A4 WEDNESDAY. OCTOBER 23, 1996 NATION THE SALINA JOURNAL BRIEFLY FOOTBALL Six adults charged after scuffle at game OLATHE — Six adults have been charged with taking part in a scuffle that followed a second- grade football game earlier this month. Three men and three women were charged Monday in Johnson County District Court with misdemeanor counts of disorderly conduct. Each was mailed a summons to appear in court Nov. 20. "It's particularly bad when you see parents doing this in front of their children," District Attorney Paul Morrison said. "We try to adopt the policy that we enforce the law when it comes to inappropriate physical violence." The fight occurred Oct. 12 at a public park in this Kansas City suburb after the game involving teams from the Football & Cheerleading Club of Johnson County. Ex-mayor indicted in death of wife, judge BILOXI, Miss. — Former Biloxi Mayor Pete Halat Jr. and three other people were indicted Tuesday on federal charges in the deaths nine years ago of a judge and his wife, a former councilwoman. The indictment accused Halat of participating in a tele- HALAT BUFEALOMEAT Buffalo jerky for « LOWEEN TREATS Z MEATS Sallna, KS (East of checkered water toww on Scartoi a! the Airport) 113)823-7474 800-435-6328 Father sharpened buckle on son's helmet By The Associated Press ALBUQUERQUE. N.M. — The father of a high school football player admitted he sharpened a buckle on his son's helmet before a game in which several opponents were cut, one badly enough to need 12 stitches. The father said he did it because referees had failed to penalize players for roughing up his son in an earlier game, the Albuquerque Journal reported Tuesday. Officials stopped an Oct. 12 game between St. Pius and Albuquerque Academy after five Academy players were cut. They then found that a buckle on the helmet worn by St. Pius junior Mike Cito had an edge sharp enough to shred a magazine cover. Some Academy players said they believed other St. Pius athletes knew about the buckle before the game was stopped. Last Friday, the newspaper reported, Stephen Cito admitted to the Rev. Ronald G. Schwenzer, principal at St. Pius, that he had sharpened the buckle. "I was shocked when he said it. He said he is very remorseful for doing it," Schwenzer said. "He indicated that the previous week he felt his son was being tackled and getting pushed around unfairly and the referees said they didn't see anything. This was his dad's solution to that." Mike Cito was expelled Monday, and already had been dismissed from the team. Schwenzer said Mike Cito's parents appealed the expulsion, but the father's confession wasn't enough evidence to warrant keeping the teen-ager in school. "The son is 17 years old," Schwenzer said. "We're talking about an age of being able to reason. We still have to look at what the intent of this was." Academy senior Joe Paquette, who need- ed 12 stitches to close a gash on his forearm, said he believed several St. Pius players made indirect references to the buckle before the game was stopped. "It seems like they knew what was going on," Paquette said. Schwenzer said there wasn't any evidence any of the coaches, athletic staff or other players knew about the buckle in advance. The incident is being investigated by the New Mexico Activities Association, the governing body for high school sports in the state, and by District Attorney Robert Schwartz. phone scam that preyed on lonely homosexuals and agreeing to the contract murders of the Circuit Judge Vincent Sherry — a onetime law partner of Halat's — and his wife, Margaret. The two, both 58, were shot to death in their home in September 1987. In 1991, four people were found guilty of conspiring to kill Sherry and operating the jailhouse scam, which bilked hundreds of thousands of dollars from gays who answered fake personal ads. Today's indictment, under the federal Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act, accuses the defendants of crimes ranging from murder and conspiracy to commit murder to money laundering. FBI investigates e-mail offering pornography SAN FRANCISCO — The Federal Bureau of Investigation is investigating e-mail, apparently originating in New York City, that offered to sell child pornography to Bay Area residents. The e-mail — sent Monday to at least half a dozen Bay Area residents — said: "If you send your picture, I can morph your face into one of the action shots ...." George Grotz, FBI spokesman in San Francisco, said agents in the city, New York and Baltimore are looking into the matter. Grotz said sexual exploitation of a minor is a federal crime punishable by up to 25 years in prison and a $250,000 fine for each violation. He noted, however, that a solicitation differed under law from an actual physical transmission of child pornography and was not necessarily illegal. Grotz said the FBI's office in San Francisco received four to five inquiries about the e-mail Monday. Another inquiry was made after the same e-mail came to The Examiner. Grotz said the message could be bogus — mischief by a hacker. Worker at Gore's home might be illegal alien WASHINGTON — A landscaper working at Vice President Al Gore's compound was charged Monday as an illegal alien, authorities said. Federal agents arrested and initiated deportation proceedings against Issac Belzazar Figueroa, 22, of Honduras, and detained another worker, The Washington Post reported. Agents from the Immigration and Naturalization Service questioned four employees of a landscaping company that does work on the grounds of the U.S. Naval Observatory, where the vice president's official residence is situated. During a routine check of workers' identification cards, a Secret Service officer noticed that a work permit of an employee from El Salvador had recently expired and called the INS.
