(UPI Facsimile) CHANNEL CHATTER Yves Montand: Style and Class; 'Victoria Regina' Finely Acted By FRED DANZIG NEW YORK (UPI) I'm one of the lucky ones. I was able to watch each of the specials the three networks put on simultaneously Thursday night. Here Is how I filled up on this three-course banquet: - At 11:15 a.m., a painfully early hour for me, I found myself In an ABC-TV screening room watching "Yves Montand on Broadway." At 2:30 D.m- CBS-TV screened "Bi ography of a Bookie Joinf for usjenjoyame at tnat eariy nour mat the glow away and I hope the agencies involved will be nagged Into seeing that this kind of coaxial crossfire doesn't happen again. Now to the shows: The Yves Montand show was so And then I watched the NBC-TV special, Julie Harris and James Donald in "Victoria Regina," at home, where the color set dwells. I look back on a day filled with such goodies and I'm almost ready to forgive the things like "The Hatha ways," Bob Cummings and Bert Parks. But then I remember mat the public was barred from partaking of these three TV specials because of the parallel scheduling. That takes some of I am almost afraid to think of how I would have flipped If I watched it at a respectable hour like 10 at night. 1 was sorry to see the show end. My compliments to the charming artistry of that master entertainer, M. Montand, and to his associates in the venture: Polly Bergen, John Raitt, Helen Gallagher and Bobby Van. All contributed importantly to the success. What made It a success? Lots of fine songs all stylishly performed. IV J xr AJ 139 West ) fizyii ft Kt Landry NEED MONEY TO DO YOUR CHRISTMAS SHOPPING? The "CBS Reports" documentary was an enterprising, overwhelming and, by all too many modern stand' ards, courageous story as It ex posed and shattered the popular Illu sion that the 2 bet with the friendly neighborhood bookie is Just good, dean, hamless fun. Baloney. The script by producer Jay Mc Mull en. because of the restrained way in which it was designed, gave power ful support to the filmed evidence he collected. The enormity of the scandal was brought to an unmistak able boll. End of rave No. 2. "Victoria Regina," Robert Hartungs version of Laurence Ho us man's character study. Improved upon the original play. Hartung successfully added some gentle scenes that served to sharpen the sense of devotion between queen and her prince without infringing upon character or story. Miss Harris and James Donald were superb as the royal couple. They never faltered as they regis tered the many moods of love. Feeling and devotion swirled through their meeflngs and one could sense their thoughts as they taught each other die meaning of duty, devotion and love .in a palace. Beautiful, beautiful acting. Sensible and sen sitive direction by George Schaef-er. And my compliments to Miss Harris's makeup roan.
