Tuesday, July 4,1972 News I Summary The World FISCHER CHECKS IN U.S. grand master Bobby Fischer, finally wooed to the board by a British banker's offer to double the prize money, arrived in Iceland Tuesday hours before the opening match in his chess showdown with world champion Boris Spassky. Fischer arrived aboard an Icelandic Airline flight from New York delayed more than one hour for him. PROTESTANTS CLAIM WIN The British army prevented Protestant militants from barricading one of their Belfast strongholds Monday night, but the Protestants claimed a "great victory." After a four-hour confrontation between 8,000 masked men of the Ulster Defense "Association and 600 armed troops, the UDA -the Protestants' answer to the Roman Catholics' Irish Army abandoned their plans to throw a steel barricade across Ainsworth Avenue in West Belfast. The Nation ELLSBERG TO GO TO TRIAL Defense efforts to prevent the trial of Daniel Ellsberg and Anthony Russo in the Pentagon Papers case have failed and the way is clear for proceedings to begin next Monday.

U.S. District Court Judge William M. Byrne Jr. of Los Angeles Monday denied the defendants' request to dismiss espionage, conspiracy and theft charges on grounds that the government singled out Ellsberg and Russo because of their antiwar views. SETTLEMENT NOT LIKELY An angry statement by the International Longshoremen's and Warehousemen's Union, accusing the Hawaii stevedoring industry of bad faith, dimmed the possibility Tuesday of an early settlement of the smoldering island dock dispute.

No negotiations were scheduled Tuesday, but a joint session was tentatively set for Wednesday afternoon, ternoon. TRUMAN CHEERFUL Former President Harry Truman, described as "happy and cheerful," spent Independence Day in a seventh floor hospital room where he is undergoing tests to diagnose his intestinal problems. The latest recall campaign was announced Monday by General Motors which said it wanted to inspect some 500,000 subcompact Vegas nearly every one built in the 1971 and 1972 model years for a defective axle shaft that could cause rear brake failure and the axle itself to fall off. BROTHERS KILLED Two brothers were found killed by shotgun blasts Monday afternoon on a farm southwest of Mineral Wells. Palo Pinto County Sheriff Bill Harris said Elmer Pruitt, 62, clad only in his un- dershorts, was found in the bedroom of his farm house. The body of his brother, Delma Pruitt, 60, of Hobbs, N.M., was found in the backyard about 20 yards from the house. RANCHER SCOFFS AT CHARGES A prominent rancher-banker charged in Eagle Pass in connection with an alleged scheme to ship munitions to Cuba in a government overthrow says the allegations are "ridiculous." Richmond Harper, one of nine men charged in the alleged plot, is a rancher and a director of the Frontier State Bank. He was charged Saturday night with conspiring to ship the arms and explosives to Mexico from where, the government claims, they were to be forwarded to Cuba as tools in a plot to upset the Fidel Castro administration.

PETITION CIRCULATED A petition drive for a November vote to up the Houston City Council from eight to 12 members, seven of them elected by districts, was announced Monday by the Greater Houston Civic Council, All eight members of the council now are elected at large by a citywide vote. The council has declined several times to put the proposed change to a vote. NOW HITS NEWSPAPER The Houston chapter of the National Organization of Women stepped up its drive against the Houston Chronicle Monday by filing sex discrimination allegations against 149 of the newspaper's classified advertisers. The women's liberation group has asked the Chronicle to end the practice of allowing advertisers to run classified advertisements under "male help wanted" and "female help wanted" designations.
