THE SALINA JOURNAL SPORTS MONDAY, APRIL 30, 2001 B5 T PRO BASKETBALL Sweep complete: Lakers roll BRIEFLY Los Angeles makes short work of Trail Blazers behind O'Neal, Bryant and Fisher By The Associated Press PORTLAND, Ore. — After dispatching Portland in three easy games, Shaquille O'Neal says the selfish, rU M F J» bickering Los Angeles lLu'M \<A^&i Lakers of a month ago mssssrSSi are long gone. And the happy bunch that replaced them is primed to continue its march toward a second straight NBA title. "Everyone is on the same page now. We have a mission," O'Neal said after the Lakers beat the Trail Blazers 99-86 Sunday to sweep their first- round series. "If we keep playing like this, it's going to be very hard to beat us," said O'Neal, who led the Lakers with 25 points and 15 rebounds. "We know what it takes to win a championship, because of the phenomenal season we had last year." Los Angeles will play the Sacramento- Phoenix winner in the second round. Kobe Bryant had 22 points and a playoff career-high nine assists, and Derek Fisher added 17 points and eight rebounds for the Lakers, who began their surge by winning the last eight games of the regular season. Portland, meanwhile, lost for the sixth straight time and 17th time in 25 games. The team with the highest payroll in NBA history — $89.7 million — faces an offsea son of uncertainty Coach Mike Dunleavy could be fired, some players could be traded, and even general manager Bob Whitsitt's job isn't safe. "I felt like we had too many challenges, too many obstacles to overcome," said Scottie Pippen, whose goal of a seventh ti- ' tie was thwarted by jealousies, the departure of Shawn Kemp for drug rehabilita- Saliiiajou? niBAPLAYOffg, Sunday's Gaines New York 97, Toronto 89, (New York leads series 2-1) Sacramento 104, Phoenix 96, (Sacramento leads series 2-1) ' L.A. The Kings won, 104-96, to take a 2-1 series advantage. tion and a season-ending injury to Bonzi Wells. "This is the worst — the worst thing I have ever had to deal with throughout my career," Pippen added. "It just wasn't a fun season for us. The outcome of it was just a testament to what we had been dealing with all season." Damon Stoudamire and Steve Smith each scored 25 points to lead the Blazers, and Rasheed Wallace had 13 rebounds but was a major disappointment on offense, missing 15 of 19 shots and scoring nine points. The Lakers say they are better than last year's team, which blew a 3-1 series lead against the Blazers in the conference finals and had to overcome a 15-point fourth-quarter deficit to win Game 7. "Our confidence is at an all-time high. and we caught a team that is not all the way together," Fisher said. Kings 104, Suns 96 PHOENIX — Chris Webber scored 23 points and the Sacramento Kings used old-fashioned basketball virtues — rebounding and free throw shooting — to beat the Phoenix Suns in Game 3 of the first-round playoff series. The Kings lead the best-of-five series 2-1 and are within one victory of their first playoff series triumph in 20 years. Game 4 is Wednesday night in Phoenix. Predrag Stojakovic added 21 points, Doug Christie added 17 and Jason Williams 14, including nine in a row in the third quarter on two 3-pointers and a three-point play, for Sacramento. The Kings made 11 of 12 free throws over the final 3:20 and shot 34-for-41 from the line in the game. Sacramento had a 4838 rebound advantage, 12-9 on the offensive boards. Jason Kidd led Phoenix with 19 points and 16 assists. Tony Delk added 18 points, while Shawn Marion finished with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Knicks 97, Raptors 89 TORONTO— Allan Houston, Latrell Sprewell and Charlie Ward hit several clutch shots in the fourth quarter as New York shrugged off the absence of Marcus Camby to take a 2-1 lead in the best-of-five series. The Knicks made up for their lack of height by making the most of every possession. They shot 53 percent from the field and held the lead for all but a few moments. Houston finished with 24 points, Sprewell had 20 and Glen Rice 18. Ward scored all nine of his points in the fourth quarter New York had to overcome the absence of Camby, the Knicks' leading rebounder and shot blocker, as he continues to try to recover from the trauma of having his mother and two sisters held hostage last Monday Antonio Davis scored 21 points and Vince Carter had 20 for the Raptors, who shot just 5-for-17 in the fourth quarter . KSU Slams Mizzou behind homer binge MANHATTAN— Josh Cavender, Pat Maloney and Kasey Weishaar hit consecutive home runs and Mark English added another — all in the third inning — to power Kansas State to a 10-5 win over Missouri Sunday in Big 12 play It was the first time a Big 12 team had hit four home runs in the same inning in a conference game. Kansas State (24-22, 9-15 Big 12) rallied from a 5-2 deficit and swept a series with Missouri for the first time since 1974. IVIisplayed ball allows Tech to rally past KU LUBBOCK, Texas — Texas Tech scored two runs on a mishandled ball in the bottom of the eighth inning and beat Kansas 4-3 on Sunday The game-winning run came home when Kansas first baseman Kevin Wheeler misplayed a ball hit by Tyler Carson, scoring two Red Raiders. SW Missouri State extends MVC lead OZARK, Mo. (AP) — Jeremy Isenhower scored two runs to lead Southwest Missouri State to a 3-2 win over Wichita State Sunday in the Missouri Valley Conference. The win stretched the Bears' conference lead to three games over the 14-time defending champs with eight to play Wichita State had never been swept in a league series of three or more games. KWU athletes fare well at Southwestern WINFIELD — Kansas Wesleyan's D'Ambrose Finch and Darcy Tolbert were double winners at Saturday's Southwestern Relays. Finch won the long jump (219) and triple jump (45-8), while Tolbert topped the 100 (13.09) and 200 (27.23) fields. Wesleyan also received a first-place finish from Jason Peugh in the 400 (48.42). From Staff and Wire Reports Echevarria wins IMCA feature By The Sallna Journal Salina Speedway fans were given an exciting finish in Saturday night's IMCA Modified A feature as defending champion Tim Echevarria fought off Darrick Klima to take the checkered flag. In the final five laps, the drivers traded the lead several times before Echevarria came out on top. Brian Knoell was third. The Super Stock A feature was plagued by a five-car pileup on the second lap that brought out the red flag. Kenny Fuller was the leader but was unable to continue. Corey Lagroon led the restart and held on for the victory Travis Hoopes was second and Scott Gruber third. Rick Rogers used a restart on lap three to take the lead and win the IMCA Hobby Stock feature. Ryan Ohlde was sec• ond and Brian Weinhold third. Curtis Barnes led all the , way to win the Mini Stock feature. Daryl Brunsell finished second and Frank Hedberg was third. Cruisers and B modifieds return to action Wednesday night in a 7:30 p.m. start. The DCRA Dwarf Cars will be at the track Saturday night for a 7:30 p.m. start. Classiffitti 333 S. Fourth, P.O.
