They Come To See Where The Buffalo Roam By DARWINNE HAKANSON . Written for The Associated Press PRATT, Kan. (AP)-One of the most awsome sights for early American travelers crossing the great plains was a stampede of frightened buffaloes. Today small herds of buffaloes, kept at five game reserves in Kansas, are also an awesome sight to tourists—and many drive miles out of their way to see them. The largest herd is at the 3,529- acre reserve south of Garden City. Other herds are near Calista in Kingman County," at the Meade County State Lake, the 2,560-acre Maxwell game refuge in McPher- son County, and at the Crawford County State Lake No. 1 north of Pittsburg. A rancher in Scott County has a private herd of bison in a pasture adjacent to the state lake. The largest herd in the United States is in Yellowstone National Park. The herd in Kingman County attracts U.S. 54 travelers, many of whom had never seen a buffalo except in pictures. A full - grown bison measures five to six feet high at the shoulder and weighs almost 2,000 pounds. An estimated 60 million are said to have roamed the plains at one time. From about 1840 on, white hunters slaughtered so many that by 1890 only 1,000 head of buffalo remained. Just before the turn of the century, they had almost vanished. The few that were mostly privately owned. The American and Canadian governments purchased these few and put them on reserves to save them from extinction. The bison soon began to increase. A number of buffaloes are sold annually from each of the five game areas in Kansas, in compliance with the wildlife management plan of the Kansas Forestry Fish and Game Commission. Approval by the Kansas Corporation Commission of the sale of the Cover Moving and Storage Co. to Best Truck Lines, Inc., removes from the Kansas scene the oldest name in the moving and transfer business in the state. The name Cover goes back to 1883 when the late Phil Cover established a transfer business, using horse-drawn drays to move household goods and merchandise and anything else Ottawans wanted moved from one place to another. A half century ago his son, Harley P. Cover, took over the operation of the transfer line and purchased the first motor-driven truck for use in transfer work in Ottawa. The truck was used along with horse-drawn vehicles for some time. At one time during the 50 years the line has been operated by Harley Cover, the firm was using or more trucks, serving an area of 27 states, and Cover trucks went over much of the nation in a regular transfer and hauling activity. For many years when Phil Cover was operating with horse- drawn vehicles, he was the man Ottawans looked to when a heavy object or piece of machinery needed to be moved from one place to another. This work was continued by Harley P. Cover. The firm moved anything from pianos to printing presses and conducted a storage business also in the building at 334 N. Main which now is owned by Best Truck Lines. Harley Cover, who is retired, las found time through the years o be active in civic affairs and las been known as Ottawa's >arade man. He has created many >eautiful floats for parades at Christmas time and at other ipecial seasons of the year. Mr. and Mrs. Cover live at [432 S.
