During the training, students received instruction in drill and ceremonies, weapons, map reading, tactics, military courtesy, military justice, first aid, and Army history and traditions. Bolieu is the son of Don L. and June E. Bolieu, 825 Plaza Drive. • Pvt. Justin S. Mermis has graduated from basic military training at Fort Sill, Lawton, Okla. During the training, students received instruction in drill and ceremonies, weapons, map reading, tactics, military courtesy, military justice, first aid, and Army history and traditions. Mermis is the son of Ada J. Crensaw, Wilson, and Rob Mermis, Ellsworth. NAVY: Seaman Recruit Christopher T. Pope, son of Terry A. Pope, 1202 Andrew Ave., recently completed Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, HI. During the eight-week program, Pope completed a variety of training which included classroom study, practical hands-on instruction, and emphasis on physical fitness. In particular, Pope learned naval customs, first aid, fire fighting, water safety and survival, and a variety of safety skills required for working around ships and aircraft. • Jacob C. Stroede, Ellsworth, recently enlisted in the Navy for guaranteed training at the Navy's Machinist Mate (Submarines) School and can receive up to $14,400 in college educational benefits through the Montgomery GI Bill. • Stroede the son of Marc and Gwendolyn Stroede, will report to basic training at Great Lakes, 111. in June. Upon completion of basic training he will report to school in Great Lakes, 111. Upon completion of school Stroede will transfer to one of the Navy's many exciting duty stations around the world. • Seaman Recruit Justin A. Jensen, son of Carol R. Paulson, Ellsworth, recently graduated from the Basic Enlisted Submarine Course at the Naval Submarine School in Groton, Conn. During the five-week course, Jensen learned the basic theory, construction, and operation of nuclear-powered submarines. Jansen also learned shipboard organization, damage control, and submarine safety and escape procedures. Jensen also learned about T SPOTLIGHT The artistry of Bennlngton residents Rusty Nelson (left) and Don Wagner was recently displayed at Fort Hays State University. Bennington artists display 'Homegrown' artworks , The artistry of Bennington residents Rusty Nelson and Don Wagner was the focus of the 1996 Fort Hays English Conference luncheon on Sept. 28. The two presented a program which explained the concepts behind their painting and poetry exhibit "Homegrown," which was pn display at the Fort Hays Union Gallery. The subject of their address was "Celebrate the Color." In addition to explaining some of the techniques and inspirations for their work, the two discussed the function of art in our lives, and examined the role of local subjects in artistic endeavors. The presentation included a slide show of the paintings, and a reading of accompanying poems. Nelson is one of the owners of Nelson/Weis, an advertising and marketing agency, and Wagner is an instructor at Southeast of Saline High School. home port in Norfolk, Va., in support of NATO-peace efforts as part of the USS Enterprise Battle Group. During the deployment, USS Robert G. Bradley has participated in humanitarian and peacekeeping exercises involving naval units from Bulgaria, Russia, Turkey, Israel, Italy and Romania. Sailors from Bedinger's ship helped renovate an orphanage that houses HIV-positive children. Bedinger and fellow crewmembers pitched hi by doing repair work and bringing in fresh "medical supplies and equipment as well as educational books and other reading material. Port visits for Bedinger and shipmates have included Bulgaria, Romania and Italy. The 1988 graduate of Salina Central High School joined the Navy in September 1992. Bedinger is a 1992 graduate of the University of San Diego, San Diego, Calif., with a BA degree. • HospitaJman Joe Crick, son of Clifford E. Crick and Jeanne M. Yenni of 1201 S. Santa Fe Ave., is currently halfway through a six-month deployment to the Mediterranean Sea aboard the amphibious assault ship USS Saipan. Crick is one of more than 2,500 Sailors and Marines aboard the 7 ship who have traveled more than 12,000 miles since departing their homeport in Norfolk, Va. last June. Crick has been operating in the Mediterranean and Adriatic seas in support of NATO-peace efforts. Crick and shipmates participated in several joint training missions, including a tactical recovery of aircraft and personnel missions with Albanian units which was similar to the one used to rescue Air Force Captain Scott O'Grady in Bosnia last summer. Transporting more than 1,700 fully equipped Marines of the 24th marine Expeditionary Unit, Crick's ship is capable of providing a rapid build-up of combat power to support assaults from the sea against defended positions ashore. So far during the deployment Crick has visited Spain, Italy, Greece and Turkey. The 1993 graduate of Salina Central High School joined the Navy in July 1993. ARMY RESERVE: Pfc. Christy L. Kmak has graduated from basic military training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C. With nearly 50 percent of the Navy's ships and submarines deployed at any given time, Jensen will spend roughly a quarter of his first enlistment at sea. The 1995 graduate of Haysville Alternative High School of Haysville, joined the Navy in March 1996. • Lt. Andrew W. Bedinger, son of Doris C. Bedinger of 509 W. Beloit, is currently halfway through a six-month deployment to the Mediterranean and Adriatic seas on board the guided missile frigate USS Robert G. Bradley.
