New Cancer Therapy May Be at Hand (C) 1971 WASHINGTON STAR PADUA, Italy - Two scien lists — one Israeli, the other American — have been able to make leukemia cells behave like normal cells by treating them with chemicals. Although die experiments have been performed only in the test tube, the word is considered to be evidence that a new kind of cancer therapy may be at hand. Both reporta were given here yesterday at the Fifth Intema ttonal Symposium on Compara tive Leukemia Research. Leukemia, or cancer of the blood, is actually several different diseases, each of which gets its name from the particular kind of blood cell which becomes subject to abnormal growth What both scientists told the meeting is that this abnormal growth is due to the fact that these cells continue to divide because of their failure to mature and that the chemicals they are using cause this maturation to take place. To put it another way, the drugs turn Infant cells into adults. Once they are adults, they cease growing and become subject to normal body controls just like healthy cells. Dr. Leo Sachs of the Weissman Institute in Rehovoth, Israel, has been working .with granulocytes and macrophages — white blood cells that are scavengers. By studying cells from patients with acute leukemia of these types, he has discovered that a chemical he calls differentiating factor is missing when either kind of cell fails to mature. Further study, he said, at the meeting, has revealed that the missing chemical is made by other cells in the body and is a protein. He and his colleagues have isolated it and are working to decipher its exact chemical structure and to extract it from tissues in large amounts so that it can he tried in animals before tested in human patients. Should it prove effective, said Sachs, it probably would have to be taken indefinitely, much as insulin is used for the treatment of diabetes. He warned, however, that only cells from patients with acute leukemia respond to the chemical, and that a different strategy would be necessary to help people who have the chronic form of the disease. In another report, Dr. Charlotte Friend of Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York told of her findings with another form of leukemia which, unlike those Sachs works with, affects the red blood cells, but otherwise behaves in much the same way. Using red blood cells from leukemia mice, isolated in test tubes, the scientist has been able to make them stop dividing — in other words, mature — by adding a common commercial solvent to the mice blood cells. The solvent, dimethylsuflox- ide, or-DMSO, not only makes mature cells out of primitive ones, she reported, but enables them to make hemoglobin which they otherwise cannot do. Hemoglobin is what gives red blood cells their color and makes it possible for them to carry oxygen.
