YOIIK, December the subject: "What shall we do with the Mormons?" the World says: If it were clear that by making a national matter of the attempt to crush out polygamy we should succeed in crushing it out, it would still be the part of wise men well to weigh the cost against the profit of such an undertaking before entering upon it; and, when this has been done, it will still remain to be ascertained whether bv driving the Mormons out of Utah we sfiall put an end to the polygamy of the Mormons, which, as all recent travelers testify, has for some years past been dying out of itself, or give the institution new lease of life in some other region and under another name.

A Mix.

The foreman of a Montreal paper is in trouble. In making up his forms lie mixed an article on Catholic advances in Africa with recipe for making tomato catsup, and has been dodging the editorial shotgun ever since. As published, the article reads: "The Roman Catholics claim to be making material advances in Africa, particularly in Algeria, where they have 185,000 adherents and a missionary society for Central Africa. During the past three years they have obtained a firm footing iu the interior of the continent, and have sent forth several missionaries into the equatorial regions. They are most accustomed to begin their work by buying heathen children and educating them.

The easiest and best way to prepare them is to first wipe them with a clean towel; then place them in dripping pans and hake them till they arc tender. You will then have no difficulty iu rubbing them through a sieve, and will save them by not being obliged to cut them in slices and cook for several hours." Among the aches which the unprecedented career of Hostetter's Stomach Bitters has proved to be curable arc those experienced by the rheumatic.

Testimony of the most convincing character establishes the fact that the atrocious disease, even after resisting the most potent remedies of the pharmacopoeia, hns succumbed to the action of this beneficent blood depureut. Add to this fact the important one that it is safe, audits superiority is very manifest. Unfortunately safety cannot be predicated of the ordinary drugs used to overcome rheumatism, among which are several violent poisons, and some of them, as in the case of arsenic, have a tendency to aggregate in the system, and to cause death at some unlocked for moment. A slight over dose of the chief remedy, cholchicum. causes spasms of the heart and death.

Ihe Bitters, besides being a depurent, remedies dyspepsia, consumption, liver complaint and general debility. The Culture of Beauty. Although Nature alone can produce perfect beauty, Art may in a great measure supply Nature's deficiencies. CHICAGO, December JVcioa' special from Washington says: Blaine was asked to-day -which particular one of the many rumors about his movements and intentions were true.

"I do nol want to be interviewed," he said, "but I am willing to say, if it is of any intcreM, that there arc many things I do nol intend to do. I have no intention whatever of moving to New York, as you have seen asserted, to take charge of the interest of any department of the M. K. T. Railroad.

It is strange tbnt such statements should be imagined, as no proposition of such a natnre has been remotely suggested to me. I don't intend to remove to New York, cither, for any reason. I shall remain in Washington, and give my attention to a number of long- neglected private enterprises. My principal business will be in connection with a rail road in which I have embarked capital millions, as I see it stated, but enough to make it an object, for me to look after." "Is i Ihe railroad KlkniH is connected withv" "Yes, Mr. Elkins, Senator Davis, of Wfsl Virgidia, and a number of other gentlemen, whose names have been already mentioned.

The property is a first-rate one, and its development wid occupy all my spare time." "You have been credited with designing a southern tour." "However much," replied Mr. Blaine, "I may be disposed to accept the very cordial invitations I have had to go I shall probably be obliged to decline them nil. I have been necessarily a pretty busy man for tlic past twelve months, and shall now seek either to avoid excitement or unnecessary activity." "When will your new house be finished? "I don't know; we don't intend lo occupy it, however, i next fall or winter. "Your health is good, is it not?" "Yes; much better than nt the beginning of the year." Lincoln Not Blind. New York special says: The published statement that Mrs.

Siwclni to the Cincinnati Enquirer. WASHINGTON, Dec, 13. It is settled among the Stalwart leaders that Grant will never again permit his name to lie presented before a nominating convention. Thus, i him out of the way, the aim of the Stalwarts will be to have Chester A. Arthur succeed himself.

Arthur, while he does not care for Presidential honors, is desirous of so administering the remainder of the term for which General Garlicld was elected that it can be recorded of at least one Vice President that he was not a failure. Hence a. rcnomination and election to the Presidential office will be a declaration, in effect, that he was not a failure. It can be thus set down--not upon mere assumption, but. as a fact--that President A desires a second term, and will use with wise discretion the resources of the estate which a terrible tragedy placed in his hands to bring it about; and he will have no nninironism from any qmirter among the leaders of the Stalwart wing.

Every move made on the political checker-board will be in.tbe interest of his candidacy. The first has already been made in the election of .1. Warren Keifer to the Speakership. Kcifer has joined hands with the Stalwarts, and will so organize the Committees of the House in a way to keep uppermost the fact that Arthur is a candidate. Otherwise he would never have been made the Speaker.

The race for 1881 is made up. will be Arthur versus Blaine. Arthur's chance lies in the success of his administration, and keeping on good terms with both factions. This he may try to do; he will -fail, however, for the Stalwarts will nol be satisfied unless he unmistakably makes his bed with them. Tlicv would IKS "the first to knife him should he "disappoint their expectations.

Kven now there is the muttering of the storm because he has not doled out the at his disposal with greater lilicrality. For awhile Die President may sail peacefully between the two turbulent streams, but in the end he will be forced to tekc a decided stand, OT IKS abandoned by the very men who now proclaim )m most excellent George Washington was first in the hearts of his countrymen. So is Simon Levine, and he is also first in the field with new cloth and new fashions for gentlemen.
