C8 SUNDAY, APRIL 29. 2001 SPORTS THE SALINA JOURNAL OSBORNE BULLDOGS Photos by JUSTIN HAYWORTH / The Salina Journal (Above) Osborne runners Brittany Dfetz (left), Krisa Ubelaker (middle) and Jolene Micic (riglit) cheer on teammate Ashley Noel during the Beloit Relays, (inset) The team prays prior to the start of one of its races. Just Call Osborne: By CHRISTIAN D ORR The Salina Journal Coaches preach to athletes from the very first time they pick up a little league bat or take their first jump shot that it is important to be humble in victory and gracious in defeat. But lately, Osborne's girls have only had to worry about half that lesson. "We are not very good losers," said Ashley Noel, one part of a loaded group of Osborne female athletes that has been dominating the state in all sorts of different ways. It isn't that the Osborne girls are poor sports and pout when the lose — that is definitely not the case. They just very rarely lose. "We take it graciously, but none of us like to lose," Noel said. In almost everything they do, the present girls' programs in Osborne have found success, whether it be the 51-game winning streak in basketball, the back-to-back state titles in track or the numerous individual titles won in tennis, cross country and track. "We just have a bunch of competitive girls right now that hate to lose," said Os borne track coach Wayne Wahrman, who has been reaping some of the rewards that have gone along with the present group of athletes. "1 have had competitive people before that didn't have the talent and talented people that didn't have the competitiveness. These girls, they have it all and it isn't just one or two of them, it is all of them." But it isn't just the competitive nature that the athletes point to when they talk Town about the reasons for the success. Instead it is the camraderie that they aU share in making Osborne the next Title Town. "We do everything together," said Brittany Dietz, who has brought individual state tennis titles to Osborne as well being a 3-point specialist for the basketball team and member of the track squad. "Before basketball games we all get together for dinner. We have sleepovers all the time. We all just get along." "Even when we aren't in the same sport, we support each other," said Brooke Ube laker, a member of the voUeybaU, basketball and track teams. "All of the volleyball players go to the cross country meets, the cross country girls come to the volleyball games and we all went to Brittany's tennis matches to support her." The girls know they walk aroimd in any competition with giant targets on their backs. And for now anyway, they wouldn't have it any other way "You are the enemy," said Jolene Mick, a state medalist in cross country and track, "But it is fun to be the enemy You enjoy being on top and we are just working hard to make sure that we are not passed anytime soon."
