18 DAILY WORLD Opelouwj, Lo Oct. 22, 1978 Nation's Top 20 Texas Proving To Be Jinx For Arkansas' Holtz 4 quarter, to break one Penn State record and tie another Saturday in leading the second-ranked Nittany Lions to a 45-15 victory over Syracuse. Fusina, rounding into form quickly following a slow start this season, threw for 169 yards in Penn State's 21-point first quarter. He hit Scott Fitzkee for a 21-yard score on the Nittany Lions' second play from scrimmage just 2:05 into the game. 4ter in the quarter, he hit fullback Matt Suhey on a short screen pass that turned into a 48-yard touchdown play and found tailback Mike Guman on a 9-yard scoring strike, which was set up by a 65-yard toss to Fitzkee.

Fusina and Fitzkee teamed on an 11-yard TD pass in the third quarter. That play gave Fusina 39 touchdowns passing and running for his career, breaking the Nittany Lions' career record of 38 set by Lydell Mitchell. The four scoring passes also tied a school record set by Tom Sherman against Pittsburgh in 1967, giving Fusina 15 records he either holds or shares. Nebraska Survives BOULDER, Colo. (UPI) Nebraska Coach Tom Osborne, whose team has made a tradition of beating Big Eight Conference rival Colorado, was surprised by his the Cornhuskers' easy 52-14 rout over the Buffaloes Saturday.

"It was a lopsided win, and I was very surprised," Osborne said. "I thought we would win by maybe a couple of touchdowns, but they (the Buffaloes) just fell apart." Colorado appeared en route to a possible upset victory in the opening period, scoring 14 points after capitalizing on Nebraska errors, but the threat soon faded. Maryland Easily COLLEGE PARK, Md. (UPI) Maryland forced seven turnovers Saturday turning five into scores and the sixth-ranked Terrapins rolled to an easy 39-0 Atlantic Coast Conference victory over Wake Forest. Scoring in each quarter, the Terrapins, 7-0, used three touchdowns by Alvin Maddox, two by Steve Atkins, and a pair of Ed Loncar field goals to back their defense which' recovered five fumbles and intercepted two passes.

Michigan Rebounds MADISON, Wis. (UPI) -Quarterback Rick Leach ran for two touchdowns and passed for another Saturday in guiding a powerful running attack that sent ninth-ranked Michigan to a 42-0 victory over Wisconsin. The victory gave the Wolverines a 2-1 Big Ten record and 5-1 record overall. A record Camp Randall crowd of 80,024 saw the Badgers AUSTIN. Texas (UPI) Lou Holtz, who has lost only to Texas in two years as Arkansas' head coach, said Saturday it was the Longhorns' passing to Olympic sprinter Johnny "Lam" Jones and freshman Lawrence Sampleton that enabled Texas to upset the third-ranked Razorbacks 28-21 in a contest of Southwest Conference leaders.

"It was a disappointing loss," said Holtz. "The difference was when Texas had one-on-one passes they caught it. When we had one-on-one, we didn't." Lam Jones caught two touchdown passes and Sampleton, a 6-foot-6, 215-pounder, caught one. Sampleton said Longhorn Coach Fred Akers had advised him early in the week to be prepared to play against Arkansas, his first varsity action. Sampleton apparently heeded Akers' words, catching four passes for 108 yards, including a 36-yard touchdown that boosted Texas to a 13-point halftime lead.

"He is terrific to throw to," said quarrterback Randy McEachern. "He's got hands that pull down anything." McEachern, who earlier in the season was temporarily benched in favor of freshman Donnie Little, guided the Longhorns flawlessly and completed ll-of-22 passes. Sooners Roll AMES, Iowa (UPI) Billy Sims rushed for 231 yards and one touchdown on just 20 carries Saturday to power unbeaten and top-ranked Oklahoma to a 34-6 Big Eight Conference victory over Iowa State. Quarterback Thomas Lott added two touchdowns and guided the Sooners' wishbone offense to a 21-0 first-quarter lead. Oklahoma piled up 466 yards on the ground, including 316 in the first half Sims, the Big Eight's leading rusher, ran for 178 yards in the first half, including runs of 63- and 53-yards that set up secondquarter field goals by Uwe Von Schamann.

Sims darted 20 yards for a touchdown in the third period. His 20 carries gave him a whopping 11.5 yards per try average. Oklahoma, which beat Iowa State for the 17th straight time, ran its record to 7-0 and 3-0 in the Big Eight. ISU, losing its third straight game, fell to. 4-3 and 0-3.

The Cyclones lost starting linebackers Tom Boskey and Mike Leaders in the first half because of injuries. Lott was sidelined by an ankle injury in the third quarter and Junior J.C. Watts finished the game. Penn State In Romp UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. (UPI) Chuck Fusina threw four touchdown passes, three in the first suffer their first defeat and slip to 3-1 in the Big Ten and 4-1-1 overall.

