It coutain nvc-lve seven pages of valuable reading matter, comprising all the most important and interesting articles, original and selected, printed in the DAILY during the week.

The circulation of tlie WEEKLY beyond dispute the largest of any paper in the State. Go vrhcre jou will throughout its broacl extent, and at every other man's house you ivill find uiat lie either takes the WEEKLY or borrows it from his neighbor. This extensive makes it the most valuable advertising medium our business men can command to attract the attention and secure the trade of the reading and more intelligent people oi our State. Single copies of the WEEKLY XEWS can be procured at our Counting Koom, neatly done up iu. wrappers, ready for mailing; and wo would suggest that onr merchants cannot, at a i up- proxinuiting the same expenditure, send their friends in the country, in this or in the old States, a more acceptable present than sample copy of tbe WEEKLY NEWS.

that covers the muddy banks of the ship channel. The writer farther saya, -ivc hope this article will interest the cotton jilanter as it is their interest to know these facts, for facts they are," and that any planter- can take the table and make their own figures." We believe tha writer to be candid, but his devotion to Houston and his envy of Galvestoa leads him into misstate- aierits, unfair inferences, nud to the- betrayal of utter ignorance of the subject under consideration. The writer makes this misstatcment first, sold during the year, at Galveston, bales, when Galvestou received that year 1315,100 -bales only. The extent of his error is 13.GS3 bales, valued at which is exactly $1,231,330 more than the Galveston factors find commission merchants, can afford to seed agents into every town," obtained for their sliaro of the- profits of" the aforesaid pickings, valued at Again, in -7 lie says we received 187.07!) bales. That year wo received exactly bales, showing a deficit of bales, valued at which little deficit cotton factors af Galveston wrnld be pleased to have, as it exceed! their profits on that year's pickings about 00.

The writer professing to get his figures, which are facts for planters, out of our annual review, published September 1st, thus debits us with four or live millions of dollars by malting false entries in our books, is well for the planter that this wri ter condescendingly allows him to take our tables and make his own figures, for this stupid exhibition of entire ignorance upon the part of the Under of the startling intelligence vouchsafed, without a better head than his own to understand oiir reports, would soon bring the planter into the belief that somebody owes Galveston about four millions oi dollars. This all shows tho ignorance of the Telegraph writer more than his wickedness. His wickedness shows itself in this statement: Referring to the value of pickings and charges hero estimated for throe yeara at $2,170,424, he says, now this enormous amount of money has been lost to the planters of Texas." At tho time we first reported "pickings to the extent of 933 bales we stated unequivocally that the exports as compared -with the receipts exhibited a difference of the number indicated, that the deficit was derived from loose cotton not baled until after its receipt here from small lots of cotton received here in bales during the most active season, Science, Literature nnd Arts, the Agricultural and Mechanical College of Kentucky, the College of the Bible, the Normal, Law and Medical Colleges. Tliero are some fourteen students from Texas in tho University, and wo learn that the session opened, two -weeks ago, with upwards of 400 students. This number, it was expected, would be considerably increased.

The University is located at Lexington, anil its extensive, beautiful and valuable lands embrace a portion of the old Clay Aahhind estate. The lowest cash value of buildings and lands is placed at 8300,000. The institution has, in addition to tho farm, a stock, a horticultural nml mechanical department. At the latter the celebrated Climax Reaper and Mower is made. A largo number of yonug men of the college have obtained admittance into this department, and, under the direction of skillful mechanics, are learning useful trades.

For some months, ai; different times, Jas. McCarty had shown signs of mental aberatiou. On the day previous to the dreadful occurrence, McCarty expressed the wish, to his to be baptized right away- by the Kev. Mr. Hurley.

Ho soon left his home on Duffau Creek and proceeded up the creek several miles to where his father, Jas. McCurty, lived. He told his father his intentions of being baptized by Mr. Hurley, but his father persuaded him to remain where he was and he would go after Mr. Hurley, who lived several miles off.

The sou agreed to this, but when, in the evening, tho father returned with Mr. Hurley, it was found that tho son had gone back home. The father and Mr. Hurley followed to the residence of the insane man. Bcil-timo came and all retired for the uiglit, Mr.

"We then said, and say yet, the pickings proper were less than 500 bales, and we believe that if cotton was not so damaged by stoppage and exposure on the route to Galveston to rain, depredations of cattle and, not least, to be rolled in the Houston mud, as to render it necessary to take off the damaged cotton in order to make the bale merchantable in the markets of the world, there wonld not have been fifty bales of pickings during the year. The said pickings then may be less than 500 bales, of which one-half belonged to planters, the rest to country buyers, to Houston and Galveston buyers, leaving, at the outside, c. loss ol 250 bales, or about three- quarters of a "pound ox cotton loss to planters perbale, taken out in sampling.
