(UPI) -Running back Artie Shankle rushed for a pair of scores and placekicker Don Stump kicked three field goals to lead McNeese State to a 31-10 win over Northeast Louisiana Saturday night. The loss was the first of the year for the Indians, who dropped to 4-1-1. McNeese upped its record to 4-2. Shankle gained 139 yards on 14 carries in helping rip the Northeast defense for a total of 250 yards on the ground. The Indians took a 10-7 lead on Bill Weimer's 34-field goal and Bud Cespiva's 65-yard pass to John Floyd, sandwiched around Wendell Lejeune's 5yard run for McNeese.

From there, McNeese scored the last 24 points of the game. Stump connected on field goals of 24 and 44 yards in the second quarter after a pair of interceptions set up short drives. Shankle blasted 3 yards just before the half making it 20-10 at intermission. Stump added a 33-yard field goal in the third quarter and Shankle, who gained 100 yards for the third consecutive game, tallied again on a 1-yard plunge to make the final 31-10. Northeast quarterbacks were intercepted four times and the Indians also lost a fumble to aid in their undoing.

Grambling Ties ITTA BENA, Miss. (UPI) -Mississippi Valley State and unbeaten Grambling played to a scoreless tie Saturday as neither team could advance much beyond field goal range. Grambling now stands at 4-01 overall and 2-0-1 in the Southwestern Athletic Conference, Valley is now 3-3-1 and 0-2-1 on the season. Valley drove inside the Grambling 10-yard line in the second quarter but was penalized for holding and Issac Kinnel's 25-yard field goal attempt was wide. Valley later was held at the Grambling 20yard line.

Grambling kicker Larry Scrubbs tried a 35-yard field goal in the third period but it Was blocked by Valley's Willie Fulton. Grambling drove to the Valley 33, following a pass interception by Al Allen in the fourth period but lost the ball on downs. S'Eastem Bombs HAMMOND, La. (UPI) Mack Boatner rushed for 79 yards and a touchdown and the swarming Southeastern Louisiana defense held Livingston to just 13 yards rushing to lead the Lions to a 33-0 shutout in a Gulf South Conference game Saturday. The Lions, who entered the game with the top defense in NCAA Division II, recorded their second shutout of the year in holding Livingston to 13 yards rushing and 59 yards passing in winning their homecoming contest.

Southeastern upped its record to 3-2-1, while Livingston slipped to 2-4. Boatner scored the Lions' third touchdown of the game just before the half on a 16-yard run, making it 21-0 at intermission. Robert Hicks scored on a 22-yard sprint and quarterback Johnny Wells tallied on a 3yard run for the Lions'first two scores. Boatner's score was set up by Laverne Lee's interception of quarterback Bobby Moore pass at the Livingston 34. Three plays later, Boatner blasted in.

La. Tech Wins RUSTON, La, (UPI) Scooter Spruiell dashed 68 yards with a Keith Thibodaux pass and then set up the gamewinning field goal with a fourth-quarter punt return as Louisiana Tech stunned previously undefeated Ball State 17-7 Saturday night. Spruiell latched on to Thibodaux'spass behind the Ball State secondary in the first quarter to give the Bulldogs a 7-0 lead. The pass was the first touchdown scored against the tough Ball State defense in 18 quarters. Thibodaux, who completed 11 of 39 passes for 213 yards, had trouble moving against Ball State the rest of the game, as the Bulldogs had to rely on special teams to get their final 10 points in the fourth period.

Nicholls Beaten THIBODAUX, La. (UPI) -David Snokhaus tossed five passes to James Folston, two of them for touchdowns, and powered Cameron College to a 23-17 minute victory Saturday night over Nicholls State. (UPI) The University of Louisville, led by fullback Nathan Poole's 132 yards in 11 carries, rolled to a 51-7 win over Northwest Louisiana in a listless affair at Fairgrounds Stadium Saturday night. The easy victory improved Louisville's record to 4-1, while the visitors fell to 3-3.

