THE SALINA JOURNAL NEWS MONDAY, OCTOBER 21, 1996 AB BRIEFLY LaGuardia reopens, but runway still closed NEW YORK — Busy LaGuardia Airpo rt reopened Sunday, a day after a jetliner smacked approach lights with its landing gear and slid down the runway on its belly. The Delta Airlines plane, a McDonnell Douglas MD-80, was hauled off the end of the runway Sunday afternoon, though the runway remained closed. The airport's other runway reopened about noon. Delta's Flight 554 arrived from Atlanta on Saturday as a severe storm was knocking power to thousands of customers in the region, flooding highways and homes and postponing the first game of the World Series. Of the 63 people aboard the flight, one was slightly injured while being evacuated, Port Authority officials said. "The jet hit some approach lights in Flushing Bay," said Port Authority spokesman Alan Morrison. "After that, the nose gear collapsed and the plane started to skid (and) came to a stop at the east end of the airport." Teen-ager accused of ride-by sexual assault WARWICK, R.I. — A pimply faced, bespectacled 15-year-old boy is accused of ride-by sexual assault, grabbing four women as he pedaled past them on his bicycle. The women told police the boy sped by as they were walking or jogging and grabbed their breasts, buttocks or groin, police Capt. Joseph Tavares said. In each case, police said the women described their assailant as white, with acne, wearing wire-rimmed glasses, a baseball cap and a backpack. Police said they received four complaints between Aug. 26 and Oct. 10. The boy has been charged with four counts of second-degree sexual assault. He was released to the custody of his parents. Gunman wounds two, then leaps to his death BUTTE LA ROSE, La. — A passenger fired several shots on a Greyhound bus Sunday, wounding two people, then jumped off the bus and was killed when he hit a guard rail. The wounded passengers were not seriously hurt, said St. Martin Parish Sheriffs Capt. Audrey Thibodeaux. "He wasn't shooting at anyone in particular, just shooting," she said. Other passengers told investigators the man had been drinking alcohol on the bus from Houston to New Orleans, said Thibodeaux. "He said someone was going through his bags and wanted the driver to stop," said Jay Gladden, 30, of Columbus, Ga. "He reached in his pants, pulls out a .357 and starts brandishing his gun." The gunman's identity was not released. 6 wounded by party crashers at baptism WHITTIER, Calif. — Six guests at a baptism party were stabbed Sunday in a confrontation with party crashers, some of whom later returned and shot two of the people who already were wounded. The victims were in stable condition. Thirteen party crashers were being sought, Los Angeles County sheriffs officials said. Arguments and a fistfight broke out among party guests and a group of nine men and four women who turned up uninvited at the gathering outside Whittier, said Lt. Terry McCarty. One of the party crashers pulled out a folding knife and six people were stabbed. .The party crashers then drove off in three cars in three directions, but one car returned to the scene and at least one occupant opened fire with a handgun, The attack did not appear to be gang- related, the sheriffs office said. Cathedral damaged in bombing begins anew OKLAHOMA CITY — A single trumpet and hundreds of singing voices rose above the bass rumble of a crane Sunday as it lifted a new limestone cross to the steeple of a cathedral damaged by the Oklahoma City bombing. "It looks like home again," said Edie Langley, 83, who was christened in St. Paul's Episcopal Cathedral in 1913. The deadly April 1995 bombing of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building two blocks away tore away a third of the cross that had gf aced St. Paul's since its construction in 1903. The force of the blast — which killed 168 people and injured more than 500 — also blew out stained glass windows and pushed the brick walls a few inches out, said the Rev. George Back, dean of the cathedral. "We're going to start with the cross and work our way down," B]ack said of the $4 million renovation project. From Wire Service Reports JAPAN Hashimoto big winner in Japanese election Prime minister's position seems secure after his party wins majority in Parliament By The Associated Press TOKYO — Prime Minister Ryutaro Hashimoto's conservative party completed a historic comeback Sunday, capturing almost half the seats in Japan's lower house of Parliament to secure a dominant place in government.! The results of Sunday's election mean all but certain re-election for Hashimoto as prime minister and a return to glory for the Liberal Democratic Party, which governed Japan alone from 1955 to 1993 before falling amid a series of corruption scandals. Attention now turns to whether Hashimoto will keep his campaign promise to overhaul the bureaucracy — which dominates Japanese policymaking — by cutting the number of ministries in half. Even as the results came in, Hashimoto HASHIMOTO appeared to be backing off from quick action, refusing to name the top priority of his new government. "I don't think it's a good idea to pluck out one and make that into the star product," the prime minister said. The Liberal Democrats won 239 of the 500 seats in Parliament's lower house, which chooses the prime minister, the Japan Broadcasting Corp. reported. ' That's far better than their previous strength of 206 seats. But the party still lacks a majority in the upper house, which was not being chosen Sunday, so Hashimoto said his party plans once again to govern in a coalition. He said the Liberal Democrats will seek support from their current coalition partner, the Social Democratic Party, which holds a substantial bloc in the upper house but won only 15 lower-house seats. The new parliament is expected to convene at the end of this month or in early November to select the prime minister. In foreign policy, the Liberal Democrats' dominance means continued support for the Japan-U.S. security alliance. Hashimoto also has been hawkish as a negotiator in trade disputes with the United States. "X. o Come Help us Celebrate the Grand Opening of Our New Super Store fn Amarlllo!
