THE SUNDAY CONSTITUTION, October 9, 1977 3C Hipp, Nebraska Tumble Wildcats MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) I. M. Hipp bolted 82 and 66 yards for touchdowns Saturday and rushed for more than 200 yards for the second straight game, leading ninth-ranked Nebraska to a 26-9 victory over Kansas State in their Big Eight football opener. The Cornhuskers, who posted their fourth straight victory after a loss to Washington State needed both of Hipp's long dashes to conquer the stubborn Wildcats.

Kansas State wasn't out of it until the final minute, when Nebraska scored an easy field goal after intercepting a pass and an unneeded touchdown after getitng the ball at mid-field. The Wildcats, who haven't won a Big Eight game since 1974, made it tough for Nebraska before bowing for the 15th straight time in conference play. They scored on a 13-yard pass from reserve quarterback Dan Manucci to Paul Coffman with just under 12 minutes left, cutting Nebraska's lead to 179. The Cats missed on a two-point conversion when Manucci couldn't get into the end zone on a run. Kansas State got the ball right back, but Larry Valasek intercepted a Manucci pass and returned it 25 yards to the K-State 25.

That set up the clinching 21-yard clinching field goal by Billy Todd, Nebraska also scored again with 21 seconds left on Kenny Brown's 26-yard run. Hipp uncorked his cross-country touchdown runs in the second and third quarters. Both times, he turned right end through a wide path cleared by his blockers, outran the K-State linebackers and had only to follow the GAME IN FIGURES Kanios SI. Hipp, who last week set -a Nebraska single-game rushing record with 254 yards on 26 carries in the Huskers' 3113 victory over Indiana, finished with 207 on 23 tries Saturday.

He has 621 yards on 76 carries in Nebraska's first five games. His 82-yard run in the third period was the longest for a Nebraska back since John Edwards set a school record with an 84-yard jaunt against Oregon State in 1954. Kansas State took a 3-0 lead in the first quarter when Kris Thompson booted a 51-yard field goal. Thai followed the recovery of a bad Nebraska pitchout by Sam Owen of the Wildcats on the Husker 23. Hipp wiped out the advantage on the first play of the second quarter with his 66-yard strike, putting Nebrasla in front for good.

Todd booted a 26-yard field goal midway throuh the second quarter for a 10-3 Nebraska lead at halftime. Campbell, who spend most of last season sidelined with injuries, was the driving force for the Longhorns as he gouged out 124 tough yards on 23 carries against the hard tackling Sooner defense.

Texas went into the game averaging 61 points, and as the nation's number one offensive team, but could not produce a first down until early in the second quarter with McEacheran at the helm. McBath suffered an ankle injury and was on crutches at game's end and Aune had a leg injury. The Sooners got an early lead when Dave Hudgens intercepted Campbell's halfback pass as the Longhorn 13-yard line However, Oklahoma returned the favor as Kenny King fumbled and Johnson pounced on the ball at the Texas 18. The Longhorns defense. No.

Switzer decided to go for it, but Oklahoma was penalized for delay of game and the Sooners settled for Von Schamann's 33-yard field goal to make it 10-6. After Texas' goal line stand late in the fourth quarter, Erxleben uncorked a 69-yard mint to put Oklahoma in a hole and the Sooners' eight-game winning streak ended with Texas owning the ball at ohe Oklahoma 35-yard line. McEarchen was such a mystery man that he was not even listed in the Texas media guide.

He completed four of eight passes for 57 yards and kept the Sooners off balance with his perfectly timed pitches to Campbell running out of the Veer and I formations. Oklahoma made only six first downs against the Longhorns who are now 4-0 for the season. Oklahoma, now 4-1, could gain only 198 yards rushing in 58 tries against the rawhide tough Longhorn defense. It was the first time since 1975 that Oklahoma had played a game without scoring a touchdown. The Sooners failed to score a touchdown against Kansas when they lost 23-3.

