fecntinrl Urlnli, llencU Hills Still On Top; -A ni 1 3 Tuesday, Nov. 4, 1973 Preps By Larry Hamel, By Sentinel Star Service! Hollywood Hills clung to a one-point lead over Oak Ridge in the Class AAAA hirh srhnnl fnnthail rankings released Monday by the Florida Sports-writers Association. Hills drew nine of 16 first-place votes, while Oak Ridge received four. It was the second straight week that Hills stayed No. 1 by a single point, 1J7-136.

Following a 21-16 loss to Titusville Astronaut, Island dropped from third to ninth. Fort Pierce Central (fourth) and DeLand (10th) are other Central Florida teams ranked in AAAA. Astronaut came one point short of being a unanimous No. 1 AAA selection. Ocala Forest remained second, while New Smyrna Beach jumped to sixth.

Melbourne Central Catholic moved to fourth in Class AA. Chipley, once-beaten Pahokee and Palmetto are one-two-three. Alachua Santa Fe (7-1) jumped to fifth after upsetting Lake Butler Union County. Lake Butler stands sixth, a drop of four spots. Eustis fell to seventh following a 19-14 loss to Jacksonville Bolles.

Tallahassee FAMU High was a unanimous choice in A for the second straight week. No area teams are included in the A rankings. Here are the ratings with first-place votes in parentheses: and Plant City meet Nov. 14. If Plant City wins, it clinches the district.

If Brandon wins and Kathleen beats Lakeland on Nov. 21, Kathleen is the champ. The winner of that district will meet Tampa Jefferson, AAAA-10 titlist. The. Palatka South-St.

Augustine contest Nov. 21 will decide AAA-4. Both teams are unbeaten in district competition, but stand below .500 overall. South or St. Augustine will play Jacksonville Bolles, state-ranked and winner of AAA-3.

Starke Bradford County has not lost in AAA-5, but must defeat Suwanee Live Oak Nov. 21 to clinch. If Live Oak defeats Starke and Gainesville Buchholz beats Gainesville East-side on that same night, a three-way tie will evolve. If that happens, the district principals will vote on the most representative team. Dade City Pasco is still alive in AAA-6.

However, Tarpon Springs is unbeaten and looks to be the class of the district. Pasco needs to beat both Brooksville Hernando and Tarpon on back-to-back weeks. The AAA-5 and AAA-6 victors meet in first round playoff action. Ocala Forest, defending AAA champ, is unbeaten in AAA-7. The Wildcats have remaining district games against cross-town rival Vanguard and Leesburg.

Forest can lose to the latter and beat Vanguard and still claim the title. However, a Vanguard win would hand the Knights the championship. The AAA-7 winner will meet West Orange, the Warriors clinched the AAA-8 crown by beating Oviedo last Friday. The Titusville Astronaut-New Smyrna Beach game will decide AAA-9. ASTRONAUT, ranked first in its class, is unbeaten, while New Smyrna has a single district defeat.

The War Eagle-Barracuda winner will face the AAA-10 champ. That race is currently being contested between Riverview East Bay, Tampa Catholic and Tampa Jesuit. Jesuit is the only undefeated district team. Sebring has not lost in AAA-11. However, the Blue Streaks must still defeat Haines City.

If Haines City is victorious and Auburndale downs Bartow, a three way tie will develop, each team -having one district loss. In that case, Haines City would likely be picked to battle Fort Myers. AAA-12 champ. Fort Myers has already beaten Auburndale and a lightweight schedule would be held against Sebring. Haines City has won five games, all by shutout.

Lake Butler Union County has clinched the Class AA-5 title and will meet Jasper Hamilton County, AA-6 champ. Lake Butler suffered its initial loss of the season last Friday against Alachua Santa Fe. Santa Fe has sewn up the AA-4 championship. Crescent City, winners in AA-7, will meet twice-beaten Wildwood in the first round of the playoffs. Wildwood, undefeated in AA-8, has lost to AAA teams West Orange and Inverness Citrus.

The Eustis-Umatilla game Nov. 21 will determine the AA-9 champ. Both teams lost for the first time last Friday. That winner will meet the Groveland-Clermont victor. That contest is also on Nov.

21 and will decide AA-10. Fort Meade is undefeated in AA-12, but needs to beat Mulberry on Nov. 14. Mulberry has one district defeat, but can take the title by beating Fort Meade. Palmetto, AA-11 champ, will face the AA-12 champ.

Melbourne Central Catholic has clinched AA-13 and will battle Pahokee, AA-14 titlist. MCC is rated fourth in AA, Pahokee second. Ocala Marion Academy has sewn up the Class A-6 crown and will meet A-5 victor Trenton. 0 0 0 THE CLASS AAAA, District 3 girls volleyball tournament opens Thursday at Winter Park. A total of 21 Central Florida teams are entered.

