Employees of Six Rags theme parks in eight cities will devote next Saturday to kids' causes DETROIT Empowering the community: High school student Shertta Parker will help police Lt. John Autrey register voters. Continued from previous page Putting handcuffs on doesn't." On Oct. 26, Autrey and his fellow volunteers hope to empower residents another way by holding a voter registration drive. They've targeted neighborhoods in southwest Detroit that have seen low voter turnout in past elections. Their goal: to sign up 1,000 voters. "We're trying to combine the power of reading with the importance of voting," Autrey explains. "If you can't read, you may not understand the issues." The coalition's daunting mission is to bring reading to a city where an estimated 200,000 adults — about 20 percent of the population — are functionally illiterate. So far, everybody from college students to a Chrysler executive have cut that number by the 1,000-plus people they have taught to read. Reading won't keep everyone out of jail, notes Autrey, "but it may give you hope for a better life."
