At the University of Illinois, Lou Tepper tackles prejudice A N 11-BY.14.INCH sign hangs in the University of Illinois football coaches' locker room, taped above the orange, mesh-metal lockers, visible from all corners. The only thing coach Lou Tepper allows on the wood-paneled walls, it states: "Prejudice is a great time saver. It allows one to form an opinion without bothering to gather the facts." It's Topper's battle cry. Since 1992, he has led a one-of-a-kind racial integration program on his team that tackles prejudice. "When a young man comes into our program, he must pledge to work with, live with and love all races," Tepper says. That means sitting next to players of another race at meetings and rooming with them on the road. Tepper also expects all players to maintain a standard of behavior that includes good grades, no swearing and no criminal conduct. 14 USA WEEKEND • Oct. 18-20, IW6 'pledge to work with, live with and love all races/ says Lou Tepper "Football is a tool of education," explains Topper, 51. But football is also a business, and Tepper's approach is drawing criticism around Champaign, a college town 135 miles southeast of Chicago. Some Fighting Illini fans think Tepper's priorities are out of whack. "I really respect him, but the focus is too much on it [racial harmony]," says Simeon Rice, a former Illinois star and current rookie with the National Football League's Phoenix Cardinals. "More focus should be on winning games." The Fighting Illini are off to a poor start this season (1-3 at press time), after so-so seasons in 1994 (7-5) and 1995 (5-5-1) that failed to live up to predictions tabbing them among the top 25 teams.
