Television Previews and reviews 8-B Sentinel Star, Wednesday, October 28, 1 981 ABC's 'The Fall Guy' an artless blend of comic and realistic elements Noel Holston ries was canceled after five low-rated months last year but subsequently won a much-deserved Emmy, will host a new late-night program on NBC early next year. Whether it will be a half-hour or an hour, NBC hasn't yet decided. But Letterman's new series will air at 12:30 a.m., following the "Tonight" show, which he has frequently guest-hosted. Tom Snyder's "Tomorrow" show, suffering from declining ratings in recent months, will follow Letter-man's show and may be trimmed to half-hour's length. Under long-term contract to NBC since June 1980, Letterman reportedly has been collecting a salary while NBC tried to find a suitable vehicle for his comedic talents.

For a while, there was talk of a Letterman show replacing the floundering "Saturday Night Live." But that show's recovery of much of its original freshness and sting closed out that possibility. Meanwhile, Tom Snyder's well-publicized feud with his "Tomorrow" co-host, Rona Barrett, whom NBC had lured away from ABC at great expense, has done little to ingratiate him to the NBC brass. IS IS iS Orange Seminole Cablevision has now added CBS Cable, the new cultural channel that features classical music, jazz, dance, documentaries and foreign films, to its service. each day. If the Dodgers polished off the Yankees Tuesday night, elminating the need for a deciding seventh World Series game, ABC will air the two-hour pilot episode of "The Fall Guy" tonight at 9. Here's hoping that it rainod or that the Yanks won anything to keep "The Fall Guy" off the air for another week. "The Fall Guy" is produced by Glen Larson, a notorious hack. This time Larson has "borrowed" heavily from two recent movies "Hooper," Burt Reynolds' comedy about Hollywood stuntmen, and "The Hunter," the late Steve McQueen's final picture.

Artlessly blending broad comic and painfully realistic dramatic elements, so that the former trivializes the latter, Larson nas come up with show of unthinkable insensitivity. Lee Majors stars in "The Fall Guy" as Colt Seavers, a veteran stuntman who has to moonlight as a bounty hunter to make ends meet. In the pilot, Seavers faces the seemingly impossible task of luring a bail jumper back to California from the small Arizona town where the man, Big John Cramer, not only resides but, as its corrupt sheriff, rules with an iron hand. Seavers accomplishes this by conning the greedy lawman into believing a major production company wants to use the town as a movie location. Sheriff Cramer stupidly agrees to participate in a "test" of his deputies' driving prowess in a desert chase that demolishes a fleet of squad cars and takes him across the state line where he can be arrested.

Not quite. Another singer is played by Paul Williams. The name dropping and use of guest stars to hype the pilot is downright shameless. Even Lee Majors' ex-wife, Farrah Fawcett, does a cameo at the end. "Have you been taking care of yourself?" she asks Seavers Majors who, in a blond wig, has just driven a stunt for her scene in a movie.

"I always do," he answers. "No you don't," she says. "I knew you remember?" Depending on how sentimental you are, this lated exchange will either put a lump in your throat or make you want to throw up. is is WESH-Channel 2 last week made Orlando television history, if not television history, period, by teaming two women, Mary Ollie Newman and Carol Gran-strom, as co-anchors of its evening newscasts. The arrangement wasn't permanent, however.

As of this week, Granstrom has begun sharing the in-studio anchoring duties with Scott Harris, while Newman, who had been working with Harris, has become a "remote anchor," doing live special reports from the field. iS IS Comedian David Letterman, whose NBC daytime se It's bad enough that such wholesale destruction is treated lightheartedly, much as it is on the "Dukes of Hazzard." What makes the "Fall Guy" pilot truly disgusting is that, in the midst of all this "comic" it loses sight of the horrendousness of the crime involved. Sheriff Cramer is first shown drunkenly killing a little boy in a hit-and-run collision in Los Angeles, then portrayed (by Eddie Albert, in a rare instance of bad acting) as a Boss Hogg-type villain. Only when Seavers is first put on the case does he express any outrage. After that, he behaves with all the seriousness of a Keystone cop.

Excluding this lapse in taste, "The Fall Guy" is just another dumb action show. Colt Seavers is assisted by his younger cousin Howie (Doug Barr), who supposedly graduated from Cornell University but acts about as bright as Jethro Clampett. The pilot's nonsensical subplot involves gangsters and a country music star played by Lou Rawls. 'Harper Valley' production halted after 4 segments A I -jmKtt 4 i i traumatic second season. The decision to halt production came when NBC executives took a look at the first four segments of the show for this fall and discovered that none followed the same course and all were veering further and further away from the hit movie that prompted NBC to commit to the show in the first place. When shooting does resume, there will be a new format, but no one is quite sure at this point what it will be.
