We have the same favorable condition of public health as has prevailed.during the season, and cannot perceive the slightest indications of unfavorable symptoms.

Business has been rather'dull, but the complaints of hard times ia not more observable than usual, and we think our merchants and traders are doing about as. much as they have any right to expect. The tone of public morality as evidenced by the records at police compare favorably with any city of the same population on either hemisphere. Improvements of every description con-, tiuue to present themselves in every part of the altogether we think we may congratulate ouirselves upon our ous and evidently thriving condition. CRIMINAL Couiu 1 Fayle adjourned Cunrt yesterday iifternoon, after clearing the docket of most of the cases calling for immediate attention.

The next term will commence on the second Mour day in July. The Grand found one hundred and forty-four indictments, most of them being for gambling and sailing liquor on Sunday, contrary to law. A low cases of keoping disorderly houses had the attention of the Court, aad the proprietors were made to contribute handsomely towards replenishing the public exchequer. Of the cases that remain over the most important are that of Pepion, for embezzling funds of the Plxrnis Express Company, and Capt. White, lor shooting Capt.

Williams. In the first case a. witness material to the Slate was not in attendance, and in the last, the prosecuting witness has disappeared. In view of this fact the bond of Cap. WLite was reduced.

Col. Connally, as counsel for Hiley, convicted of embezzling $10,000 entrusted to him by Phirnix Express Company, gave notice of appeal to the Supreme Court. We acknowledge the compliment paid us by Counsel taking the evidence as reported in the News as the statement of facts to be sent to the Supremo Court. The case of Cadua, indicted for forgery was brought ihe court yesterday afternoon, but a the State had announced itself ready for trial it was fouad TUB CODE OK New noticed in our evening edition yesterday, the trial and. acquittal of a gentleman thi grand jury for bearing a challenge to fight a duel.

The evidence disclosed the fact that very intimate relations had existed between Mr. Jacob WoDlsey, late special policeman, and the late United States Marshal for this District, but 'the best friends will sometimes disagree, and the chivalrous poli.ce man taking umbrage at certain expressions of the Marshal, sent that gentleman a formal invitation to settle the matter by mortal combat. Mr. Kerrigan, delivered tho hostile missive, and was very sensibly lold by the Marshal that his principal was a d--d thief, and he could not think of Gghtinghim." Now, under nary circumstances, or had the bearer of the challenge been an ordinary this declaration have led to unpleasant consequences. When it was Bugs geated 10 Mr.

Kerrigan that it was customary in such an emergency as this for the bearer of the challenge to take up the quarrel of his principal, he very sensibly explained that he did not intend to do any such foolish thiug; he contended that the offense was only an offense in a Pickwick- ian sense, and that his only object in presenting the challenge was to prevent, and not br'rng about a mortal combat. As the learned counsel, Mr. Howard, made these explanations to the jury--all of whom were of the colored persuasion-we thought there was eome such twinkle in the eye of a venerable darkey in the box as might have been seen in the left optic of Sam Weller when he knocked the hat of Job Trotter into the gutter, at the memorable I i at the gajden gate. The jury, however, took the same view of the matter that Mr. Howard did, and hU client was triumphantly acquitted.

A KEPORTEU'S per' sons who have not had experience of the troubles attendant upon gathering information regarding any unusual occurrence, cau form an adequate conception of the perplexities with which the effort is at' tended. To get a reliable and concise statement of facts from even of an occurrence is almost impossible. No JUVENILE police itidu i raid on a gang of juvenile negro tiie-es yesterday, and succeeded in bag- gaging five of the enterprising crew. They have been depredating about pro-, aiscaously for several days past, their eiploint having been the robbery of millinery stora on Postoffice street. The oldest of the gang is not more thsn ten yeara old, but has already csds his mark as a cracksman." They Me sll genuine republicans, and carry out the principles the party with an impartiality worthy the rcost orthodox office-holder in the country--they rob all and singular that Ml in their way; have no more respect for the pittance of the poor dressmaker they have for the honest earnings of government official, and will in a very ibort time, if ieft to the cultivation of their peculiar talent.be willing to swallow teai oath without flinching.

