It's triple option and bombs away down here in Dixie these days with the top three teams in the SEC averaging close to 40 points per game and three others averaging better than 30. It was an exciting battle that went down to the wire. Lawtell opened a 16-12 in the first quarter and appeared to be headed for a runaway when the lead was boosted to 39-28 at the half.

But then the team ran into foul trouble and the visiting team started popping the bucket. Palmetto outscored the team 19-11 in the third stanza and trailed only 50-47. The final quarter saw the Lawtell lead go up to five and down to one and back up again. The victory was taken in the final seconds of the game. Although both teams are in District 11-B it was not a district contest.

The teams are in different portions of the league. Richard Hits 19 The winning Lawtell team was paced by Ellis Richard, a 5-6 senior guard who tallied 19 points and appears to be a strong all-district candidate. Two other members hit for 15 points: Alvin Comeaux, a 5-11 senior forward, and Hayward Batiste, a 6-2 forward. Ernest Bihm, although he had to sit out much of the second half because of foul problems, pumped in eight while Ted Mercantel hit for six. Bihm Stars On the other side of the scoresheet was Palmetto's Steve Bihm.

The sophomore hit for 25 points and established himself as a strong all-league candidate. The 6-1 jumper was at his best under the basket. Don Johnson chipped in 13 and Waurice Isles had 11. Wimberley, in his second year as head coach at Lawtell, commented, "The offense looked pretty fair in the game but the defense needs some work." The coach went on to add that he was glad it was a close game because he had an opportunity to see his players under pressure. "It was a true test," he evaluated.

Lawtell, although having played just one contest, has been given the nod as one of the better teams that will be competing in the Leonville Invitational Tournament starting this Thursday. Lawtell is meeting Henry in a 7 p.m. game to open the tourney. Behind a 20-point effort by Mary Alice Guillory, the Lawtell girls took a 41-31 decision from Palmetto. The winners took a 9-3 lead in the first period and made it 25-8 at the half to ice the win.

"Chattanooga appears very capable of giving us a lot of trouble both ways," Lambright said after reviewing scouting reports. "They definitely are as quick defensively, and possibly quicker, than anybody we have yet faced. Offensively, they have a versatile attack headed by an exceptional quarterback (Richard Manning) i an excellent tailback (Robert Smith) handling much of the running." The Moccasins are currently 3-2 for the season, having lost only to the University of Tennessee (31-0) and unbeaten East Tennessee State (17-13). Victories have been registered against Wofford (28-23), Middle Tennessee (7-3) and Northeast State (12-7).

Pine Prairie In Victory Behind West PINE PRAIRIE Paced by all-district center Howard West, Pine Prairie gained a 65-48 victory over Georgetown Tuesday night at home. The 6-0 West, who has been an all-league choice for the past two years, pumped in 15 points in leading the team to its third victory in four outings. Georgetown, which is located approximately 20 miles north of Alexandria, held the home team to a 13-13 tie in the first period and the score was still knotted at the half 22-22. Then in the third period the home team came alive with 19 points and gained a 41-32 margin. A 23-16 margin in the final period put the game away.

Earl Fon-tenot aided the home cause with 10 points as did Billy West. Nine points were contributed by John Crosby and Quirk Vidrine. Charles Hodges paced the winners with 14 markers. The District 10-B team, coached by Leslie Gaudet, will be traveling to Eunice Saturday afternoon to engage Acadia Baptist Academy in the school's Homecoming basketball game.