(UPI) -Cornerback Brian Baggott returned a pair of intercepted passes 61 and 62 yards for touchdowns Saturday to help 12th-ranked UCLA score a 45-0 rout over error-prone California. The Bruins, 4-0 in the PacificlO Conference and 6-1 overall, set a conference record with 10 pass interceptions as Cal suffered its worst defeat since a 66-0 rout by Alabama in 1973. Cal, which went into the game with a 2-0 league record and a chance to take over first place, also contributed a pair of fumbles and never seriously threatened to score. Houston Stomps SMU DALLAS (UPI) Quarterbacks Danny Davis and Delrick Brown fueled a relentless ground attack that finally wore down Southern Methodist Saturday and carried the llth-ranked Houston Cougars to a 42-28 victory. The victory kept Houston tied for first place in the Southwest Conference.

Baylor Upsets "COLLEGE Texas (UPI) The hard-luck Baylor Bears stunned 14th-ranked Texas with Steve Smith's trick-play touchdown pass Saturday and for the first time in six games this season made their lead hold up for a 24-6 upset victory, It was their first win on the Aggies home field in 13 years. 4-2 this season, mustered only two Tony Franklin field goals of 19 and 45 yards in the first half to lose their second straight Southwest Conference game after being ranked No. 6 in the nation. Baylor's victory stopped an incredible string of five losses by a total of 21 points. In each of those losses Baylor led at halftime or in the fourth quarter.

Pitt Edges Fla. State PITTSBURGH (UPI) Jacobs ran 13 yards for a touchdown late in the second quarter and defensive end Hugh Green recovered a Florida State fumble on the Pitt 22-yard line with less than two minutes remaining Saturday to give the 15th-ranked Panthers a 7-3 victory over the Seminoles. Missouri Scores 56 MANHATTAN, Kan. (UPI) -Quarterback Phil Bradley rushed for one touchdown and hit tight end Kellen Windslow for two more scores Saturday to propel nth-ranked Missouri to a 56-14 rout of Big Eight rival Kansas State. Bradley rushed 62 yards and completed 10-of-19 passes for 148 yards to carry Missouri to its fifth win in seven games and second in three conference tilts.

Notre Dame In Win AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. (UPI) Quarterback Joe Montana passed for two touchdowns and ran for two others Saturday to lead Notre Dame to an easy 38-15 victory over Air Force, Montana ran for second-quarter touchdowns of 1 and 4 yards and completed scoring passes of 56 yards to Kris Haines and 9 yards to Dennis Grindinger. Vagas Ferguson scored on a 24-yard run set up by an interception and Charles Male kicked a 42-yard field goal for the Irish. Purdue Blanks Illinois CHAMPAIGN, 111. (UPI) -Mark Herrmann threw a 14-yard touchdown pass to Mike Harris late in the first half and Scott Sovereen added two fourth-quarter field goals Saturday to spark No.

19 Purdue to a 13-0 victory over Illinois. The victory kept Purde atop the Big Ten with a 3-0 mark. The Boilermakers are 5-1 overall. Navy Stays Unbeaten ANNAPOLIS, Md. (UPI) Bob Lata kicked: a 27-yard field goal late in the third quarter and fullback Larry Klawinski raced 33 yards for a touchdown with 4:39 remaining Saturday to lift 20th-ranked and unbeaten Navy to a 9-0 win over stubborn William and Mary.

Klawinski, who only carried seven times, burst over right guard on second-and-4 play and ran untouched to score. Quarterback Bob Leszczynski, holding for the conversion, bobbled the ball and his desperation pass for two points was incomplete. The victory moved ASU into first-place in the conference with a 1-0 record and left the Indians 4-3 over-all, McNeese is 0-2 in the league and 4-3 on the season. Dobbs' field goal, his sixth consecutive of the season, complimented his 24-yarder that put the Indians ahead 3-0 in the second quarter. The only other score in the game came on a 31-yard field goal by freshman Don Stump of McNeese late in the third quarter. Southern Defeated JACKSON, Miss. (UPI) Alcorn State University took advantage of two fumbles Saturday night to drop Southwest Athletic Conference foe Southern University of Baton Rouge, 16-7.

Southern struck in the first period on a 53-yard bomb from quarterback Elgin Stewart to end George Farmer. Bobby Magee kicked the extra point. The Alcorn defense, which spent most of the game in its own territory, recovered a fumble on the 3-yard line in the first period and Braves' freshman running back Johnny Mitchell scored from the 1. Wilfredo Rosales kicked the extra point. The Braves' defense fell on another loose ball moments later on the 30-yard line, but the Alcorn offense sputtered and Rosales booted a 31-yard field goal.

The Braves put together a 60yard drive in the third period with Mitchell scoring from the 1. The extra point attempt was blocked. Grambling By Six GRAMBLING, La. (UPI) Greg Wilson returned the opening kickoff 94 yards for a touchdown and Grambling held the powerful Jackson State offense to just 186 total yards to lead the way for a 13-7 Grambling victory Saturday. The loss was the first of the year for Jackson State and dropped its record to 6-1.

The Tigers improved their record to 5-0-1. career. The old record of 102 was held by Frank Maxwell, who ended his career in 1976. SLU came back to march the NLU six, where the Lions had third and one, but Jay Marse dropped Calandro for a three-yard loss and Frank Londono came in to kick a 25-yard field goal. A PARTIALLY blocked punt by Danny Boudreaux set up SLU's first touchdown late in the second period.

