The actor's shooting schedule for NBC's "The West Wing" kept him from attending Antioch College's commencement Saturday Antioch president Robert Devine had to tell the 92 graduates the man who plays President Josiah Bartlet on the popular television show wasn't showing up. "I think he missed out, personally" said Sara Walton, 22, a graduate from Louisville, Ky "We don't need the celebrity to celebrate such a unique place. We draw our own attention." Sheen, a native of nearby Dayton, sent a letter saying he was honored to be associated with the college, which works for peace and human rights. He said attending a Shakespeare play at Antioch in 1954 when he was 14 had played a role in his pursuit of an acting career. Williams stuck on third awhile BOSTON — Baseball great Ted Williams could be released from a hospital in a couple of weeks despite a malfunctioning kidney and a tracheotomy tube that keeps him from talking most of the time, his doctor said. The 82-year-old Boston Red Sox Hall of Famer requires dialysis and he's been on and off a respirator. His New York cardiologist. Dr. Jeffrey Borer, said those prob- lAMC lems wouldn't prevent Williams WILLIAMS from returning home to Florida from Sharp Hospital in San Diego, where he is , undergoing rehabilitation. "I wouldn't say he's fine, but he's progressing," Bor^p told the Boston Sunday Globe. Borer performed hear^ surgery on Williams in January Williams' son, John Henry has been with his father every day since the surgery "I think he's going to make it," Henry said. "I'm here for the duration. I'm not leaving until he leaves — one Way or the other." The truth of paternity is out there BOZEMAN, Mont. — "X-Files" creator and executive producer Chris Carter believes in government conspiracies, but not in aliens. "But I want to believe," he told .ah audience at Montana State University. Carter was invited to speak at the college by his cousin, Shari (Mulder) McCoy the administrative assistant to MSU President Geoff Gamble. Carter borrowed his mother's family name for FBI CARTER agent Fox Mulder, played by David Duchovny One of the big questions during this season: Who is the father of agent Dana Scully's baby? "Watch the next four episodes," Carter replied. T ADVICE 'Coach Jimmies' of the world need referees Dear Ann Landers: I was terribly upset by your response to the letter from "Watching in Florida," whose young son was befriended by "Coach Jim- ^ my" While it may be unfair to assume that "Coach Jimmy" is a pedophile, I hope you win teU that mother to pay attention to her instincts. My brother is in a state prison for child molestation. He matches the description of Coach Jimmy perfectly He was kind and nice, took young boys to the movies and the video stores, helped them with their homework, bought ^ them gifts and impressed their parents with his dedication and generosity Meanwhile, he traumatized and molested more than a dozen boys that we know of ANN LANDERS Creators Syndicate Inc. Any grown man who spends aU his free time with young children has a problem. My brother was attractive and personable, but he didn't date and claimed to be deeply religious. He had no adult friends. He spent every moment trying to be a "father figure" to boys, especially those who came from broken homes. He made them believe he was showing them "love." He fooled everyone, including his family Those parents who entrusted their children to his care will never stop blaming themselves for being so naive. Please tell "Watching" and other parents who have the same concerns to trust their gut feelings. It may not be fair, as you said, to label such people, but I say better safe than sorry — One Who Knows Better in Michigan Dear One in Michigan: Again, you have proven that "everybody knows better than anybody" — including me. I received a ton of mail from readers complaining that I had given Coach Jimmy a pass he might not have deserved. All who wrote pointed out that there is something wrong with an adult male who doesn't date women and spends all his spare time "befriending" young boys. While Coach Jimmy may be perfectly safe, parents should trust their instincts. Dear Ann Landers: My 11-year-old daughter refuses to go to school. This started a few years ago, and it is getting worse. Every morning, "Tina" says she has a stomachache and doesn't feel weU. I know it's because she doesn't like school and needs an excuse to stay home. She usually starts this nonsense in December, and by June, I can hardly stand it. On those days when I think she may be genuinely sick, I will take her to the doctor, but usually I make her go to school anyway Then, in the middle of the day the school nurse will phone me and say "Tina isn't feeling well. Please come and pick her up." Ann, I can see that the child is faking it. Why can't the school nurse? When Itry to get Tina out of bed in the morning, she ignores me. If I leave the house to go to work, she will sleep until noon. I have tried everything, but nothing seems to work. Please help me out. — Perfectly Healthy in Maryland Dear Maryland Mother: The child may be "perfectly healthy" but there is some reason she does not want to go to school. You must find out what it is, in a nonac- cusatory manner. Something about school makes her not wish to be there. It could be a learning problem that is preventing her from succeeding in class, or it could be a distressing social situation. A candid mother-daughter talk is overdue, and professional help might be useful. Gem of the Day: The most comfortable sleeping position is the one you find after just turning off the alarm.
