THE SALINA JOURNAL SPORTS SUNDAY, APRIL 29, 2001 W • ON THE OUTSIDE Water temperature has effect on fishing RECREATION CALENDAR TOMMIE BERGER fisheries biologist, Kansas Department ofWildlife and Parks When one talks about fish, most people realize we are talking about that finny critter that puts a bend in our fishing rod and bites on a worm. That's true. However, fish are really a little more sophisticated in that their characteristics include having fins for locomotion and gills for breathing. Some have scales for external protection and all are cold-blooded. These characteristics make a fish a fish. ^ By being cold-blooded, a fish is at the mercy of his watery surroundings. Cold blooded critters do not have the ability to generate high body temperatures and must rely on their surrounding environment to provide them with temperatures necessary to survive. Usually, a fish's body temperature is the same temperature as the water he's in and his mobility and appetite are governed by that water temperature.' When the water is cold, a fish's metabolism is slowed considerably, he moves slower, needs less to eat and when he does eat, his digestive system works slowly, too. What this means to a fisherman is that when temperatures are cold, one must fish slower, use smaller baits, and will find that fish feed less often. That's why fishing is tougher when the water is cold. As the water warms, metabolic rates increase, more food is needed to provide increased energy, and food is digested more rapidly Therefore, fish become more aggressive, feed more often and eat larger portions. As water temperatures rise, fishing gets better, to a point. If water temperatures get too warm, then fish get uncomfortable, seek cooler areas and feed less often. So, water temperatures are pretty important to the successful angler. Still, many fishermen ignore water temperatures. Some ask how to check water temperatures. The quickest way is to purchase a small, portable, pencil-sized thermometer that can be carried in a shirt pocket, tackle- box or boat storage compartment. A simple swirl in the water for 30 seconds gives a quick, easy water temperature reading. A string tied on and measured in foot increments will allow taking temperatures at varied depths, but usually a surface temperature is enough to give you an idea what the fish might be doing. A Kansas angler can determine water temperature by the season of the year with a little practice. Farm ponds are one of the quickest bodies of water to warm up in the spring because they are smaller. Once the ice melts off a pond, it will quickly warm to 40 degrees or more, even in February, if there are a few bright sunny days. Bass generally become active as soon as the temperature approaches 50 degrees, usually around mid-March. Large reservoirs warm much slower — it is usually early April before a big lake reaches 50 degrees. April is the prime fishing month in all Kansas waters. The water warms to 60 degrees or above, bass bite well and crappie do too if they are present. Catfish start to become active and bluegill are the last to get going. By May, the water temperature is usually 70 degrees and all species are quite active. Bluegill can be found spawning around the shoreline and catfishing peaks. Bass sometimes go to an early morning, late evening schedule. Summer brings higher water temperatures and often slower action. The surface temperatures may be 80 degrees or more, but the deep areas of the lake or pond are cool and that's the place to fish, right? Not really. Some water bodies lose oxygen in deep water during the summer. Fish may seek cool places but shade, areas with vegetation and brush- piles in shallower water will be most attractive. Fish may simply change to a night feeding schedule and bite best in late evenings and early mornings. Then in September, water temperatures start to fall and fish get more active again, filling up for winter. As the temperature drops to 70 degrees, then 60 degrees, then 50 degrees, fishing sometimes is excellent. Unfortunately, most anglers put their rods.away, pick up theirhunting equipment and miss out on some of the best action of the year Again, when water temperature hits 50 degrees and lower, those cold-blooded fish slow down, eat less and are harder to catch. Right now, we have some of the best fishing of the year and it will continue through the month of May April, May, and June are the months when most of the fish are caught each year. Don't worry too much about water temperature right now — just get that pole out and head to your favorite fishing hole. Safety tips to follow regarding lightning By Scripps Howard News Service SALT LAKE CITY — Count the seconds from the time you see lightning flash until you hear thunder, then divide by . five. This is the distance in miles from the lightning to you. If you can hear thunder, you are close enough to be hit. On that cheery note: On the ground Go to a low lying open place away from trees, poles and metal objects. Make yourself as small as possible squatting low to the ground, but do not lie flat. Separating from other people decreases risk. Stuck in the woods Avoid tall lone trees, hunker under shorter trees that are not standing alone. In the house Nothing is perfectly safe, and people have been struck in their home. In rare instances, it will travel through wires and plumbing. Avoid anything the lightning can use to travel — plumbing, electrical or telephone connections. On the water Get off the water, long before the storm hits. Many strikes happen at the beginning and end of storms. Struck? If someone is struck by lightning, perform CPR."