The kick by Floyd traveled only 18 yards to the Indians' 44 and Wells promtly ran 21 yards. Calandro ran for 10 and three before Wells hit Calandro for 10 and the TD and it was 10-7 halftime. Johnson changed that with the second half kickoff. He took the ball seven yards deep in the end zone, went up the middle and then out down the right sidelines to go the distance. The run tied the school record for longest runback and was NLU's 12th touchdown of the year from 38 yards or more yards out.

The Indians have scored 19 touchdowns this season. The Lions drove to the NLU eight later in the third period but were thrown back to the 16 and failed to get on the board when Londono missed a 33-yard field goal. in nnrt jail, SHREVEPORT, La. (UPI) -Tailback George Yates scored two touchdowns and substitute quarterback Eric Barkley threw two scoring passes Saturday night, helping Louisiana Tech crush archrival Northwestern (La.) State 45-20. Tech ran up a 24-0 halftime lead and held Northwestern to 15 yards offense in the half.

It was 45-0 before the Demons scored. It was the eighth consecutive victory for Tech in the series, played at State Fair Stadium. A crowd of 21,000 watched. Yates scored on runs of 2 and 16 yards, while Barkley threw one touchdown pass to Johnny Giordano for 62 yards and another to Sammy Willis from 11 yards out. Tech's other scores came when Mike McHale recovered a blocked Dennis Pendergraft punt in the end zone and cornerback Lavon James ran an interception back 19 yards for a score.

Kicker Keith Swilley tacked on a 20-yard field goal and all six extra points. Northwestern's three touchdowns came in the final 11 minutes. Quarterback Rex Henderson scored on a pair of lyard runs and Mike Almond hauled in a 38-yard pass from fellow wide receiver Waymond Waters. Nicholls Nips THIBODAUX, La. (UPI) Quarterback Tim Bailey engineered a 10-point third quarter, including his 3-yard scoring run, to lift Nicholls State to a 10-7 Gulf South Conference win over MississippiCollege Saturday night.

Bailey, who shared quarterbacking duties with Butch Case during the night, brought the Colonels from 7-3 behind in the third period to their winning score. The Colonels took over the ball at the Mississippi College 46 yard-line, and 12 plays later. Bailey waltzed into the end zone from 3 yards out for the go-ahead score. Mississippi College had led most of the game after scoring on quarterback Dwight Hughes' 13-yard pass to Keith Ainsworth in the second quarter. The excellent 92-yard, ll-play drive was sparked by Ezra Tate's 53yard gallop up the middle to the Nicholls 34.

Tate, the GSC's leading rusher who was a doubtful participant after sustaining and injury last week, was healthy enough to rush for ill yards on 19 carries. Nicholls State's Louis Henry gained 74 yards. The Colonels cut the lead to 7-3 in the third quarter on Glenn Magee's 25-yard NLU's final touchdown came with 13:04 left in the game when Jimmy Husser ran 12 yards on a reverse. The TD came after Gary Hurd recovered a SLU fumble at the Lions' 42-yard line. Key plays in the five-, play drive were a 14-yard pass to Charles Kingrey and a 12-yard pass interference call against the Lions.

"I DIDN'T expect a scoring affair," said Southeastern's Coach Billy Brewer after the game; "I didn't think they would be able to make that many big plays. We thought we were well prepared on defense, they haven't been able to run on anybody with any consistency. I knew our kids would hang tough." A very disappointed John David Crow of Northeast said, "When a good football team gets teat and I think we have a fair team the losing coach always says we played poorly. And that's just what I'm saying now. I didn't see our defense stopping anybody and we didn't move the ball except for the razzle dazzle plays.

They didn't do anything on defense that we didn't expect." The 81-yard bomb to Floyd which tied for the longest pass in Northeast history came with 5:48 to go in the first quarter. He had three catches for 105 yards for the game and now has 105 catches for his 600 WITH IRON (Special to the Daily World) MONROE As usual, Northeast Louisiana came up with some big plays but Southeastern quarterback Johnny Wells came up with the biggest ones in leading the Lions to a 25-21 thriller over the Indians here Saturday afternoon. Northeast got an 81-yard pass from Kirby Arceneaux to John Floyd and a 100-yard kickoff return by Nathan Johnson but Wells hit Andre Lennix with a 47-yard pass in the fourth quarter to set up his own fourth down, one-yard sneak for the winning touchdown. The victory was Southeastern's third straight and gave the Lions a 4-2-1 record. Northeast after winning four straight is also 4-2-1.

WELLS COMPLETED 14 of 19 passes for 205 yards and two TD strikes. He hit Tommy Calandro with a 10-yard scoring toss in the second period and Ron Sellers with an eight-yarder in the third period. Freshman Mack Boatner supplied the punch on the ground for the Lions, rushing 18 times for 104 yards while Calandro had 60 yards on 17 carries. Except for the long scoring plays, Southeastern's rugged defense, first in the nation in scoring defense among Division II schools, kept the explosive NLU offense under control. Northeast gained 245 yards, only 56 of them on the ground.
