THE SALINA JOURNAL GREAT PLAINS THURSDAY, OCTOBER 24,_19g6_A3 V MISSIONARIES Salinans to help build church in El Salvador Emmanuel Foursquare members to be in San Salvador for 10 days By GORDON D. FIEDLER JR. The Salina Journal Sixteen men of the Emmanuel Foursquare Gospel Church, 1325 E. Cloud, including the church's three pastors, are polishing their rudimentary Spanish in preparation for a 10-day mission work trip to San Salvador later this week. The men volunteered to help build a new church in the Central American capital of El Salvador, where the Foursquare denomination is growing. The church will be of concrete block. One wall is already up, and the Salina crew will complete as much of the structure as possible in the two weeks. Members of the contingent are varied in age and in bricklaying experience, said Pastor Loren Houltberg. "We'll have some tea carriers," Houltberg said. This is the first trip of its kind for the local church. Each summer for the past six years the church has sent a delegation of youth members on ministry- oriented mission trips to Mexico. Their experiences whetted the appetites of the adults, so earlier this year the church searched for a suitable adult program. With help from its international office, the local congregation was matched with the San Salvador project. In July, Emmanuel invited its missionaries in El Salvador, Tom and Katie Valdez, to discuss the new church. The architectural plans arrived after that, but it took a while to read them. "They were in Spanish," Houltberg said. While in the capital city the workers will stay at a house near the job site, which is in an inner- city neighborhood of residents of mixed economic levels. "We really don't know what to expect," Houltberg said. Always The Best Quality & Selection i W.
