The Demon Deacons got a 34-yard field goal from Frank Harnisch in the third quarter after Georgia had bolted to a 21-13 halftime lead with two touchdowns following fumble recoveries in the final 90 seconds of the second quarter.

It was the second straight victory for the Deacons, who won only one game last season. It was the season opener for Georgia. Georgia's Rex Robinson was just short on a 58-yard field goal attempt on the final play of the game. ATHENS, Ga. Jay Venuto fired three touchdown passes and James McDougald ran for 193 yards as Wake Forest upset 12th-ranked Georgia 22-21 Saturday.

Venuto connected with McDougald on a 9-yard pass for the game-winning touchdown 31 seconds into the final quarter of a sloppily-played game in which both teams suffered seven turnovers. Venuto, who completed 20 of 34 passes for 273 yards, hit on four of five for 65 yards in an 89-yard drive that erased Georgia's 21-16 lead after three quarters. Quarterback Stanley Driskell came off the bench to score two touchdowns and throw for a third in leading Duke's Blue Devils to a 28-14 upset victory over East Carolina as Red Wilson won his coaching debut. Driskell replaced starter Craig Browning at the start of the second period and led Duke on two 80-yard marches through the Pirates, using only 15 plays. On the Rebels' first play from scrimmage, McGee took a pitchout and raced around the right end of the Memphis State line. He broke one tackle, then headed unchallenged for the end zone.

Near the end of the second quarter when the Tigers had cut the Ole Miss advantage to 24-21, McGee again provided the big play. That time, the 6-1, 195-pound tailback went over right tackle, cut to the sideline, headed back across the field and raced 74 yards for the score. Colorado State now is 0-2. On two occasions while the game was in doubt, Colorado State had a first down inside the Arkansas 5 and both times came up empty-handed. Baylor Texas 17 7 WACO, Texas Baylor exploded for 17 second-quarter with Walter Abercrombie flashing 19 yards for a touchdown and Howard Fields setting up another with a 53-yard punt return, as Baylor defeated Texas 17-7. The Aggies tried to fashion a comeback with David Brothers scoring on a six-yard run in the third quarter, but the loss of three second-half fumbles ruined chances. It was Baylor's second consecutive victory of the new season, and gave the Bears a 1-0 mark in the Southwest Conference.
