APRotesL By TONY BEAUGH Daily World Sports Writer SSI- LOS ANGELES (UPI) On his biggest night as a football player, Tommy Hart seemed a little bitter. After a spectacular national television performance in a 16-0 upset victory over the Los Angeles Rams, the San Francisco 49ers' defensive end let his feelings spill out.

"It's tough to play as long as I have and not get any recognition," Hart reflected. "Do you know I've never made any all-star teams? Not a It would be nice to be recognized once in a while. A big game like this on TV will help, of course. Maybe there'll be a few more big games before I'm through. I sure hope so." Maybe Hart, a nine-year pro from Morris Brown of Atlanta, has been overlooked because San Francisco's other defensive end is All-Pro Cedrick Hardman.

But it was. all Hart's show Monday night. He forced James Harris into three fumbles as the 49ers, with a club record 10 sacks, moved ahead of the previously unbeaten Rams to the top of the National Football Conference West standings. Improving their record to 4-1 under new Coach Monte Clark, the 49ers jolted the Rams with all their points in the first 5:56 of the second half. Jim Plunkett, the 1970 Heisman Trophy winner, passed for two touchdowns.

After a scoreless first half, Plunkett hit Ram castoff Willie McGee on a 36-yard touchdown pass on the fourth play of the second half to put the 49ers ahead, 7-0. Hart then got to Harris twice in the next four minutes, both deep in Los Angeles territory, and forced him to fumble. Taking the ball on the Ram 5 and Ram 14, the 49ers converted the Los Angeles mistakes into insurance points. Tight end Tom Mitchell caught a six-yard Plunkett pass on the goalline after the first recovery and Steve Mike-Mayer added an 18-yard field goal after the second fumble. "Yes, this is easily my biggest game," Hart said.

"This really feels great. "We had good pass coverage tonight. Then they got behind and had to throw the ball. It wasn't Harris' fault. We were on him so quick he didn't even have time to think.

Now we're In first place. But we won't be able to relax. We were up tonight but it's hard being up for all 14 games." Added Plunkett, "It's a big boost but we can't enjoy this one too long. We can enjoy it tonight. We've got to go to work tomorrow for the next one." The 49ers, who have a 4-1 record while the Rams are 3-11, appear to be a definite threat to end the Rams' three-year dynasty in the NFC West.

Georgia dropped from fourth to Uth following its 21-17 loss to Ole Miss. Peisisleir efls Unfits tack Dim After knocking off the Philadelphia Phillies two straight in the National League pennant race, the Cincinnati Reds seem primed to defend their World Championship crown. The Reds, western division winners in the NL, can advance to the World Series for the second year in a row if they can beat the Phils today in the third game of the best three out of five playoff setup. The Big Red Machine has taken the measure of Philadelphia, champions of the eastern division, 6-3 and 6-2 in the first two contests. AS USUAL, THE Reds have gotten good hitting from their starting eight in collecting six runs in each of the two games.

The regulars, however, got some help from pitcher Don Gullett in the first game as he drove in three of Cincinnati's runs. But, the surprising aspect of the Reds' performance thus far has been their pitching, which has been called suspect at best. In that first game, Gullett hurled a two-hitter for eight innings before leaving with a stiff shoulder. After surviving a shaky start, Gullett settled down to retire the next 21 Phillie batters over seven innings. Gullett, 11-3 on the regular season, is just coming around from a bad arm that reduced the big left-hander's workload considerably.

IN THE SECOND game, rookie Pat Zachary allowed two runs in five innings for the victory. Zachary, up for Rookie of the Year honors, received excellant relief help from Pedro Borbon, who pitched four full innings of shutout ball in gaining the save. Cincinnati seems to have a big advantage over Philadelphia when it comes to experience. The Reds have won their division five of the last seven years and have appeared in the World Series three times during that span. Philadelphia, on the other hand, has only two regulars that have seen and experienced post-season pressure.

