12 MONDAY. OCTOBER 21, 1996 THE SALINA JOURNAL T SPOTLIGHT Jamestown youth receives award for his very first deer Darrell Zimmerman, son of Judy Zimmerman, Jamestown, and Fred Zimmerman, Des Moines, Iowa, shot a trophy deer the first day of hunting season in December of 1994. He shot a 21-point buck with a firearm. Darrell had long waited to get to go hunting like his father and cousin Roger VanMeter. He had taken his hunter safety course when he was 8. He had gone pheasant hunting with his father, but couldn't wait until he turned 14, the first year of legal deer hunting in Kansas. He had learned how to cut up deer for processing from his cousin Roger, who was a meat cutter for Dillons, and who came up hunting every year. He was tired of cutting up everyone else's deer. So in preparation for his first year of deer hunting in 1994 his parents purchased him a high-powered rifle for a Christmas present and gave it to him early. However, things looked bleak for him getting to go hunting, because his parents separated just prior to hunting season. However, his mother was determined that he would still get the opportunity and one time took him out practice shooting with the gun before opening day. His father came back to take him hunting. Darrell was excited to spend some time with his father and to finally get to go deer hunting. They went hunting along the river in Cloud County and he got the trophy deer on the first morning of hunting season. Darrell then cut up his own deer. Getting this trophy deer was a highlight, but it also meant a sacrifice. Darrell was a starter for the freshmen basketball team at Concordia, and since hunting season started in the middle of the week, he missed practice and thus had to sit on the bench at the following game the next day. He said it was worth it. He had the deer head preserved by taxidermist Tim Hager of Beloit. It was then that people suggested that he have it scored for trophy awards. Darrell received a State of Kansas trophy award by the Kansas Fish and Game Department. Recently, he received a national award from the Boone and Crockett Club. The award he received was for an outstanding trophy into the 23rd Awards Entry Period. He is among a very elite group of hunters who have taken North American big game specimens large enough to make the awards book. Darrell's trophy will be printed in the Boone and Crockett Club's 23rd Big Game Awards which will be printed in 1998. His trophy non-typical white-tail deer scored 204-5/8 points (minimum to make the Darrell Zimmerman, Jamestown, received a State of Kansas trophy award for a deer he shot in 1994. record book is a score of 195). The points are based on length and spread of antlers. He will not know his ranking until the awards period comes to an end in 1998. The first formal recognition of outstanding North American big game trophies by the Boone and Crockett Club was in the 1932 records book. The scoring was refined and there have been 22 Awards Programs since 1947. Trophy entry now occurs during a three- year period. The process that Darrell had to go through to get the deer measured included allowing the deer to dry for the required time, having the deer scored locally and by an official measurer for Boon and Crockett, and finally sending in the scoring and picture to the organization. He recently received his certificate and plaque.
