Page 2D THE 0 Sunday, June 25, 1972 Cards Pound Seaver, Mets 11-0; Astros Win From Report St. Louis battered New York ace Tom Seaver for 10 hits and Luis Melerdez greeted reliever Ray Sadecki with a pinch-hit grand slam home, run as the Cardinals drubbed the Mets 11-0 Saturday behind Reggie Cleveland's six hitter. Coupled with Pittsburgh's 34 triumph over Chicago, the defeat dropped the Mets I 3 games behind the Pirates in the National League East. In another XL game. Cesar Cedeno drove home two runs with a single and a double and Lee May added a home run as the Houston' Astros defeated the Cincinnati Reds 4-1 behind Larry Dierker's seven-hit pitching to regain first place in the National League West.

In the American League. California lefthander Clyde Wright stopped Oakland and" Vida Blue 3-1, Milwaukee tripped Boston 5-2, Baltimore shaded Detroit 3-1 and Jim Kaat earned his ninth victory of the season as Mnnesota beat Kansas Cty 4-1. Bill Mercer, a member of the Texas Rangers broadcast team, vvlll be the featured speaker. Mercer, the former voice of North Texas State and Dallas Cowboys, will be accompanied by Ranger third baseman Dave Nelson. The luncheon will be a father-and-son affair, and the Kiwanis Little League base- bal team will be guests of honor.

Former NTSU Star Vernon Cole Dies After Long Illness WACO Funeral services were held here 'Saturday for Francis Vernon Cole. 34, a former star athlete at Pilot. Point High School and North Texas State University. Cole, one of the finest football players ever produced by NT. passed away at 11:40 a.m.

Friday in a Waco Hospital following a lengthy illness. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Carolyn Cole, one'daughter, Karan, and two sons, Jeff and Kyle; his parents Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Cole of Pilot Point; two sisters, Mrs.

Mandy Richardson of Pilot Point and Mrs. Mary Ann Johnson of Houston: three brothers, George Cole of Wolfe City, Glenn Cole of Houston and Charlie Cole Jr. of Denton. Funeral services were held at the Lake Shore Baptist Church in Waco with the Rev. Deryl Fleming officiating, followed by interment at Belew Cemetery Pilot Point and Aubrey.

After an outstanding athletic career at Pilot Point, Cole quarterbacked the Eagles during the 1957-58-59 seasons, directing NT to a 9-1 record and a Sun Bowl appearance in 1959. Cole then played professional football in Canada for Winnipeg before serving in the Air Force as an officer. He then played one more year in Canada before taking a position as assistant football coach at Wharton Junior College. When McClennan Community College opened in Waco. Cole was named athletic director.

At the time of his death, he was Director of Administrative Services at the school. It has been requested that donations in Cole's memory be given to either the Multiple Sclerosis Fund or the American Cancer Society.
