a By MARIAN INMAN We all breast cancer or any form of cancer and hope ttft efcy that NBdufth cdMeS uoWitha Weventltitve. Researchers ft a California are collecting human milk as part of a study llalfi' Store abdut breast cancer, the leading cause of cancer fa tf i. k. dfie of lie tilings they ale looking for Is factors In human milk 'that cancer in the baby. Dr.Sykes, director of research at the hospital's Southern California Cancer Center, whose own speclaltyls study of viruses, said that the study Is being done with the eratlon of La Leche League, an organization which advocates breast feeding of babies.

At the time I was in California they had collected about 30 samples of human milk but their problem was storing it. The doctors explained that It takes a very large amount of milk to accumulate enough of the factors they are interested in 'to make the study worthwhile. The milk must then be spun down In a centrifuge to concentrate the factors from perhaps 40 quarts of human milk into a mass about the size of a pencil eraser. Dr. Sykes did a similar study on mice several years ago while in.

a hospital at Houston. He came to California two years ago to head the research wing which will be housed In the hospital's hew diagnostic and treatment center which is now in the process of being constructed. Viruses are known to cause breast cancer in certain strains of mice anil there has been considerable speculation that viruses may the cause of breast cancer, but until proven there remains doubt. Nevertheless, they will look in the milk. They do not think any viruses are present but they want to rule them out as a possible cause of breast cancer.

The doctor and his staff are conducting an intensive investi- gation of breast tissue obtained from cancer patients and have examined them under an electron microscope. Dr. Sykes has i a hunch that cancer is a genetic disease which may or may not be associated with a virus. He feels that it is conceivable that the hormonal and other changes that accompany pregnancy in humans creates an environment which discourages the development of breast cancer and hopes to find the factor, whatever it might be if it is detectable in the breast milk. If such a factor exists, the research team hopes to find it in, the an- alyses of the human milk samples.

Dr. Sykes says that the work is in too early a stage to say whether is so. The goal of this work is to see whether there is a detectable difference in the architecture of breast cells that are, or will become malignant. We will all hope that; soon we will learn through research how to prevent or cure this dread disease. 4 At the present time, the two most effective means of eradicating malignant disease are by surgery and radiation used singly or in combination.

It goes without saying that if enough radiation is given, or if the surgeon excises widely enough, any malignant disease can be eradicated. The problem, however, is to eradicate the disease and still keep the patient alive and in good health. It is only by the skillful use of people trained in these fields, surgery and radiation, used either singly or in combination, that a much higher cure rate has been achieved in recent years than was formerly Bernice Kochan of Cleveland, Ohio, designer of the 1969 Christmas Seal, won a national contest for a postage stamp to commemorate, the sesquicentennial of Memphis, Term. The stamp issued May 17 at Memphis, depicts W. Handy, "father of the who brought fame to the city through "The Memphis and The Beale Street i The colorful stamp shows the musician limned in pink against a purple background.

The figure of the. Negro jazzman, who also wrote the "St. Louis is based on a statue which stands in Handy Park, on the corner of Beale and Third Streets in Memphis. Marc Copage and Michael Link, 6-year old buddies featured as Corey Baker and EarlJ. Waggedorn onNBC Television's "Julia" series, were named 1969 National Honorary Christmas Seal Youth Ambassadors by 'Judge Ernest E.

Mason, President-elect of the National Tuberculosis and Respiratory Disease Association. Mike and Marc said that they want to go to the White House and give the President his Christmas Seals, and let all the kids, everywhere know how Important it is to use the Seals so that people won't be sick anymore. Marc and Michael will be spokesmen to the children of the country when the annual Christmas Seal appeal begins on November 12 and runs through December 31. The announcement has been made that Mike Douglas, popular television personality has 'been named 1969 Honorary Christmas Seal Campaign Chairman. Mr.

Douglas said that he would help each citizen be aware that the strongest single way to battle against the increasing menace of emphysema and air pollution and achieve the ultimate goal of tuberculosis eradication is to do their collective best this year and insure the most successful appeal in Christmas history. Christmas Seals funds wage a constant struggle against respiratory diseases and the facts which cause them. Lets accept this challenge and do our part during the Seals campaign, November 12 through December 31.
