With three drivers , locked in a tense struggle for the prestigious stodk car title with three races remaining, what happens in the 400-mile race today at North Carolina Motor Speedway will likely be pivotal. Ironically, none of the lead trio has had a lot of success at the 1.017-mile oval. Jeff Gordon, who leads teammate Terry Labonte by one point and Dale Jarrett by 92, won the race here in the spring of 1995. But that is his only top-10 finish in seven ca- : » reer starts at NCMS. In fact, his average finish here is 25.285 — including four races he has failed to finish. Labonte, who has been around the sport , considerably longer than his 25-year-old team- • mate, has two wins, 12 top-fives and 19 top-lOs in 28 starts here. But his average finish is only ; i 13.171, and he has failed to finish seven times. Pole-winner Jarrett has no wins, three top-lOs and has failed to finish five times at Rockingham in 18 starts, but he did finish second to Dale Earnhardt in February. ROCKINGHAM, N.C. — Terry Labonte's crew, headed by crew chief Gary DeHart, won the 30th,,,,, annual Unocal Pit Crew Championship on Satur-..,, day at North Carolina Motor Speedway. The winners changed four tires and poured in two cans of n gasoline in 22.056 seconds, beating the winning time from the previous year by 1.6 seconds. TeanY ;r mate Jeff Gordon's crew, led by Ray Evernham, _^ wound up second Saturday with a time of 23.502, ^ followed by Rick Mast's crew, with crew chief ,'"Kevin Hamlin, at 23.854. The only other crew un-',h, der 24 seconds was Ernie Irvan's, led by Larry _,,•,. McReynolds, at 23.984. It is the fourth time a Hen-', dick Motorsports crew has won the contest, but • the first time for DeHart. Gordon and Evernham :• won two years ago. v ' r; . ' .'V 1 Baseball 2 NEW YORK — While rain washed out the World' Series opener Saturday, negotiators for players •••- 1 and owners met for a second straight day. The "^ talks, the first since the sides agreed on most of __ the major points during three hectic days in early^ August, were expected to go on through the week-,,t end. It was unclear if acting commissioner Bud,', "?i Selig would join them when he arrived for the World Series, now scheduled to start Sunday -.-.-: night. Management negotiator Randy Levine and'"' union head Donald Fehr met several times during'^ the day and talks went on into the evening. Both'"' Levine and Fehr think Selig is the key to" a deal. ,„. Approval from 21 of the 28 teams is needed to ratfo, fy an agreement, and both negotiators have said 0>i they think Selig can get the 21 votes if he wants to.r Basketball EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — Xavier McDanieC a former NBA All-Star who played in Greece last season, signed with the New Jersey Nets on Saturn day. While terms of the deal were not disclosed, .»* McDaniel is expected to receive the NBA mini- ;-' mum salary of $247,500. McDaniel, 33, who last "*'• ' played in the NBA in 1994-95 for Boston, is expected see considerable time at small forward with starter David Benoit out for the season because of an Achilles' tendon injury. Golf VIRGINIA WATER, England — While Ernie Els got most of the afternoon off, Fiji's Vijay Singh worked overtime to join the South African star in the final of the World Match Play Championship. Els, undefeated in three appearances in the tour- T nament, routed PGA champion Mark Brooks 10 and 8 Saturday. Two hours later, Singh finished off British Open winner Tom Lehman on the 37th hole. "I have another 36 holes to play tomorrow, and I know I've got to play really well," said Els, who rallied from 6-down Friday to beat Steve Strieker. "But I'm happy I can C| c take the rest of this afternoon tL& off." Els, who closed out Brooks with a 25-foot birdie putt on the 28th hole, took the lead on No. 4 and steadily built his edge as the American landed in bunkers at five of the first nine holes and twice drove right into the trees on Wentworth's West ' Course. 'LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. - Jay Haas is more than willing to give Tiger Woods his due. He's just not ready to give him another victory. "He deserves all the attention he's getting. He's been the best player on our tour for the last months," said Haas, who shot a 4-under-par 68 pn Saturday for a share of the third-round lead in the Disney Classic. Rick Fehr, Lennie Clements and Taylor Smith joined Haas at 16-under-par 200, while Woods, the three-time U.S. Amateur champion who won the-** Las Vegas Invitational two weeks ago for his first.* pro title, was a stroke back along with Payne Stewart, Ronnie Black, Mike Sullivan and Joel Edwards. Woods shot a 69, missing a 2-foot par putt v-. on No. 18. x - t SEOUL, South Korea — Sweden's Annika Soren- stam shot a 3-under-par 69 to take a one-stroke " lead Saturday over South Korea's Park Se-ri after 1 " the third round of the World Championship of "^ Women's Golf.