Oklahoma, a fumble-prone team in its previous four games, fumbled only twice and had no interceptions, but the Longhorns rose to the occasion in the clutch. Freshman David Overstreet was the Sooners' leading rusher with 87-yards on 17 carries while King had 51 yards on 14 tries. Texas now leads the series 43-26-3. Captures Crown In Match Play Tourney VIRGINIA WATER, England (AP) Ray Floyd scoffed at the suggestion an anonymous threat against his safety could have affected his play in a 5 and 3 loss to Australian Graham Marsh in 36-hole final of the World Match Play Golf Championship. "It really didn't bother me," the bulky Floyd said after a half-dozen alert, uniformed police had followed him through driving rain for two wearying trips over the par 73 "Burma Road" course at the Wentworth Golf Club. "Naturally enough, it upset my wife quite badly," said Floyd, who missed a chance at his first non-American title. "But I think a situation like this is not worthy of exposure.

"It was just someone looking for publicity. It had nothing to do with the way I played." The threat, of an unspecified nature, came by an anonymous telephone call while Floyd was beating Severiano Ballesteros of Spain 2 and 1 in Friday's semifinals of Europe's golf richest event. Saturday, with the uniforms in evidence and an unknown number of off- duty police serving as marshals, Floyd never led against the unrelenting Marsh, unspectacular but rock-steady. "He was very persistent," said Floyd, a former winner of both the Masters and PGA and holder of two current U.S. titles.

"He was down the middle and on the green. When he needed a putt, he made it. Marsh, 33, a rookie on the American tour but the holder of more than two dozen international titles, claimed $52,500 from the total purse of $225,000. Floyd won $31,500. Ballesteros collected $21,000 after defeating an uninspired Hale Irwin 3 and 2 in the 36-hole match for third place.

Irwin won $15,750 after watching in amazement as Ballesteros one-putted" 13 times in 34 holes, including a 90- footer for birdie on the third hole of the afternoon round. "He made absolutely everything he looked at," said Irwin, who now has finished first, first, second and fourth in four consecutive appearances in this international classic that, this year, was expanded from eight to 16 players. Marsh, who the Heritage Classic and more than $100,000 this year in his first year on the American tour, "This was one of my great ambitions. Outside of the (British) Open, this is the most important tournament in this country." He took a one-up lead with a 20-foot eagle putt on the fourth hole of the morning round, went two-up when Floyd three-putted the next hole and really wasn't threatened again. Marsh, who scored eight bidies and an eagle for the day, had a three-up lead when they took a lunch break after 18 holes, got it to five with birdies on the fourth and seventh holes of the afternoon round and simply brought it home among the gallery's gaily-striped umbrellas that afforded that the only spot of color on a gray and dismal day.

Bears Fall To Cougars; Bruins Lose PULLMAN, Wash. (AP) Brilliant defensive play by Washington State's George Yarno, John Troppman. Ken Greene and Spud Harris complemented Jack Thompson's passing Saturday as the Cougars upset 14th-ranked California 17-10 Saturday in Pacific-8 college football. Thompson orchestrated two touchdown drives for an early lead, but the defense was tested to the limit by- Golden Bears' reserve quarterback Gary Graumann. Graumann fired a 22-yard touchdown pass to Floyd Eddings with 1:09 remaining in the game to pull the Bears within a touchdown.

Cal's onside kick failed, but the previously undefeated Bears held the Cougars on downs. A WSU punt left Cal on their own 40 with 53 seconds to play. Graumann hit on three completions West Roundup to chew up 50 yards of turf and give Bears a first down on WSU's 10. But the curtain came down on Cal when Yarno sacked Graumann with nine seconds remaining. WSU built a 17-0 lead on a 44-yard field goal by Paul Watson and touchdown runs of one and five yards by Thompson.

Defense dominated the first a with Thompson and Cal starting quarterback Charlie Young each being intercepted once. Harris set up the Cougars' first touchdown when he threw Young for a 15-yard loss which forced Cal to punt from its own 26. Thompson hit flanker Brian Kelly with passes of 14 and 16 yards to set up his score, establishing WSU career passing record on the way. Stanford 32, UCLA 28 STANFORD, Calif. (AP) James Lofton caught a 27-yard touchdown pass from Steve Oils with 37 seconds left to give Stanford a 32-28 victory over UCLA in a Pacific-8 football game Saturday.