Action begins at 5:30 p.m., continues all day Friday and ends with semifinals and finals on Saturday. DeLand, Oak Ridge and Evans are expected to be the top teams. Most District Titles Go Down To Wive The football season is eight weeks old, and just 10 of Central Florida's 22 districts have crowned champions. Obviously, the final three weeks will be big ones. Here is a rundown on the district title pictures and first round playoff matchups, starting with Class AAAA and working down.

The Oak Ridge-Winter Park game will decide the AAAA-6 crown. That comes as no surprise. It's been obvious1 since the start of the season the district would hinge on that game. The Oak Ridge-Winter Park winner will likely play DeLand. The Bulldogs need to beat Lake Brantley or Port Orange Spruce Creek to clinch the title.

Those two teams have combined for just five victories. DeLand lost to Oak Ridge, 12-7, two weeks ago. Gainesville is still alive in the AAAA-5 race, but DeLand would have to lose both of its remaining games. Merritt Island sewed up the AAAA-7 championship by beating Vero Beach three weeks ago. Fort Pierce Central clinched the AAAA-8 title by whipping Stuart Martin County last Friday.

Those two will meet Nov. 28 in the playoffs, but also play this Friday at Fort Pierce. THREE TEAMS are tied in AAAA-9. Lakeland Kathleen needs an assist from Brandon to win the district. Kathleen, Brandon and Plant City each have a single district loss.

Tampa King put Plant City and Brandon back into the race by forfeiting four games. Brandon Class AA Pts. 133 129 111 97 87 70 6 51 48 13 Oay-Cloud, Miami Pos. Team Record 1. Chipley (13) (7-0) 2.

There's an old line of reasoning that says when things are going poorly, it is well to do something differently even if it's wrong. Both Clemson and Florida State stood 1-6 going into that game.

Clemson's different move was a drastically revised defensive alignment. Florida State adjusted quickly. "We did a great job of coming off the football." said offensive coordinator Gary Gouwinkle, "and controlling the line of scrimmage in that first half. In the second half, they went back to the normal defense which probably was more effective." BY THEN Florida State was in front 29-7. The Seminoles substituted freely in the last half.

The different move the Seminoles made came a couple of games ago the shift of sophomore Larry Key from wingback to fullback. Since the move the Seminoles have shown a great deal more offensive consistency. Offensive coaches, after grading films, heralded Key as their "back of the week." In addition to gaining 105 yards and scoring once on a screen pass, he blocked well. We're Putting The Blast to High Prices! 4 Ply Polyester Cord AMBASSADOR TUBE- WHIIf. 111 Scores of other Central Florida players were: Al Ashley, Sanford, 98; Kelly Every, Ormond Beach, 72; Frank Montgomery, Kissimmee, 82; Briand Roddy, Orlando, 89; Mike Shofner, Melbourne, 75; Mike Sullivan, Ocala, 75; Steve Wilkinson, Orlando, 76, and Tom Winrow, Ocala, 80. Gary Koch, another Gator golfing star from Temple Terrace, was in a group of 19 players deadlocked at 72. Bean, the current Western Amateur champion and a young man many veteran golf observers say can't miss if he gets on the tour, turned professional Oct. 14, just two days before the school entrance deadline. "I wanted to play in the Rice Planters Amateur," said the 6-foot-4 Bean.

The Charleston, S.C., event was scheduled the second week in October. Bean, by the way, won the event. It will go into the books as the last amateur he won. Actually, with a break or two, Bean felt he could have shot a 64. He was six-under-par after 16 holes but bogeyed the 17th when he was bunkered with his second shot.

Bean is still a student at Florida. He plans to graduate in December with a degree in marketing. But with the golfing talent with which he has been blessed, a wise observation is that Bean will be playing professional golf the next several years instead of becoming involved with the business world. His father, Tommy, is co-owner of the Jeckyl and Hyde course in Lakeland and Andy admits, "I was playing golf before I ever started school." A strapping 208-pounder, Bean does have one regret about having to play this week in the qualifying school. He will not be able to attend the Florida-Georgia football game Saturday in Jacksonville.

"How about those Gators," he said with a big grin when asked about the Florida football team. "And I had tickets for the Georgia game. I'm sure going to hate to miss that one." But there will be other Georgia games. The most important thing right now is trying to earn a tournament players' card. 5'2 GILLETTE KODIAK STEEL BELTED BATTEPY GUAANTFE FUll 90 DY WARRANTY ft LIMITED WARRANTY Fr ffpiioment iithtn 0dv o' purchis buMfry p'O (Se'ttC-Itvr AMf 90 rtay wi rtp.ac ihc bitifry ii drirctivt? una chrg you only (or p'iod 0nt-tbip basfd on th rrguli tilling price it tht? tm ol return pro-'id oer ipeciiied number ol months Prtenltlion ol lei in-troice or guanniee cul.ticitt Giade, line level or other quality repreienlation relotej to private Bandardof marketers.