The Cardinals, who host Boston University next Saturday night, racked up a 51-0 lead before Northwest Louisiana got on the scoreboard with 3:03 remaining in the game on a 2 yard run by Barry Rubin. Dennis Pendergraft kicked the point after. Southern Blitzed BATON ROUGE, La. (UPI) -Perry Harrington rambled for 151 yards, including 52 and 47-yard runs for touchdowns, to spark undefeated Jackson State to an easy 41-14 Southwestern Athletic Conference victory over Southern Saturday night. In addition to the offensive line, the Saints' offense, once an explosive mechanism, has suffered from back-field injuries which have crept up to make Nolan wonder if he were born under a bad sign. Running back Chuck Muncie has been hobbling for three weeks with a ligament pull, but he is listed as probable for the 49ers. It will be a homecoming of sorts here Sunday afternoon when Nolan brings in his Saints to meet the 49ers at Candlestick Park. The kickoff time is set for 3 p.m.

(CDT), In addition to Nolan, three other members of his staff have reunions in mind when the struggling 2-4 Saints meet the 49ers who are also reeling from a miserable Season at 1-5: Saints' offensive line coach Dick Stanfel, linebacker coach Ed Beard and defensive backfield coach Chet Franklin all remember San Francisco well. NOT ONLY ARE the Saints desperate for a win, but New Orleans is also combing the league's waiver lists for players this week. Injuries to all but one starter on the offensive line has forced Nolan to move around personnel and patch up holes there, and his placekicker, Rich Szaro, has been placed on the injured reserve list for the rest of the season. Szaro, out with a groin pull, was forced to kick right footed in last weeks 24-16 loss to Cleveland. To replace Szaro, the Saints have signed Tom Jurich, a 10th round choice of the Steelers this season.

Jurich hurt his leg earlier in the year and was cut by Pittsburgh. The Saints contacted Jurich in Arizona where he was a football coach and working in a liquor store parttime. With both teams searching for winning combinations, the bettors' lines this week have been erratic. for La. David Vidrine has earned both the Jefferson Standard Fast Start Award and the Award of Excellence as a result of his fine performance during the first quarter as a representative in Ville Platte. Regional Agency NEW ORLEANS (UPI) Soccer-style kicker Ed Murray booted field goals of 43, 27 and 40 yards to lead the Tulane Green Wave to a 9-S win over winless Boston College Saturday night in the Louisiana SufSerdome. Murray, Tulane's all-time leading placekicker with 125 points, tied the game 3-3 just before the half after missing two earlier attempts.

The Canada native gave the Green Wave, now 2-4, its second consecutive win, the first time since 1975 that the Greenies have won two in a row. Boston College quarterback Jay Palazola engineered a 73yard scoring drive on the Eagles' first possession, capped by Tim Moorman's 24-field goal. Murray, who missed field goal tries of 44 and 39 yards after Tulane recovered a pair of Boston College fumbles, finally connected with 14 seconds left in the half on the 43-yarder to tie the score at intermission. Boston College, 0-5, took the second half kickoff, but Mike Curry fumbled and Mike Sims recovered for Tulane on the Eagle 29. Greenie quarterback Roch Hontas hit Darrel Griffin for 14 yards before Murray kicked the winning threepointer from 27 yards out with 11 12 left in the third quarter.

Murray followed soon after with a 40-yader to make it 9-3, and the Green Wave defense thwarted a late Boston College drive to preserve the win. Palazola started the Eagles at their own 18 and drove them to the Tulane 31. But on fourthand-1, nose guard Wilfred Simon and linebacker Frank Robinson stopped him short of the first. Tulane took over and ran out the clock. Tulane running back Marvin Christian was the game's leading rusher with 176 yards on 30 carries.

He also caught three passes for 34 yards. lttt-1 III l-l 45 INCH LEATHER TRENCH COAT Made of light weight soft smooth cowhide with all the genuine features of a trench coat.
