Coloradoan Prep Sports The Friday Report -T s. B'- rL o. Rocky Mountain zips past loveland, 40-12 63-CV 73' a-a- D9 i The first time Rocky Mountain had the ball the Lobos marched 57 yards In seven plays to get on the scoreboard. Starting from the Loveland 27, quarterback Allen Wlnslow threw a play action pass to Joe Stoll. He was wide open In the rlghthand corner of the endzone for the touchdown and Wlnslow's extra point made the score 7-0.

Following a Loveland punt, Rocky Mountain started from near midfleld again and took only six plays to score Wlnslow kept around right end for 21 yards and then Spitz picked up the final 28 yards on three carries. Spitz' five-yard scoring run over left tackle came with 2:02 left In the first quarter and Wlnslow's wide PAT attempt left the score 13-0. Rocky Mountain had two opportunities pass by the board when Wlnslow had a 51-yard field goal attempt blocked and then a 56-yard Interception return for a touchdown by Mark Schmidt was nullified when the Lobos were called for roughing the passer. Another Interception came on the next play, however, as Mike Mangum picked off a pass that went through the hands of Indian receiver Tom Flock and returned It from the RM 25 to the Loveland 40. The demoralized Indians were not up for the following play as Spitz ripped through the Indian line and outran the secondary for a 40-yard scoring jaunt.

Wlnslow's kick left the halftime score 20-6. By TOM BRUNY For the Coloradoan LOVELAND Winning builds pride and losing Is habit forming and Friday night's Rocky Mountaln-Loveland football game proved both statements as the Lobos rode their winning momentum to a 40-12 trouncing of an Indian team that appeared to be Just going through the motions. The win came In the final regular season contest for both schools and left Rocky Mountain with a 4-1 Northern Conference Division II record and a 7-1-1 overall record. Loveland Is now 2 21 In league play and 2-5-2 on the year. This Friday Loveland will meet Longmont as the two third place finishers battle and Rocky Mountain will likely play the loser of Tuesday's playoff game between Cen-taurus and Sterling.

Tom Spitz was the big show for Rocky Mountain once again as he rushed for 13S yards on 13 carries. The over 10-yard average was boosted by touchdown runs of 40 and 33 yards, respectively. "Tom Just keeps Improving every game," praised Lobo coach Pat O'Donnell following the game. "I think he's even faster now and getting off the ball better than he was In the middle of the year." Jack Scarborough intercepted a Wlnslow pass at the beginning of the third quarter and returned it to the Lobo 25 to set up Loveland's first score. The touchdown came on an 11-yard pass from Mike Gebhardt to Joseph Matese with 9:52 left in the quarter.

Spitz came back a few minutes later with his 33-yard touchdown-run. On third down and one, Spitz swept left end, turned the corner, and outran safety Larry Roorda into the endzone. Jay Yeager recovered a Gebhardt fumble a few seconds later, setting up a four-yard touchdown keeper by Win-slow. That made the score 33-6. Rocky Mountain recovered a Loveland fumble on a punt return to set up its final score.

That came on a 29-yard strike from Curt Strobel to Mike Noonan. Most of the fourth quarter was consumed by a 17-play, 87-yard Loveland drive that stalled on the RM one-yard line. Rocky Mountain turned around and fumbled on the one on the next play and the Indians got the touchdown back on a two-yard keeper by Gebhardt. "Our seniors did a great Job and we're really putting things together now," said O'Donnell. "Our goal was to win the last four and finish 8-1-1 and we have one more game to do that." mi mii ir- w--T--f 'itrm ni-ir irBMSiTiifaiai i nt VaamwaJ Coloradoan photos by Joe Novotny TOM SPITZ 10-yard avg.

RM ii By NICK LARSON Of the Cbloradoan Poudre High's football team finally enjoyed a breather Friday night. "It was one of those fun games for the kids that will get them enthusiastic about next week's final game," said PHS Coach Ron Mc-Clary Friday night after the Impalas coasted to a 38-0 shutout over Thompson Valley at French Field.

The Impalas came into the game with two losses and a tie in their last three outings. Therefore, the chance to play against a team with only one win for the season came at an opportune time for Poudre, which now stands 2-2-1 in Division I play of the Northern Conference and 5-2-2 in all games. The Impalas close out their 1976 schedule next Friday at French Field against Greeley West. The two clubs finished in fourth place in their respective divisions. Poudre racked up 372 yards total offense against the Eagles on the leadership of senior quarterback John Whitman.

The 190-pounder, who wasn't expected to start, ran 11 times for 113 yards and completed 5 of 17 passes for 69 yards. He also scored three touchdowns by rushing. Junior Greg Pettine had been expected to get the starting nod at quarterback. But he and seniors Kevin Christensen and John Turner were all forced to sit out the game due to a violation of training rules. McClary indicated the trio may not play in the season finale, either.

The Eagles got a standout performance from ace tailback Ivan Vasquez, who rushed for 132 yards on 23 carries. Tailback John Stouffer, the season-long leading rusher for Poudre, injured a knee early in the game and finished with 40 yards on four carries. His replacement, Glen Scott, turned in an admirable performance with 67 yards on nine attempts. And Steve Devlin, a junior starting in place of Christensen at fullback, may have won a starting berth on next year's team Whitman leads Poudre Impalas fo easy win Senior quarterback John Whitman was indeed a big reason why Poudre blanked Thompson Valley 38-0 Friday night at French Field. Whitman picked up 69 yards through the air with tosses like this (top) in completing 5 of 17 passes.

And he ran for 113 yards on 1 1 carries, evading Thompson Valley tacklers like this (bottom) throughout the night.
