18 DAILY WORLD Opalouicii, WJ Jut 1, 1977 And By AAcaiimoufh Bass: Thay Bite People, Too URBANA, 111. (UPI) -Dr. William Childers views the new hybrid bass he has developed as an exercise in aquatic genetics, but anglers and swimmers may see them as farm-pond versions of "Jaws." The hybrid bass are so aggressive they have been known to jump into the air to bite people. And dogs. Childers calls them "meanmouths." Childers and Paul Beaty, a graduate student using the project for a doctoral dissertation, developed the fish by artificially crossing largemouth bass with smallmouth bass.

The goal was to find out whether the new fish might be a valuable addition to farm ponds and lakes. Early results are promising, Childers said. The fish grow faster than either largemouths or smallmouths, reach sexual maturity faster and are "a hard-biting fish," Childers said. "Fishermen who've caught them go out of their way to remark how well they fight," he said. Unfortunately, "they behave differently than either parent species in other ways, too.

They show little fear of man or other predators. He cited the case of a woman who was attacked while swimming in the "meanmouth" pond. The fish jumped out of the water to strike her. Since other swimmers were only nipped, he theorized the fish may have been excited by the woman's brightly colored swim suit. Childers' dog also got into a scrap with the fish.

The fish swam around the edge with largemouths and smallmouths, permanently altering those species. That testing period will take at least three years. of the pond, following the dog, and the dog jumped into the edge of the water. The fish humped out of the water, nipping at the dog and dodging the dog's return bites. Childers said he and Beaty aren't about to turn the fish loose until they're sure they won't interbreed 1v Memorial To Vietnam Dead Finished Several years ago the Westphalls started construction on a Vietnam Veterans Memorial Chapel on a picturesque hill overlooking the Angel Fire Valley.

(UPI) Saying he was afraid it might be the subject of a theft raid by drug dealers, District Attorney Francis Dugas ordered the burning of six tons of marijuana. Dugas and Lafourche Parish Sheriff Duffy Breaux supervised the burning Tuesday. The marijuana, seized in a drug arrest April 23, was dropped into a pit, doused with diesel fuel and ignited. Dugas said keeping the marijuana as evidence was risky because other places where confiscated drugs have been stored have been raided and the drugs stolen. Samples were taken from each bale of marijuana for use in the trials of two men charged with possession with intent to distribute, Dugas said.

William Tighe, 30, of St. Louis Park, Minn, and Kenneth Kercher, 22, of Tucson, were arrested April 23 when they tried to run a roadblock at a fire with a truck carrying the drug, Breaux said. They are scheduled for arriagnment June 27. The suspects are believed to have brought the drugs into Louisiana on a sailboat from a larger ship in the Gulf of Mexico. It came from Colombia, officials said.
