They said that while the market was unable to make any substantial new gains Thursday, it performed well in maintains Wednesday's advance. The Dow Jones average of 30 industrials stocks finished Thursday's session ahead 1.25 at 901.80. ' Volume on the Big Board reached 17.78 million shares, well ahead of Wednesday's pace when 15.64 million shares changed hands. On the American Stock Exchange, where the price-change index moved up .06 to 25.74, 4.86 million shares changed hands, compared with Wednesday's turnover of 4.03 million shares. The Associated Press 60-stock average was up 1 .2 to 328.9, wjth industrials up 1.5, rails ahead .9 and utilities up .5. Advances outpaced declines 861 to 557 among the 1,720 Big Board issues traded. On the Amex, gainers led losers 498 to 375 among 1,147 issues traded. Pan American, off % to 10 on 284,000 shares, topped the Big Board active list. Trading including a block of 144 ,000 shares at 10.
