D4 TUESDAY, MAY 1, 2001 THE SALINA JOURNAL Horoscopes By Joyce Jillson Creators Syndicate Inc. • ARIES (March 21-April 19). It's a peak-popularity day. A special individual will declare his or her love for you. Be very gracious if you cannot return it. People will listen to you with interest, so be sure to think about what you are trying to say and say it. • TAURUS (April 20-May 20). You'll get plenty of attention for your accomplishments, but a special person loves you whether you win or lose. Embrace new challenges, and try harder to accept the faults of others. Imagination is your ally. Give an offer second thoughts. • GEMINI (May 21-June 21). Allow others to carry some of your burdens. Rewrite the rules if they no longer make you happy. 'Ybu and your friends have similar desires, and if you unite to strive for a collective goal, you will certainly attain it. Pay attention to details tonight. • CANCER (June 22-July 22). Speak out and stand up for yourself. Someone strong, compassionate and sensitive will enter your life. A bonus or commission should be spent pampering yourselfl Someone is setting you up to do a "favor" you wouldn't otherwise take. • LEO (July 23-Aug. 22). Being sensitive to the needs of others doesn't mean sacrificing your own principles, so find the balance. Several admirers could compete for your attention at once. You may notice you're getting numb to certain people or situations. • TODAY'S BIRTHDAY (Ma^ 1). It's a year of exceptional luck, especially in love. Singles will start dating someone new this month, possibly a Libra or Pisces. If you remember not to take anyone for granted, major commitments and wiid adventures will happen in June. Job success comes at the price of overtime hours in July, but If you want the big rewards, you must put in the hard work. Your lucky numbers are: 6, 49, 23, 5 and 20. • VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22). Steady, persistent effort is more effective than erratic bursts of genius. Concentration is the key to making money A Leo or Scorpio will most likely steal your heart. Your friends are generous, but they will expect something in return. • LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 23). Someone may be perfect for more than one role in your life, and you're open to the possibilities. Hot chemistry is not a good reason to warrant a bold move in the dating scene tonight. A relative will help you out, whether or not you need it. • SCORPIO (Oct. 24-Nov. 21). Your desire to learn everything there is to know about a business deal is your key to success. You'll find many things to love about your new buddy. Your social confidence will rise when you revamp your wardrobe and office. • SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21). Aim high and take every opportunity to prove yourself worthy of success. The stars will help you find the right person, so stop thinking and feel your way through romance. Ivlarried couples will find bliss when they party together. • CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19). Motto for the day: If it feels right, it probably is. Talking with a good friend puts everything into perspective. Travel or connection with foreigners is very beneficial for you now. Tonight, play hard to get, but don't spoil the fun. • AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18). When you meet someone who sparks your mind, as well as your heart, you'll fall head over heels for him or her. Separate facts from wishes when talking with a pal about money. Seek down-to-earth financial partners tonight. • PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20). A love interest wants to know more about your past, and it may be time to tell ail. Keeping secrets will only lead to problems in the long- run. You'll gravitate toward those who share your interests in pets and health-related issues. Salina forecast Today High: 87 Low: 57 Mostly sunny. South wind 20 to 30 mph. U.S. District Judge David Hurd was a tough critic of both the work of King, whom he calls "a somewhat well-known author of novels and screenplays," and of Christina Starobin, an adjunct professor at Ulster Community College, who filed the lawsuit. Hurd filed the decision April 17 from his chambers in Utica. "Both the plaintiff's unpublished manuscript and king's novel were read 'cover to coven' This reading of a work by King was a first. Also, no other work of the plaintiff had ever been read. Quite frankly, neither work was a particularly good read," Hiird wrote. Starobin, of Saugerties, copyrighted her unpublished manuscript, "Blood Eternal," in 1995. She sent the book to one editor at Penguin Putnam, and after making suggested revisions, submitted it to another editor there June 10,1996. King's "Desperation," published by Penguin Putnam, was copyrighted Sept. 18, 1996, and Starobin received her manuscript two days later. McCartney says wife's spirit alive NEW YORK — Paul McCartney, who lost his wife, Linda, to breast cancer in 1998, says he's comforted by thoughts that her spirit lives on. "After Linda died, I think all of us in the family would hear noises or see things and think, 'That's Linda; that's mom ....' And I think in some ways, it's very comforting to think she's still here," McCartney told ABC's "Good Morning America" while promoting "Blackbird Singing," an anthology of 48 poems and song lyrics. /%ADTMCV McCartney said he has been IMCCAHTNtY compelled to write poetry since her death, including a poem called "Her Spirit" in which Linda's spirit visits him in the woods, in the form of a white squirrel. "You don't know if it's true. But it's a great thought. And it's an uplifting thought. And so I allow myself to go there," McCartney said. Reynolds sees financial light OMAHA, Neb. — Actress and singer Debbie Reynolds, 69, forced to sell her Las Vegas hotel and casino at a 1998 bankruptcy auction, says it's never too late to turn around financial problems. Reynolds was at a news conference Sunday with investment wizard Warren Buffett, the multibillionaire chairman of Berkshire Hathaway. "That's why you should try to learn from the best. So, Mr Buffett and his organization are the best, so I feel I should be here to smarten up," Reynolds said. "At least it's a beginning." T ADVICE Ann gives go-ahead for same-sex family showers Dear Ann Landers: I am a female aerobics instructor at a nearby gym. I have encouraged my 12-year-old daughter to become involved in athletics. She plays team sports and also works out at the gym where I work. Sometimes we wind up in the dressing room at the same time, so we shower or undress in front of each other. We also have used the steam room together, totally bare, except for a towel. I see nothing wrong with females, especially mothers and daughters, seeing each other naked. ~ ^ Most women consider it a bonding experience. One of my girlfriends, however, says it is unhealthy and I should put a stop to it. I would not want to harm my child in any ANN LANDERS Creators Syndicate Inc. way, Ann. Is my girlfriend right? — New York Mom Dear Mom: I believe it is perfectly OK for a child to shower with a parent of the same sex. I do, however, see a problem when the child and the parent are of different sexes. This can be confusing and disturbing for children beyond a certain age. Women who exercise together often shower in front of one another. Tell your friend you appreciate her concern, but there is nothing to worry about. Dear Ann Landers: Two years ago, you printed the poem "A Part of America Died," which honors fallen policemen. However, I don't believe you gave credit to the rightful author. His name is Harry Koch. I am retired from the Maricopa County Sheriff's office in Arizona and worked with Harry We all knew about his prolific poetry writing. In the '60s and '70s, many of his poems were featured in the old County Attorneys and Sheriffs magazine. I hope you will print that poem again in honor of Police Memorial Week in May. And please credit Harry Koch as the author. Thank you. — Richard Edwards, Glendale, Ariz. Dear Richard Edwards: I appreciate your persistence in getting this information to me and am pleased to give credit where it's due: A Part of America Died by Harry Koch Somebody killed a policeman today. And a part of America died. A piece of our country he swore to protect Will be buried with him at his side. The suspect who shot him will stand up in court, With counsel demanding his rights. While a young widowed mother must work for her kids ^ k And spend alone many long nights, y The beat that he walked was a battle-^ field, too. Just as if he'd gone off to war Though the flag of our nation won't fly at half-mast. To his name they will add a gold star. Yes, somebody killed a policeman today. It happened in your town or mine. While we slept in comfort behind our locked doors, A cop put his life on the line. Now, his ghost walks a beat on a dark city street. And he stands at each new rookie's side. He answered the call and gave us his all. And a part of America died. Write to Ann Landers at P.O. Box 11562, Chicago, IL 60611.
