. — Former U.S. Secretary of State Madeleine Albright said new recognition of women's rights around the world will be one of the most powerful forces shaping the 21st century Although women continue to suffer human rights violations and remain undervalued in many parts of the world, enormous progress has been made around the globe in recent decades, she said. Albright gave the keynote address at the Nevada Women's Fund's annual awards luncheon on Wednesday. The former secretary of state said her visit to China five years ago persuaded her to ti'y to "bring efforts to lift the lives of women and girls into the mainstream of American foreign policy." Julio loves again and again MIAMI BEACH, Pla. — To all the girls Julio Iglesias has loved before, add two. The 57-year-old Latin singer's longtime girlfriend, Miranda Rijnsburger, gave birth Tuesday at Mount Sinai Medical Center to twin daughters. All are doing well, Iglesias' spokeswoman said. Iglesias and Rijnsburger have two sons, ages 2 and 3. He also is the father of three adult children from his first-marriage — a daughter Isabel, v/ho is a Spanish-language'television personality, and sons Enrique and Julio Jr., both singers. Terr! Clark charged with DUI NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Country singer Terri Clark was charged with drunken driving after a police officer stopped her for speeding. Clark, who was stopped Tuesday night, was released on $2,000 bond. "The officer detected several cues usually identified with an alcohol-impaired driver," police spokesman Don Aaron said. CLARK Clark, 32, had glassy eyes, was very talkative and had a hard time keeping her balance when she was asked to stand outside her car, Aaron said. Gambler needs help; if he doesn't get it, throw him out Dear Ann Landers: Please tell the lady who is "In Love With a Gambler" to RUN and not look back. I was married to a gambler for too many years. There is no way to describe the hell her life will be if she marries the man. He will do anything to, gamble — lie, cheat and steal. He wiU mortgage the house and max out credit cards she didn't know existed. There will be post-office boxes in his name and maybe some aliases. Gambling wiU be his first mistress, the most important thing in his life. Like an alcoholic who will do anything for a drink, he will do anything to shoot dice, play cards or bet on horses. My experience with addictions has taught me that if there is one addiction, there are at least three others. My ex's ANN LANDERS Creators Syndicate Inc. Other habits were porn, drinking and other women. He hid them well. And gamblers can be mean when they are losing. Remember, there is a nasty characteristic called greed behind gambling — wanting something for nothing. I beg her to dump that creep and look for a kind, decent man who deserves her love. — Older and Wiser in Seattle Dear Older and Wiser: Gambling, like alcoholism, is a disease. For more than 30 years, I've been telling my readers who suffer with this affliction to join Gamblers Anonymous. It's as close as your phone book. Many who took my advice wrote later to say that G.A. was their salvation. Since you are a person who has been there, your words carry a lot of weight. I hope, however, that "In Love With a Gambler" will first try to help her boyfriend with his addiction by joining Gam-Anon, for spouses and friends of gamblers. If that fails, she should unload the guy and call it a day Dear Ann Landers: My wife and I have a beautiful baby boy We have a great marriage and love our son dearly. When my wife was in labor, things did not go well, and I almost lost her and the baby The problem is that my wife is talking about having another child, and the doctors have told her she must have a Cesarean. They said it will make the delivery less risky However, I am terrified that she will die. She says I am being ridiculous and that she cannot imagine her life without another child. , I want my wife to be happy, but more important, I want her to be healthy How can I convince her this is too dangerous? — Devoted Husband in California Dear Devoted Husband: The person who should have the final word is your wife's obstetrician. Apparently, she trusts him (or her), and you should, too. Talk with the doctor and get the reassurance you need. You sound like a loving, caring husband, and your wife is one lucky lady Dear Ann Landers: Please tell physical education teachers in schools that they should select the team members and not allow the team captains to do it. This practice is humiliating, and those who are not athletic are always picked last. This happened to my daughter, who "is a fine student but not athletic. She came home in tears, saying, "I was picked last. It was so embarrassing." These "last-picked" kids need help. Be there for them, Ann. — Newton, N.J. Dear N.J.: My twin and 1 were also good students, but we were major klutzes in gym and always got "picked last." I agree, the selection process is painful and should be abolished. Gym teachers should be more sensitive to this situation. They would not only be helping these kids feel better, they also would be teaching the other children a lesson in compassion.
