The market was also wary about the government's employment report due to be out today "There are renewed fears about weakness in the economy We believe the economy is bottoming, but we are not there yet," said Alan Skrainka, chief market strategist at Edward Jones of St. Louis. But Wall Street's resurgent optimism, along with the prospect of even lower interest rates, helped blue chips curb their losses just before the close. The Dow Jones industrial average closed down 80.03 at 10,796.65 after being off more than 148 points earlier in the session. The blue chip index closed just above its break-even point for the year, 10,786.85, but still sacrificed gains this week that had brought the Dow to its highest close since February The Nasdaq composite index fell 74.40 to 2,146.20 to end its four-day winning streak. However, the loss accounted for less than half the 185.72 that the tech-dominated index had picked up since last Friday. The Standard & Poor's 500 index, the market's broadest measure, slipped 18.85 to finish Thursday at 1,248.58. Investors were trading cautiously ahead of the employment report for April, Skrain ka said. Unemployment is expected to remain at 4.3 percent, where it stood in March. The market was troubled by other labor data Thursday. The Labor Department reported that first-time claims for state unemployment benefits rose last week to a five-year high, a sign that employers' need for workers continues to wane. Losses widespread The market's losses were widespread, in keeping with the fact that most businesses have been hurt by the weakened economy and that many have been forced to lay off workers and slash prices. General Motors fell 52 cents to $56.08, while Coca-Cola dropped 82 cents to $46.75. Both are Dow stocks. BRIEFLY Tech shares also pulled down the market's indexes. IBM fell $1.70 to $113.70, while Intel stumbled $1.52 to $30.40. Both are Dow components, as well. Computer makers suffered as analysts predicted demand would not pick up soon. Dell Computer, which was downgraded by UBS Warburg, fell $1.80 to $24.93. Recovery? What recovery? Analysts said investors chose to cash in some profits they reaped in April after hearing companies say the second quarter — rather than the first — will be the weakest of the year. "Everyone has been talking about a recovery being around the corner But now we may have another disappointing earnings season for the second quarter, as well," Skrainka said. The potential for more bad earnings news weighed on certain stocks, including Newell Rubbermaid and Papa John's. Papa John's dropped $1.80 to $27.52 after warning Wednesday that higher cheese prices will crimp second-quarter and yearly profits. That dim outlook overshadowed the pizza delivery company's first-quarter earnings, which were 3 cents per share higher than expectations. Dell notebook batteries recalled DALLAS — Dell Computer Corp. is recalling about 284,000 batteries used in its notebook computers because they can overheat and catch fire. Dell and the Consumer Product Safety Commission said Thursday the company had heard one report of a battery that caught fire, causing minor damage. The recall covers batteries used in Inspiron 5000 and 5000e notebooks shipped to customers from Jan. 7, 2000, to March 21 of this year. Dell and its service providers also sold the batteries separately during the same time for $100 to $130. The batteries were made in Japan by Panasonic, Dell spokesman Tom Kehoe said. Panasonic spokesman Kurt Praschak said the batteries were made by Matsushita Battery Industrial Co. and don't carry the Panasonic name. Lucent scientists arrested for theft NEWARK, N.J. — Two Lucent Technologies scientists and another man — all Chinese-born — were arrested by the FBI Thursday and accused of stealing Lucent softv/are and sharing it with a company largely run by the Chinese government. U.S. Attorney Robert Cleary said there are no allegations that the Chinese company, Datang Telecom Technology Co. of Beijing, was aware of the theft. The stolen software was for Lucent's now-discontinued PathStar system, which enables Internet service providers to offer low-cost voice and data services. Path Star had more than 90 percent of the market and generated $100 million for Lucent last year, according to court papers. "In the information age, it is difficult to imagine anything more dangerous to a company's business interests," Cleary said. Arrested were Yong-Qing Cheng, 37, who runs an optical networking business, and Lucent employees Hai Lin, 30, and Kai Xu, 33. SEC subpoenas Raytheon documents LEXINGTON, Mass. — Raytheon Co. said Thursday MARKETS the Securities and Exchange Commission has subpoenaed documents related to the engineering and construction business it sold to Washington Group International last year. The subpoena comes after months of fighting between the two companies over a final purchase price. WGI, which has said the controversy may force it into bankruptcy, maintains the Lexington-based defense contractor withheld financial information about the division. •WGI paid $50 million for the divisiopi last year.and- assumed, by Raytheon's calculations, $450 million in liabilities. WGI maintains the liabilities were as high as $700 million. "We will respond to the SEC's questions and supply whatever information is requested," said Raytheon chairman and chief executive Daniel P. Burnham. "We have made extensive disclosures regarding Raytheon Engineers & Constructors and its disposition to WGI and believe that our policies and practices are in compliance with all regulations and laws."
