Ann Ragsdale and Grace Jett: Republicans, 40 Persons Killed in Earthquake TEHRAN (AP) At least 40 villagers were killed and more than 70 injured today when a series of strong earthquakes shook an area of aboul 20,000 square miles near the Soviet border, first reports from the region said. There was heavy damage to bridges and telephone lines, and the final toll will not be known for some time.

But the Red Lion and Sun, Iran's equivalent of the Red Cross, said the region is thinly populated and a report that several thousand were killed was "inaccurate and unreliable." Margarel Osbourn, Cairo, were supper guests Saturday of Mr. and Mrs. George William Burton. Other guests were Mr. and Mrs.

J. Melvin Green and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Lester Prewitt and son and Mr. and Mrs.

R. C. McMahan. The McMahans were overnight guests. Miss Barbara Shores, Kansas City, spent Saturday night and Sunday with her parents, Mr.