These precocious youngsters promise to be such lights in the professional and political world to which they belong, it would be a pity to reconstruct them by of the ordinances in tuck eases taide and provided. two persons see the same thing under the same circumstances, or relate what they' did see in the same way. Reporters often have the misfortune to fall into hands of parties who know everything that lias occurred or likely to occur, and as these sort of people usually speak for a small clique if personal or partisan friends, to discredit any part ol their statement or alter any portion of the information furnished, is to mortal orfjnse to the whole coterie to which Sir Oracle" belongs. We append one of the experiences of a reporter for the New Yoik World The difficulty of obtaining correct in- rmition concerning any accident or other svent from bystanders who have witnessed is very remarkable. A few days ago the writer passed tbrough.Washington Place at Jthe moment when a man was fatally injured by the wheels of a Green street car, as he wag attempting to get on the front platform.

Several persons were on the spot at the moment, and some of them gave different accounts of the accident. One of thim assured the writer that he was close by the car when the man was run over, and that he recognized him as one of the velocipedists who were running on the street at the time. Another stated that he distinctly saw the man off the car. A third said that the man, when crossing the track, was knocked down by the horses, and the wheels had not touched him at all. Various other statements, all of them wrong, were made by persons who professed to have been eye-witnesses of the accident.

REMARKABLE IDENTITY OF liave been written iu explanation of the diversity of ideas and opinions which prevail amongst literary men: and writers for newspapeis are particularly conspicuous for giving tlie very best illustration of the old adage that two of trade never agree." We uro led to these remarks by the very extraordinary identity of ideas, and modes of expression which characterize the lucubrations of two of our cotemporuries of late. We often find them treating the subjects at the same the same way, and what is more remarkable in identically the same language even the minutia of punctuation is strictly adhered to.

In the morning edition ol the one and the evening issue of the other yesterday, we find no less than nine articles, some of them of considerable length, which are identical in every ticular. As these phenomena have been more noticeable since tho inspirational" lectures a week or two since, we can account for it in no other hypothesis than spiritualistic infl uences." As the writers for these journals are remarkable for brilliancy of conception and falicity of expression, we can only regret that our stupidity should be so great as to prevent, by any possibility, the adoption of the same ideas--it would bs such a great of time and money, and so very re freshing to our readers. The San Antonio Express says Mr. Breckenridge reports the Chattanooga Company composed of solid and heavy capitalists, -who are amply able to build the railroad to San Antonio, bnt they believe that the charter extension, granted, granted by the late Reconstruction Convention, is of no validity, arid they propose to wait for legislative action. They require from San Antonio and tbe counties ea route, a bonus of $750,000 and 200,000 acres of land.

In the Indianola road, Morgan promises to take $250,000 of stock, and to take the bonds of the city of San Antonio for $200,000 more. But the charter extension is subject to the same inyalidism. The Austin Republican, we are glad to see, makes a most earnest call a regiment of the cavalry that hag been operating against the Indians in tbe territories to be sent to reinforce the troops operating on the frontier. A SINGULAR MILITARY PROCEEDING. Messrs.

Allen Poole, shippers of beeves Indianola, came in possession the other day of about 100 nnbranded calves. These calyea they bought of a responsible stockraiser in Texas. There being.no competent or proper authority at Indianola, they went to the post commander for permision to ship the said unbranded calves. Tbe commander gave his'consent, upon the condition that Messrs. Allen Poole should go to the trouble of branding them.

This, at no little trouble, was accordingly done by Messrs. Allen Poole; but, strange to say, the permission to ship was withdrawn by the commander, unless the shippers would give a bond and security in double the amount of the calves. There being only an agent of this bouse at Indianola, be did not feel authorized to do any such thing, and, as a consequence the calves went to the prairies, still herded in the vicinity of Indianola. Mr. Allen, enjoys the reputation of being one of the most honorable men of Western Texas.

Certainly, this was a most singular military proceeding to to say the least of it. Christ! Advertiser, 39th, Nrwu omcm, GAI.VIBTOS, J.ine t. 18K. Kccelpts from the Interior.