Lofton, a senior wide receiver, had set up the winning score seconds earlier when he caught a 39-yard bomb from Dils, leaping high in the air to steal the ball from two UCLA defenders. Dils, a junior who started in place of injured Guy Benjamin, completed 24 of 37 passes for 287 yards, but most of the heroics belonged to little Darrin Nelson. Nelson, a freshman, gained 187 yards in 22 carries and scored on touchdown runs of 31 and four yards. He became the first freshman in Stanford's history to surpass 100 yards rushing in a game. UCLA had trouble getting started and didn't gain a first down until early in the second quarter.

By then, the Bruins trailed 16-0. UCLA kept the game close on individual effort, including a 75-yard run Theotis Brown and a 78-yard romp by Freeman McNeil. Oregon State 24, BYU 19 CORVALLIS, Ore. (AP) Oregon State defenders intercepted three i ford Nielsen passes and returned twoof them for touchdowns Saturday as the Beavers knocked off 13th-ranked Brigham Young 24-19 in a non- conference football game. Nielsen, college football's leading passer, had not thrown an interception going iaveragc contest.

The previously unbeaten Cougars, who had averaged nearly 53 points a game, jumped to a 19-0 lead on Nielsen's three touchdown passes, the last one coming 17 seconds into the second half. But that was it for the defending Western Athletic Conference co- champions. Oregon State, now 2-3, took the lead two minutes into the final quarter when linebacker Gene Dales picked off a Nielsen pass at the Beaver 21-yard line and ran untouched 79 yards for the score. Moments earlier, the Beavers had sliced the BYU lead to 19-14 when, on a nearly identical play, linebacker Kent Howe stepped in front of the Cougars' Todd Christensen to pick off Nielsen's pass and return it 32 yards for the score. STIFEL, NICOLAUS WJh Crf Mf. Inrtw, Okk. 71SOI PHONE 353-5500 COMPANY INCORPORATED Iowa State Uses Rugged Defense To Help Overpower Missouri, 7-0 AMES, Iowa (AP) A tight-fisted Iowa State defense forced Missouri to punt from their own two in the fourth quarter to set up a 28-yard scoring romp by Dexter Green as the Cyclones defeated the Tigers 7-0 in Big Eight Conference football Saturday. Green, the seventh-leading rusher in the nation with a 10.5 yard per carry- average, was held to 12 yards in nine carries in the first half. Each team got within field goal range the first half, but winds gusting to 38 miles per hour put the kickers off their marks.

Missouri had another chance in the third quarter and failed. The game was the conference opener for both teams. Sill Hag Football All four Fort Sill flag football games were won by shutouts Saturday. The Redskins blanked the (Jolts, 30-0; the Oilers downed the Cowboys. 6-0; the Vikings blanked the Redskins, 36-0, and the Steelers downed the Dolphins 24-0.

The Iowa State touchdown was set up in part by a drive that included 11 plays and a penalty for each team which put the Cyclones in a punting situation on their own 48. ISU punter Rick Blabolil booted the ball 51 yards and his team mates downed it on the Missouri two. In the four play series, the Tigers made it out to the four, but the Cyclone defense put the brakes on quarterback Phil Bradley for a two-yard third-down loss. The end-zone punt went out to the 28 with 9:41 left in the game. Cyclone quarterback Terry Rubley decided to ignore Green's running problems and Green went in standing up.

The victory boosted ISU to 4-1 and dropped Missouri to 1-4. The Cyclones face Nebraska next Saturday at Lincoln while Missouri will play Oklahoma at Columbia in conference games. The Cyclone defense held Missouri to 79 yards rushing and 87 passing. "Our defense was tremendous all day," said ISU Coach Earle Bruce. "I don't think we've played a football team this good offensively and even though our defense did well against Iowa, this was a better effort." Missouri allowed 163 yards rushing and 138 passing.

"It was a very disappointing game." reacted Tiger Coach Al Onofrio. "I'm not taking anything away from Dexter Green's run, but I think it was unfortunate that they scored like added Onofrio after crediting his own defense with a good rating overall for the game.
