The spectrum runs from an increase of nearly 1,000 at Kansas State University, to a slight one for the University of Missouri's Rolla campus. This, school officials say, is in keeping with a downward enrollment trend at most engineering schools across the country. Most educators agree that veterans returning to college should create a gradual enrollment increase until the mld-70s, and the post-Korean baby boom should hit the colleges aboout 1978. They then expect enrollments to begin leveling off about 1980. While enrollments at the major universities have risen from 20 to 35 per cent in the past five years, new students at junior colleges in the six states have skyrocketed from 200 to 300 per cent. Major school officials see the advent of the junior college as a blessing, and do not look upon them as competitors. * "The University of Missouri looks very favorably on junior colleges and the functions they are performing," Tom Richter, the university's public relations director says. "Our desire is to do everything we can to cooperate with them because of the mutual benefits. There is rip evidence that the junior college enrollments have had any material effect on enrollments at the Columbia campus." i Richter added the university would be "hard put to handle all the demands on public higher education" without the help of the junior colleges. Junior college officials echo this opinion. Dr. William Baley, associate superintendent of Iowa's junior college program, says "We are extremely enthusiastic about, area schools and their potential for the future. Through this program, we can serve between 60 and 80 per cent of the people in our state who have never had an opportunity to receive higher education previously." r • • • KANSAS CITY (AP) - Enrollment in Big Eight schools five years ago, and estimates of this fall's enrollment: 1966 1971 University of Missouri (4 campuses) 37,210 48,000 University of Kansas (2 campuses) 14,603 18,373 Kansas State University 11,285 14.900 Oklahoma State University t 16,003 19,000 University of Oklahoma 15,471 18,300 University of Nebraska (campuses) (x) 17,051 34,900 Iowa State University 15,183 19,500 University of Colorado 15,691 21,000 TOTALS 142,499 193,073 (x) 1971 figures include Omaha campus, which did not join University system until 1968.
