NEWS & VIEWS To neuter or not Columnist Elizabeth Marshall Thomas recommends against neutering male dogs because it changes their personality ("Pets," Sept. 13-15). She fails to mention the health reasons for neutering a dog. Doing so before puberty can nearly eliminate his chance of developing prostate problems, including infection, cysts and cancer. Female dogs altered before puberty have a greatly reduced chance of mammary cancer. KRIS CIANCI Red Bank, N.Y. Any humane society or shelter will tell you that intact males constitute the biggest category of "dumped" dogs. DEBRA M. ELDREDGE Vemon, N.Y. You decry neutering, which alters only a dog's sexual behavior, but extol the spaying of female dogs. You show a common sexist prejudice: Pet owners are much less likely to neuter male pets than to spay females. I speak from 25 years as a practicing veterinarian. FRED S. JACOBS MUits, Calif. Not always for suicide Responding to an article about suicide, a letter writer accused the Hemlock Society of glorifying suicide (Aug. 23-25). As executive director, I take issue with this characterization. We strongly support suicide prevention programs and believe suicide never should be considered an answer to emotional problems. But we believe people who are near death because of a disease should be allowed to get help from doctors so they may die a gentle death, if that is their choice. FAYE G1RSH Denver Corrections • The location of an incident cited in the Sept. 27-29 story about gangs was incorrect. The incident, in which an innocent teen was beaten into a coma, allegedly by gang members, occurred in Windsor, Calif., not in Kentfield. • A photo caption in "The Week" (Sept. 20-22) misidentified Fargo co-star William H. Macy. Wrimo USA WEEKEND, 1000 Wilson Blvd., Arlington, Va. 222294012 (foe 703-276-5518; e-mail: (etteft@iKawwkend.cofn). E3 «| ONLINE: Bring your thought* to our America Online message boards.