This inexperience has shown in the first encounters, as the Phils have committed numerous critical fielding errors. ONE OF THOSE miscues proved extremely costly, (continued on Page 8) season. At the conclusion of the schedule, I expect to return to the full-time role of general manager, with the responsibility at that point of assisting the new 1977 coaching staff in building the Falcons' fortunes on the football field." Peppier, who last coached as an assistant at Wake Forest in 1962, said Smith's decision "caught me by surprise. I felt a change was needed. But I didn't figure this is what it would be." Smith said he and Peppier agreed "philosophically" that they were opposed to making a coaching change at midseason but the "situation dictated that we do just that." Campbell, defensive coordinator for the Falcons for six seasons under Norm Van Brocklin, replaced Van Brocklin after eight games of the 1974 season when the Falcons, a best-ever 9-5 the year before, were 2-6.

ATLANTA (UPI) Atlanta Falcons General Manager Pat Peppier officially took on the added responsibility as head coach Monday, but says Bill Walsh will be doing much of the job. Peppier was named to replace ousted Head Coach Marion Campbell by owner Rankin Smith and quickly pointed out that since he hadn't done any coaching in 14 years, he was going to rely heavily on Walsh, who was moved up from offensive line coach to assistant head coach. Peppier indicated that if he has the say, Walsh will be named coach next year. "My ambitions are not to be a football coach," said the balding, 54-year-old Peppier, who came to the Falcons from the Miami Dolphins as general manager 20 months ago. anc' bell of the 1 a Grenadier Guard-, By UPI The Kojac trend apparently is over at Georgia. Defeat has stilled the barber's shears. Many of the Georgia players, at the beginning of the season, shaved their heads bald in a togetherness act an vowed to shave the head of a coach after each victory. Head coach Vince Dooley promised to get his locks shorn if the Bulldogs finished the season unbeaten. Four coaches joined the ranks of Kojac lookalikes as Georgia rolled to a 4-0 record and vaulted to fourth in the national rankings.

Saturday, with offensive coordinator Bill Pace the next scissors target, Mississippi struck a blow for hair with a 21-17 upset. Now, with Georgia 4-1 and 11th in the rankings, most of the bald players say they'll start letting "Right now, it looks like some inexperienced people are going to get the footballlearning experience of their lives Saturday night in Memphis," Tyler said. Mississippi worked out 90 minutes Monday with coach Ken Cooper warning that the win over Georgia was "great, but we've got five more games left and South Carolina is a very big hurdle." Ole Miss meets the Gamecocks Saturday night in Columbia. At Auburn, coach Doug Barfield said the Tigers appeared to be bouncing back from their loss to Memphis State last weekend. Auburn takes on Georgia Tech Saturday at Auburn.

Vanderbilt went through a two-hour workout without pads Monday as te Commodores readied for their trip to Georgia. their hair grow again. The Bulldogs, still strong contenders for the Southeastern Conference championship, hope to get back on the victory trail against Vanderbilt Saturday in Athens. At Florida State, Bobby Bowden was basking in the glow of the longest winning streak any Seminole coach has enjoyed since 1972 a twogame skein. Florida State, after dropping its first three games, has beaten Kansas State and Boston College.

Arch-rival Florida is up next and Bowden has closed all Seminole practices to the public. "I know what this game means to Florida State, and I want our players devoting all of their concentration to the game," he said Monday. The game Saturday night in Tallahassee is a sellout. Coach Bill Battle said Monday that Tennessee is making good progress after stumbling in the early going. "We lost one we had a chance of winning and won one we had a chance of losing," he said.

"We could be 5-0 at this time or 2-3." Tennessee actually is 3-2 and meets Alabama at Knoxville Saturday in a nationally-televised contest. Bear Bryant complained about the number of injuries at Alabama's practice Monday. "We're really crippled now," he said. Mississippi State's Bob Tyler had a similar problem. He said 23 players were sidelined with injuries as the Bulldogs began preparations for Memphis State.
