Yahoo 22.92 +.61 By The Associated Press WASHINGTON — The U.S. economy continued to be sluggish in the spring, dragged down by lackluster retail sales and weak manufacturing, the Federal Reserve said Wednesday. Offering hope for a rebound down the road, orders to factories posted their first gain for the year In its latest snapshot of economic conditions around the country, the Fed reported "a slow pace of economic activity in March and early April." The survey, based on information supplied by the Fed's 12 regional banks, will be used by Fed policy-makers at their next meeting on May 15 to set interest rates. Seeking to stave off recession, the central bank has slashed interest rates four times this year, totaling 2 percentage points, in an effort to rejuvenate economic growth. On Wall Street, blue-chip stocks fell on some mild profit- taking. The Dow Jones industrial average closed down 21.66 points at 10,876.68. The Fed survey "paints a picture of a very flat economy," said Mark Zandi, chief economist at Economycom. "I think it gives policy-makers a green light to ' continue to ease." In the survey, the Fed said retail sales were weak in March and while they strengthened in April, most Fed districts expected "only small gains at best" in the coming months. Consumer spending accounts for two-thirds of all economic activity and has been a main force propping up the struggling economy. Some economists worry consumer spending may weaken in coming months based on expectations that the nation's unemployment rate, now at 4.3 percent, will continue to rise. In the Boston, Kansas City Philadelphia and St. Louis districts, "big-ticket items — such as jewelry appliances and electronics — have been slow movers," the survey said. Guy's has two potential buyers Assets auction would bring end to longtime Missouri company By The Associated Press KANSAS CITY, Mo. - A liquidator has been hired to auction the assets of Guy's Foods June 7, which would bring an end to a snack food company founded in the area 63 years ago. LaSalle Bank of Chicago hired a Dallas liquidator to sell the Liberty company's -equipment. The bank is owed between $15 million and $20 million by General Products and Services, Guy's current owner. The bank ordered the Guy's i^lant in Liberty to be closed in February, throwing about 600 people out of work. That decision came a year after Guy's filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. Guy's makes potato chips. pretzels, snack nuts, tortilla chips, ready-to-eat popcorn and corn chips. Family Snacks, which operates Guy's Foods, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy reorganization in February 2000 and was sold to General Products and Services. General Products, a snack food company owned by private investors in Chicago and elsewhere, defaulted on its debt to LaSalle Bank. Since then, LaSalle has been negotiating with potential buyers. The Kansas City Star reported Wednesday that two potential buyers have emerged. They are Crown Capital Corp., an investment firm based in the St. Louis area; and The Hain Celestial Group, a publicly traded natural foods company based in Uniondale, N.Y. Mark Stisser, a managing partner of Crown Capital, acknowledged his company's interest in Guy's and said its "No. 1 objective is to save jobs." MARKETS Stisser said negotiations with LaSalle Bank had been difficult and declined to predict whether a deal could be worked out. He said Crown Capital will retain the Guy's name if it is the successful bidder. Crown Capital has reached a preliminary agreement with LaSalle but has not reached a final agreement because of the bank's insistence on various financial guarantees. Officials of the Hain Celestial Group, the product of last year's merger of the Hain Food Group and Celestial Seasonings, were not available for comment. The company and its subsidiaries make natural, organic, specialty and snack foods, including Celestial Seasonings teas, Hain Pure Foods cooking oils and Westbrae Natural soy products. Guy's at one time employed as many as 1,000 workers, making it one of Liberty's biggest employers. MONEY RATES Daily money rates Irom The Associated Press.
