D-6 The Orlando Sentinel, Wednesday, February 6, 1 985 Man: Gold scheme cost me $1 50,000 "1 4 i By Dan Tracy OF THE SENTINEL STAFF llr.i7T" I WVH 1111 I I fill II Mini umiiiiM i jami he was told, the deal would collapse. So he said he was given no receipts and did not write gold fund on any of his records. Calvacca said Brewer told the same story to other investors, including stockbrokers Leonard Witte and James Smalley and James Greene, who was chairman of the Orlando-Orange County Expressway Authority. Greene eventually got back his $10,000, but Witte lost $25,000 and Smalley lost $10,000, Calvacca said. Brewer spent the money for his own purposes, Calvacca said.

"I don't have to tell you there's no Santa Claus. I don't have to tell you there's no Easter Bunny. I don't have to tell you there's no gold fund," Calvacca said. The scheme ran from June 1980 to November 1983, the prosecutor said. Ettinger said he lost $130,000 more to Brewer in business and personal loans covering everything from Brewer's office rent' at the CNA Tower in downtown Orlando to tuition for the defendant's The charges on trial concern only the alleged gold fund.

At least $25,000 of his losses went for a failed attempt by Brewer to buy and renovate the Angebilt Hotel in downtown, Ettinger said. A retired Army officer, Ettinger said he saved money all his life for his son, who is 52 and afflicted with cerebral palsy. After leaving the service in 1944, Ettinger said he ran a small interior-decorating company in Miami for more than 30 years. The widower moved to Orlando in 1978. Horwitz said his client meant to reimburse Ettinger and the others.

"None of these people were forced to invest and many of them were paid back," he said. Much of Brewer's troubles can be attributed to the unsuccessful deal to buy the Angebilt, Horwitz said. "That is not a crime," he said. The trial is expected to last through the week. i mm him iT 1 Arthur Ettinger broke into sobs in a federal court in Orlando Tuesday as he testified about losing more than $150,000 he had saved for his blind and wheelchair-bound son.

"It was for his future," said Ettinger, a key prosecution witness against James Brewer, an Orlando businessman accused of bilking at least six area investors out of $280,000. Brewer's lawyer, Mark Horwitz of Orlando, said his client is guilty of nothing more than failing to pay some bills. "We have a difference of opinion here. We are not here to enforce a debtor's prison," he told a jury of 10 women and two men. Brewer, 36, is charged with eight counts of mail fraud and one count each of wire fraud and interstate transportation of stolen securities.

If convicted, he faces a maximum sentence of 55 years in prison and more than $17,000 in fines. Assistant U.S. Attorney Stephen Calvacca built much of the case Tuesday around Ettinger, an Orlando retiree who said he gave Brewer $150,000 in 17 cashier's checks ranging in size from $500 to $35,100. Ettinger, 78, said Brewer promised him a 20 percent return on his investment within six months. The defendant said he was putting the money into a secret gold fund run by generals of the U.S.

Marine Corps, Ettinger said. If word of the fund became public, Ettinger said RICHARD SHEPHERDSENTINEL Geri Hylander's birds attract attention after she moved them from her back porch. FIRE From D-1 Garaguso said he didn't know how the fire started, but that as soon as the hot spots had been knocked down he would investigate. Bill Weidman with the Kissim-mee Parks Department helped firefighters pull hoses. Weidman said the fire burned through his back yard into his front yard.

"My son managed to get our dog out of the pen in the backyard before the fire got there. But not before it melted the dog dish." After the fire was brought under control, Maxine Butler, 4713 Lake Trudy, carefully picked her way through the maze of hoses. She, like many other residents, had assisted in the battle. With smoke-filled eyes she turned to a bystander. "I guess we're safe now, but I'll tell you, I've never been so scared in all my life." Lago Court.

Bronson is the developer of Pine Lake Estates. The blaze charged straight into six firefighters from the Deer Run department who responded with a tanker, woods truck and a pumper and three forest rangers who responded from a nearby muck fire. The forest rangers, who have been fighting the muck fire 2 miles away for the past 10 days, brought a bulldozer with them. For a moment it looked as if Bronson's two-story brick home would be lost, but the tenacious firefighters held their ground and managed to stop the flames in the front yard. "I was tired before I got here," said exhausted forest ranger Gary Chancellor.

"We saw the smoke from the muck fire, and when we learned that there were houses in danger we got here as fast as we could. We're just lucky it didn't get the home." a strong wind burned east to Lago Court. A dozen homes in the area had fire burning in their back yards; in three cases, the fire leaped over roof tops and set front yards afire. Geri Hylander, 4701 Lake Trudy Drive, was so frightened by the blaze that burned right up to her home that she moved 16 parrots off her back porch to get them away from the smoke. "I thought the house was going to burn down.

As I was trying to get my birds out some fellow, who I think must have been a city worker, helped me move them out." When the fire started burning east it headed straight for Odell Bronson's home at the end of Funeral notices Joseph A. Boss, 87, 3201 Minnesota Winter Park, died Monday.
