Mean Green Hosts West Texas Eagles Begin Conference Play Against Buffs UPlTelephoto King Rules Court Billie Jean King holds up her trophy after defeating 55- year-old hustler Bobby Riggs in the Astrodome Thursday night. Mrs. King, who is top seed in the Virginia Slims tournament, won the match in straight sets and collected $100,000. By MACK OWENS Sports Editor THE TEXAS DIVISION championship of the Missouri Valley Conference will be at stake at Dcnton's Fouts Field Saturday night when North Texas State's Mean Green play hosts to the West Texas State Buffaloes. Kickoff time will be 7:30 p.m.

It will be North Texas State's first official appearance at Fouts Field since the 1972 homecoming game and also the first VC contest on the '73 slate. NT dropped a 31-7 opener to UTA Sept. 8 and bowed to Memphis State, 24-3, last weekend but a number of the younger Mean Greens stormed their way to maturity in the third quarter of the MSU contest. West Texas State opened with a 13-10 conference win over Drake, but the Buffs of Gene Mayfield ran into a buzz saw last Saturday when Tulsa blasted out a 48-3 win over WTSU. COACH I I A FRY has said "you just don't expect a Gene Mayfield -coached team to lose like that we don't know what to expect from them, but you figure they'll change some things defensively and they could go back to the wishbone About his own club last week, Fry said "we got stronger as the game went on and we just may be able to out-condition some folks the fourth quarter." North Texas stuck to its three-scrimmages-a-week routine, risking more injuries but coaches view the tough work as excellent learning' experience for the freshmen.

Against West Texas Saturday night, freshmen will all but dominate the "skilled" positions on the offensive unit for the Eagles. Quarterback Greg Van Ness will start in front of the hobbled senior. Phil Shotland. Reggie Turner will be the tailback, Zach Fry is the fullback, Vance Jackson will be back at split end and Mike Wilkerson, who filled in great at tight end for the injured Frank Davis at Memphis last week will start there Saturday. Denton Record-Chronicle PORTS Section FRIDAY AFTERNOON, SEPTEMBER 21.

1973 Davis, meanwhile, will be forced to miss the Buff game along with defensive end Rex Humbarger The latter has already undergone surgery following a knee injury in the MSU contest. Joe Bishop, Courtney Anderson and Sammv Swiere are still side-lining it. WEST TEXAS STATE also has some folks hurt, including two of the Buffs' best known tailbacks, Billy Pritchett and Cole Fraley. Pritchett went out of the Tulsa game with a knee injury after the third play and Coley is recovering from NT Third At OC Special to the Record-Chronicle OKLAHOMA CITY John Granger was two strokes off a torrid 66-shot pace, and Doug Higgins finished three back to pace North Texas State as the Eagles ended the first round of the All-College golf tournament at City University in third place Thursday. Lee Mikles of Arizaona State led the individual scoring, but LSU had three golfers among the top 10 and a 275 team total to take a commanding lead over second- place Oklahoma at 280.

NT posted a 282. OSU had 284 and Arizona State rounded out the top five at 285. Toughen Yet' The ears Broncos Face Bearcats Catch bruises. Rick Schleider will open at tailback for the Buffs Saturday night. Wingback Mickey Matthews, who also hurt a knee last week, has definitely been counted out of action against the Mean Green.

But, there's nothing tfrocg with West Texas State's celebrated defensive star, end Walter Hibbler. North Texas State award winners for the sterling effort in the last half against Memphis State included tackle Garrett who won the Mean Green Award for the second straight week; out-standing offensive back, Zach Fry 35 yards on 10 carries and a top blocking job at fullback- outstanding offensive lineman, center Clark Lawrence-' outstanding defensive back, Warren Isaac for the second week- defensive lineman, end Charles Johnson; best lick went to defensive end Garry King; most tackles, to linebacker David Deaton, who has turned in a pair of top performances. North Texas.State leads in the series, 10-4, and no conference game has ever been more important to the Eagles than this one coming up at Fouts Field, where much of the future depends on what kind of crowd'shows up. Honorary captains for Saturday night include Denton freshman Mike Wilkerson and Beaumont senior guard Bob Stout on offense and Dallas senior linebacker Jim Mclngvale and San Antonio senior safety Ted Gosline for the defensive unit. The Mean Green has now played before 44,649 fans in two games 19,131 at Texas Stadium and 25,518 in Memphis Memorial Stadium.

But the Denton team will go into this contest with two wins behind them while Sherman has already suffered one defeat at the hands of 8-AAAA's Highland Park. That 19-12 loss reflected the Wildcat's initial football game of the season, so Coach Ryan feels they were still "making first game mistakes that a lot of teams have already cleared Sherman has been a powerhouse in 13- AAAA for a long time. Some prognosticators are picking the Bearcats to go all the way to the top this year.

They could do just a with the personnel they have. Out of 20 returning (ettermen, there are two defensive standouts who make the already awesome defensive unit even more sound. Joel Estes. weakside linebacker who weighs in at 245 pounds, and George James, left defensive tackle at 220, are the a i stays on defense. They also sub as tight ends on offense.

Coach Ryan noted that the Bearcat of- fensive unit had not gelled last week against Strickland Falls Highland Park, so it was really hard to judge just how tough they might be tonight. But the coach is not figuring on them being push overs at all. Coach Ryan will stay with the same starting lineup tonight against the Bearcats. For the first time all season everybody will be suited up. Both Bobby Christian and Tommy Sprayberry are healed now, but the option for them to play remains with the coach.

Austin Baker will also be available now that his sprained knee is well. Bronco workouts have been good "two out of three days" this week according to Coach Ryan. The team, has mainly worked the offense against Sherman's defense and the defense against Sherman's offense. The Sherman defense seems to be the main Bronco worry this week, but the Denton defense has a reputation of its own to live up to. The offense behind quarterback John Bradford and runners Tony Castle and David Washington has taken on the air of success as well.

big. but we'll be ready," said Coach Ryan. "This will be the toughest team we have faced so far, but the teams get tougher and tougher from here on out." i To Willie Yank Golfers NEW YORK (AP) As it must for all men, age has caught up at last with Willie Mays. In a press conference that wasn't as emotional as he thought it would be, Mays announced Thursday that he would end his active playing career at the conclusion of this season. "You just can't play at 42 the way you did at 20," he admitted.

At 20, Mays was a fleet' fielder who often outran fly balls and set a standard of fielding and hitting that has rarely been matched. At 42 he has struggled through his final season, troubled by a series of nagging injuries and i i along with a distinctly unMayslike .211 batting average. "I've had a love affair with baseball," said Mays. MUIRFIELD, Scotland (DPI) specter of the United States' last Ryder Cup defeat by Britain 16 years ago loomed over the Americans today as they tried to make up a threepoint deficit on the second day of the biennial competition.
