4 WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 23, 1996 APPLAUSE THE SALINA JOURNAL HOLLYWOOD GLITTERATI By ROGER ANDERSON Scripps Howard News Sendee CASTING NOTES: The show business industry is all aflutter with the knowledge that producer Joel Silver has succeeded in getting Mel Gibson and Julia Roberts to appear tpgether in a movie titled "The Conspiracy," now lensing in NYC. One can't help wondering, though, if the deal will be worth Julia's while in terms of moolah. "She's very well-compensated," Joel assures an inquiring reporter from USA Today. "Mel's happy, Dick's happy, the studio is happy." Explanatory note: The "Dick" to whom Joel refers would be Richard Donner, who's directing the pic. Hold on, though, Joel isn't finished. "Can you smell the money?" Excuse us? IT'S TOO LATE TO STOP NOW: By more or less the same token, a New York Post columnist says that a certain woman of considerable public notoriety has been tapped to portray a recurring character on "The Drew Carey Show." That woman's name is: (a) Drew Barrymore. (b) Alex Kingston. (c) Tammy Faye Bakker. The answer, once again, is (c). And just who in the world is this Alex Kingston, anyway? ***************************** MORE Another burning entertainment issue these days is the matter of who shall be chosen to replace Greg Kinnear as host of NBC's "Later" now that Greg has opted to go off and become a gigantic movie star. One of the People magazine people prevails on an inside but anonymous source to say that the web is "very interested in finding an ethnic voice or a woman" to fill the slot. Oy. ***************************** SAGA CONTINUES: Oliver Stone wants to make a movie about Alexander the Great. To portray that doughty imperial warrior, he's hoping — this is according to what we see in the New York Daily News — to nail down the services of what well-known male thespian? (a) Jason Alexander. (b) Alex Kingston. (c) Sean Perm. The answer is (c). In fact, Michael says the high quality of Val's performance "just makes me so .pleased, just as it does with my leading ladies when they come out well." And Val didn't use up all the smelling salts, we bet. John Wood &,Assoc. Scott Tor res for Sheriff Reported Crime in Ottawa County is Increasing, yet The Sheriffs Department's Arrest Rate is Decreasing The Sheriffs Department is receiving more calls from Ottawa County Citizens reporting crime, but the Sheriffs Department's arrest rate is low. With a growing local population, our Sheriffs Department must improve and simply perform its job! Our Sheriffs Department is just not giving us what we pay for. Reported crimes are often not investigated and often Sheriffs Deputies do not even respond to calls. They are simply ignored. When crimes are investigated, the Sheriffs Department routinely does not . follow proper investigative procedures resulting in criminals going free. The Sheriff just does not set a . good example for his Deputies and he does not provide them with proper leadership. The overall performance of the Ottawa County Sheriffs Department is poor! The conviction rate is low due to the Sheriffs Department's poor investigative and evidence collection practices, poor work habits, and a simple lack order and discipline. The Sheriff and his Deputies are given raises regardless of how well they perform their jobs so they do the minimum to get byl When we elected Mr. Kenneth White as Sheriff, he promised to do a good job. He has not kept his.promise. He has let his Deputies become arrogant and lazy. That's not the behavior we need or want. Our county is small but we are growing. We need a Sheriff who is prepared for our growth. Scott Torres will bring Ottawa County the Sheriffs Department our Citizens deserve and will be proud of. It will be a hard working and community oriented professional department that is responsible to the Citizens of Ottawa County. He will establish proper standards, policies and procedures, and he will restore integrity to the Ottawa County Sheriffs Department. We need a change - a Sheriffs Department that Does its Job. Scott Torres will bring us that Change! Political advertisement paid for by the Committee to elect Scott Torres, Sheriff.
