C4 THURSDAY, OCTOBER 24, 1996 CLASSIFIED THE SALINA JOURNAL T ASTRONOMY New planet found outside solar system Planet orbits smaller of twin stars in the constellation Cygnus By The Associated Press TUCSON, Ariz. — A new planet that breaks all the rules about how and where planets form has been found in orbit of a twin star about 70 light years from Earth in a constellation commonly known as the Northern Cross. The new planet has a roller- coaster like orbit that swoops down close to its central star and then swings far out into frigid fringes, following a strange egg-shaped orbit that is unlike any other known planet. "We don't understand how it could have formed in such an orbit," said William Cochran, head of University of Texas team that discovered the planet at the same time that a group from San Francisco State found it independently. The researchers presented papers on the new planet Wednesday at a national meeting of the American Astronomical Society's planetary division. The new planet is the latest in a series of bodies found in orbit of stars outside of the solar system. Cochran said the planet orbits the smaller of twin stars in the constellation Cygnus, a prominent stellar grouping known as the Northern Cross. "Of all the stars you might see in the sky, Cygni B is the most similar to our sun," said Cochran. It has the same mass and temperature as the sun, but the nearby twin star of Cygni B creates an entirely different type of environment. Every 250,000 years, Cygni A and B pass within 65 billion miles of each other, a grazing passage by stellar standards. It is unlikely that life exists on the new planet, said Cochran, because it probably is more like the gaseous planets, such as Jupiter or Saturn, than the rocky planets such as Earth or Mars. V CALIFORNIA FIRES Firebreaks starting to contain blazes Fires have already destroyed more than 100 California houses By The Associated Press MALIBU, Calif. — The dry, blustery Santa Ana wind that turned brush fires into blowtorches eased Wednesday, giving firefighters an edge as they tried to contain the flames that destroyed more than 100 houses. Fires scattered across California had charred about 37,000 acres. Blazes that engulfed neighborhoods of Malibu, Carlsbad and Lemon Heights were still out of control but were being gradually contained by firebreaks. "I was so scared, I realized we were ants shooting marbles at these things," said Nicholas Horvatich, crying as he described the battle that saved his neighborhood. "The ground fire crew put up a wall of water that I didn't think was humanly possible," Horvatich said. "And the airlift bombed the hell out of it like a war zone." President Clinton issued an emergency declaration for San Diego, Los Angeles and Orange counties, where the firestorms had chased thousands from their homes. The action allows federal funding for a variety of assistance programs. "Today, federal fire fighters have joined with state and local forces to form a human fire wall from Malibu to the Mexican border," said Clinton, who also dispatched James Lee Witt, director of the Federal Emergency Management Agency, to survey the damage. Airplanes and helicopters dashed through the dry canyons of Los Angeles and San Diego counties for a third day, drenching hot spots and laying down fire retardant. Wisps of smoke rose from the gray flanks of the Santa Monica Mountains, replacing plumes that darkened the sky the two previous days. "The winds have died down and it's looking good for us. The aircraft are up and they are knocking out all the hot spots they still have," said Cesar Alvarez of the Los Angeles County Fire Department. The seasonal winds driving the flames reached 71 mph on Monday, but by Wednesday gusts were down to 15 to 25 mph and humidity in the Malibu area was 48 percent, up from an arid 5 percent on Monday. "Weather conditions right now are very good for fighting the fire on the ground and in the air," said Capt. Steve Valenzuela, a spokesman for the Los Angeles County Fire Department. There was good reason to work fast: forecasters predicted new winds from a cold front as early as Thursday afternoon and possible return of the volatile Santa Ana winds from the north on Saturday. One firefighter was in critical but stable condition Wednesday with burns over 70 percent of his body. He was among six crew members, whose truck was engulfed by flame near Malibu on Tuesday. Two of his coworkers had been released from hospitals. Hardest hit was Carlsbad in northern San Diego County, where 8,600 acres burned and 98 homes were destroyed. It was 68 percent contained.
