A2 THURSDAY, MAY 3, 2001 THE SALINA JOURNAL^ Tornado / Pressure causes odd damage FROM PAGE A1 Eagleman said changes in atmospheric pressure during tornadoes often causes odd damage. "Sometimes, it's enough to pop a wall out of a house, or all the walls," Eagleman said. "It's not the wind knocking them down. "It can also cause the roof to pop up if there is higher pressure inside the house. It explodes upward and outward." Eagleman said when he looked at trees stripped of their bark by tornadoes, he initially thought the bark was chipped off by flying debris. But if that were the case, the bark would be gone from only one side of the tree. Now, he believes the bark explodes from trees because of the piressure. Contrary to myth, opening windows won't ease that pressure in buildings, something Eagleman and other researchers proved through testing they did in a wind tunnel at the university He's heard reports of people caught outside during tornadoes having mud or grass embedded in their skin. That, he said, is caused by exposure to extremely high wind. "It's the same phenomenon as a wheat straw being embedded into a telephone pole," Eagleman said. "It becomes like a bullet." Through his simulations and througli studying damage patterns, Eagleman said, he Salina Journal Comiecliiig communities with Information (USPS 478-060) Published seven days a week, 365 days a year at 333 S. Your Pamily learned there are a couple of things people can do to help lessen the damage to their homes in tornadoes. First, Eagleman said, he learned that a building is weakest at the points where walls attach to the roof and to the foundation. If the walls are bolted to the foundation, and if more nails are used to hold the roof to the building, the building is better able to withstand higher wind. The pitch of the roof also makes a difference. Eagleman said steeper roofs have better pressure distribution and can better withstand high wind, "We did damage surveys, and we could see that in the field," Eaglemati said, "And it was verified in the wind tunnel." Orientation of a building also makes a difference. Eagleman said a building that doesn't have a steeply pitched roof can better withstand high wind if the low side is turned to the southwest. Eagleman hopes some day that through research, scientists can learn how to weaken tornadoes before they touch down. "The latest development has been Doppler radar, which enables meteorologists to see circulation within thunderstorms," he said. "The next step would be a higher-resolution Doppler that could actually see the tornado. That would certainly be an improvement."
